Mulligan is a strategy!

edited February 2019 in Just for Fun Contests
The rule is simple! Make a card with the word "mulligan" in its rules text!

Examples:
imageimageimage
The last example(made by me) is the reason this contest is "just for fun" category. It has memory issues because players might forget how many times they took mulligan at the beginning of the game. But in this contest, I don't care about that memory issue.

    I commented on that card!

Here's one created on Mtg.design . I thought I would try to do something with conspiracies and I like the conspiracy border on that website.

Interesting.. but I need more information about Conspiracy Sorcery. The text says you include that card in your deck. Then why it has to be a Conspiracy?
  • @Tomigon Oof, I originally was going to make it go in the command zone and than forgot that it needed to to be a conspiracy.

Well, here's my entry. Not sure how well balanced it is. I'd love to hear your thoughts!
  • Make it draw three, and that would equal out the mulligan
  • @Bowler218
That makes the card better than Concentrate though..
  • True, but balances out the 4 card draw. It really could go either way
  • Great challenge, I'll think on smth once I get home.

BTW, a mulligan is the most important, free card selection aspect you'll have in a game of Magic. It decides how your early turns, and thus most of the game (except in Sealed and Multiplayer), will play out.

Ik it feels bad starting with 6-5 cards, but it's the way the rules don't allow a card game of mostly random draws become a choose-your-own-hand. Variability is an aspect that should exist, or else matches'll be scripted.

So having every card designed to equal out the mulligan might not be as accurate.

References to the Vancouver Mulligan, scrying a card you already left on top (double-checking), Zendikar, the destroyed Bala-Ged continent, and Jori En, a Merfolk from there.

Who else has heard of this secret recipe?

    @Servillius here's the template code: <a href="image src" target="_blank"><img src="image" width="35%" /></a>

@Servillus The picture URL still says "Picture URL". Is that meant to happen?
I can't find any card mentioning "Mulligan" in your cards. Did you forget to publish it? That happened to me once.

It's time to announce the winners!

    -3rd Place!
    "Ascertain" by @Lowlander

    image
"Reveal before mulligan -> effect during first upkeep" is interesting! Even if you don't mulligan, 1 mana instant scry 2 is not that bad.

    -2nd Place!!
"Danava of Miserable Fates" by @TenebrisNemo

    image
Nice to see a common card entry! I really like the balance of this!

    -1st Place!!!
    "Optimism" by @Lastjustice

    image
"Cantrip if you mulliganed" is such a simple yet nice touch!

There are many other good entries. But some entries are a little weak if you don't take a mulligan, and some entries are little too good if you take a mulligan. I prefer "It's ok to take one or two mulligans because you have this card in your deck" over "You should to take a mulligan no matter what if you have this card in your deck". So if your card didn't win, that may be the reason. Still I enjoyed all amazing ideas you posted! Thanks for participating!

well first place, Sweet @tomigon. Thank you, I was trying aim from the thought process of, Mulliganing sucks, but if you have to do ...can it suck less. I didn't want to make a card that count the number of times it happened, or was so awesome if you mulligan you were sure to throw away your hand atleast once to take advantage of it.

    image

I thought hey if you have mulligan down, you keep a land, it's just not a very good land to play in the first place is the counter balance. It doesn't make any color and comes into play tapped, but you atleast have something to help you get to whatever you need to and you are down one less card.

    image

I wanted make a card that helped get you back to seven for your next hand, but you lose life for each card. Which doesn't automatically mean your next hand won't suck that you paid life for, but better odds though you might get a decent hand. I had make sure it was a higher casting cost as if was a cheap and easy to cast creature people throw them in every deck. It's color intensive and a 5/5 for 6 mana otherwise making is a alright creature to play. Could be a finisher for a control deck.

    image

I wanted a simple card that drew a card, so went with the theme of optimism, that you will look up no matter what hand you take. If you have a positive outlook you can still find what you need. Hopefully....... heh.

Oh crap! Sorry guys! I thought the deadline was today, but it was tomorrow! And i also forgot the time difference again lol. So sorry @ElMagici and everyone who was planing to make a card for this contest. If you have already made cards, you can post them here until tomorrow at this time. I'll comment and/or favorite them.

    @ElMagici
All of your cards should say "Any time you could mulligan and CARD NAME is in your hand, you may exile CARD NAME from your hand.", like Serum Powder.

    "Mineral Landscape"
You need to exile it face up so that opponents can know you are not lying.
Interesting ability, but the mana acceleration feels a bit too fast.
And if you don't mulligan, the land is very weak.
But I like the idea of the last ability for the mulligan matter cards!

    "Toughtscar Leviathan"
It looks good, but there are a few mistakes; I think you wanted it to be exiled instead of putting it to the battlefield(check out the reminder text of suspend!), and it uses time counters, not suspend counters.
  • @Tomigon fixed them and made some tweaks on Mineral Landscape
  • edited February 2019
    @ElMagici
You don't need to say "face up". When the card says "exile ____", _____ is always exiled face up.
And your cards still don't say "from your hand", but if you disagree with the wording by WotC, that's fine.

New version of Mineral Landscape is too good. No lands in mtg can produce a mana of any color by only {t} without drawbacks. And your land can add additional mana. I recommend you to look up Gatherer for lands that can produce a mana of any color, and lands that can produce two or more mana in a turn, and see what kind of drawbacks they have.

This is the simplest idea of a mulligan matter land I just came up with
    -----------
This land enters the battlefield tapped unless you took one or more mulligans this game.

{t}: Add one mana of any color.
    -----------

Other two cards look good! Btw, can you leave links to card pages instead of just images, so that I can comment on your cards?
    Or <a href="Page URL"><img src="Picture URL" width="35%"></a>
^This is what everyone is doing.
