Fairy Tale World Contest
Hello everyone =D
This is my first contest ever, so don't worry it won't be anything complicated. Most of you have already heard of the mighty "Short List" of Mark Rosewater, but I'm going to explain for those who don't. It's a list of the block themes that have been the most frequently asked by players. For instance, after the Theros block - which was based on Greek and Roman mythology - there was a lot of requests for something similar with Egyptian mythology. You can find an old version of the shortlist here: http://markrosewater.tumblr.com/faq
This challenge is exploratory design for one of the theme in the short list: Fairy Tale World \o/ This include fairies of course, but also giants, princesses, witches, dreams, castles, forests infested with bad wolves, etc... You may design any card that will show the potential behind this theme. It can depict how you see the Fairy Tale set as a whole by proposing keywords, or tribes, etc... Or it can be your version of some very well-known tale, in a more card-by-card approach.
Here are the specific rules:
- Cards must fit flavourfully into a Fairy Tale set
- Cards must be realistic in black border, have proper templating and be balanced
- Cards that depict an existing tale must not directly reference the tale, do the Magic version of this tale instead (for instance, you must not make a card called "Cinderella" but you can make "Midnight Princess", just like "Heliod" was Magic's take on Zeus in Theros)
- Cards created for other challenges are accepted
- No more than 5 entries per smiths (that allows you to make a full horizontal cycle if you wish)
- Deadline in 3 weeks : 23th April
I will judge how exciting, original, and elegant the idea behind each card can be ^^
The prizes are:
- First place : 5 favourites on whatever cards you want me to favourite
- Second place : 3 favourites on whatever cards you want me to favourite
- Third place : 1 favourite on whatever card you want me to favourite
- [EDIT 16/04] Also, every card in the top 10 will get a favourite on this card
Good luck ! (I hope I didn't forget anything important, if I did tell me in the comments XD)

It is a cycle of lords that work with either their type (all but Witch of the Woods) or their color (Witch of the Woods)
Search for Her Highness
The Changeling Process
Walk the Full Moon
Palace of the Changeling
This is about a princess who is stolen and replaced with a changeling, who then kills the king and queen. I invented a mechanic called dreamtake for this. Please don't tell me stealer isn't a word.
@saveria201: Yours cards are very different so it's difficult to give a general opinion. My main advice would be to reconsider The Lost Princess - even if it has 3 favourites already - as it would definitely not be printed with this mechanic in black border, but still has great potential.
@Lujikul : Beware with Exiled Prince, you don't want to prevent any kind of response from your opponent. The game is still about interactions.
@falloutimperial : I think you have a tendency to undercost the effects, I'm going to be flexible when I'll judge, but there's still a range where some effects are possible or not (typically searching your library for any black creature cannot cost only 2 mana with the upside of being a land as well).
@worldslayer15 : While extremely flavourful, your mechanic "Happily ever After" suffers from a big issue. It's neither a keyword ability (like Investigate or Madness, that can have a cost, use reminder text italicized, and will always do the same thing) nor an ability word (like Delirium, they can't have a cost, they have actual rule text not italicized, and they just are here to tie cards that work kind of the same way but still do different things). Which means you cannot say "Happily Ever After [Cost]" if it doesn't always do the same thing (basically, with a keyword ability, you should be able to remove the reminder text and players should still be able to play it correctly without additional information). While this is easy to fix, it also means you cannot reference an ability word in the rules (basically you cannot say "When a Happily Ever After cost is paid"). That will recquire to rethink completely part of your mechanic and/or card if you want them to work in black border.
@Simicguy : Wizards of the Coast avoid doing lords that just give +1/+1 since quite some time now. You can look at the cycle of uncommons lords in Shadows Over Innistrad for humans/spirits/zombies/vampires/werewolves. You should try to make each tribe feel more unique, have its own mechanical personality. While giving +1/+1 seems fine for humans for instance which tend to be a Go Wide army tribe, it doesn't make as much sense with the little magic faeries for instance. Same thing with the stats : a 2/3 human seems ok, a 2/3 giant is much less plausible.
@Creeper333_ : A lot of your costs seems out of the reasonable range for what they actually do. But the most important thing is that making the opponent discard two cards repeatedly is really too strong to not have an activation cost attached to it.

Blue Creature: Faetouched Dragon
Black Enchantment: Corrupted Wilds
W/G/R Split Sorceries: Harmony // Discord
(By the way, do the split sorceries count as one or two? It's fine either way, but I don't want to overstep myself.)
W/R Equipment: All the King's Horses
Colorless Instant: Rewrite the Script
Time for last entries
Also, since there are currently more than 60 entries from 20 different people, I'm gonna do a top 10, each card of the top 10 will get a favourite, and the top 3 will get their additional favourites as planned =D
Far Darrig {2}{G}
Creature - Faerie
Whenever Far Darrig deals combat damage to a player, you may gain control of one creature that player controls with converted mana cost 1 or less. If you do, put a 1/1 Shapeshifter creature token with changeling onto the battlefield under the defending players control.
"Rat-face, red-coated, and only three feet tall, Fir Darrigs have a five-foot vertical leap and a quick hand with the shillelagh; their single-digit IQs couple with that to make them think they are eight feet tall and four times as fearsome." - Kevin Hearn
