  • Results are in and we have our "Circuit Challenge Winners"
What this means is that if @EnvyReaper chooses to come behind me and Judge this differently, it won't affect the Circuit Challenge, as this was judged by me solely to resolve the Circuit Challenge past it's resolution date.

First off.... This was totally subjective! There were so many great cards that were entered, but some were not quite "Hero" material. Cards that didn't fit into the top eight might still be better "overall" cards, but for this I was looking for... Heroes!

How this was judged... I tried to remain somewhat true to the original criteria, so I went with the rules and eliminated a couple of cards that broke the rules. Then I went with the most flavorful "Hero" from each Cardsmith, leaving each participant with one entry. After that, Cardsmiths were paired up randomly and judged for "Interesting-ness" versus each other until we achieved the Top Eight

    8. Yevu Hi, Unholy Savior by @Fantastickill7
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/yevu-hi-unholy-savior
One of my favorites, but lost points for small things, such as lack of artist credit and card draw with positive lifegain in mono-black, which traditionally black does card draw primarily with life loss.

    7. Ennara, Solemn Warrior by @SpellPiper2213
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/ennara-solemn-warrior
Whimsical, in a dark and dreary way. Fun, but not as balanced and heroic as some of the ones above it.

    6. Knight of Roses by @Level20GnollBard
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/knight-of-roses-3
Artwork is spot on and really good flavor, but I felt this one could get out of hand rather quickly, especially in black!

    5. General of Angelic Rebels by @CassZero
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/general-of-angelic-rebels
I thought this was one of the more creative of the top cards, but it ended up in the number five spot for little things, such as Artist Credit and the "General" mechanic feels more than common.

    4. Avacyn Abolished by @FangQuil
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/avacyn-abolished
This was an obvious one, but a little too obvious for me. I had to deduct flavor points based on the fact that, while it has all this flavor, the other contestants brought their flavor with original characters, and Avacyn comes with some preconceived notions.

    TOP THREE!!!

    3. Slaine, Inspiriting Tactician by @DomriKade
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/slaine-inspiriting-tactician
Strong card. I feel the name has a typo (Inspiring) but aside from that, this card has all the makings of a "Hero with a Dash of Black"

    2. Warden of the Afterworld by @TheCenterOfTheUniverse
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/warden-of-the-afterworld
A Hero with a Dash of Black is what this guy is! Early game he's a wisp, late game a nightmare, but he protects his family from the horrors of the dead and undead, by keeping them where they belong. He is both black, and anti-black simultaneously!

    1. Thintha, Outcasted Rebel by @KrakenSalad
    https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/thintha-outcasted-rebel
As the battles raged on, this one kept standing out to me. As her brethren fall beside her, Thintha "returns" them to keep fighting, bolstering the lines and keeping morale at a high until such time as they can band together to bring back a fallen warrior. What more could you ask for in a Hero?

I had a lot of fun with this one. Thanks to everyone for your entries. I know I didn't do as in depth a job as @EnvyReaper was planning to do but I think everyone did a great job bringing their cards to life based on @East2West 's Article!

  • Congrats to all the winners! This was a very fun challenge!

@Corwinnn Is there any chance I could get some feedback on my entries?

Congratulations to all participants. This challenge has a very cool concept. I'm glad to be remembering in the top8.

@Corwinnn Thank you for the warning. I am doing a review on the artists for the old cards. I'll put them in their comments whenever I find them. In the beginning I didn't have this notion of importance.

  • Congrats to everyone on their entries! This was a fun and difficult challenge.

@Corwinnn I'm curious to know which of my 3 entries you thought was most flavorful.
  • I'm honored! Congrats to all the winners and entrants!

For the curious, inspiriting is just a ten-dollar word for "encouraging or enlivening." Learning every day! I know this because I used to read the dictionary for fun :)
  • I was not aware of that! Thank you for the knowledge, I'm going to use that at work tomorrow!
  • Top Three, don't forget to post your cards for favorites!
  • I am sorry for this everyone, especially you @Corwinnn, I tried to finish this but with everything going on I kept drifting far away from the project whenever I tried to get any judging in.
  • @EnvyReaper... no worries! It was fun. I hope you like the picks I made!
