🎯 What Is a Tutorial Discussion?

A Tutorial is a step-by-step guide teaching others how to do something.
On MTG Cardsmith, tutorials often cover things like:

Anyone can make a tutorial, no matter your skill level—just share what you know!

🛠️ Step 1: Choose Your Topic Carefully

A great tutorial should:

Cover a real need or question people might have

Be specific (e.g., “How to Balance a Planeswalker,” not just “Card Design Tips”)

Fit your own experience (teach what you know well!)

What’s something you wish you had learned earlier?

What questions do you see often in forum discussions?

What do you enjoy doing that others might want to learn?

✍️ Step 2: Plan Your Tutorial Before You Post

Good tutorials are organized! Before creating your thread, sketch out:

Introduction: Brief overview of what you’ll teach

Step-by-Step Instructions: Clearly numbered or separated

Examples: Show examples wherever possible

Tips/Warnings: Share things to watch out for

Conclusion/Encouragement: End on a friendly note!

🧵 Step 3: Create the Forum Thread

🏷️ Suggested Title Formats:

[Tutorial] How to Balance a Custom Planeswalker

[Guide] Writing Great Flavor Text

[Step-by-Step] Running Your First Contest

Make the title clear and helpful! Tutorials often live or die based on first impressions.

🔥 Step 4: Make It Engaging and Interactive

A great tutorial isn’t a lecture—it’s a conversation!

Encourage:

Questions

Sharing

Discussion

Feedback

This keeps your thread alive long after you post it.

📌 Step 5: Update or Expand as Needed

Sometimes your readers will ask for more!

You can:

Add Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) at the bottom

Create a Part 2 tutorial if interest is high

Edit typos, clarify steps, or update examples over time

If your tutorial becomes popular, it might even get stickied by mods!

💡 Tips for a Great Tutorial Discussion

✅ Use formatting: headers, bold text, bullet points
✅ Keep language simple and friendly
✅ Break big ideas into smaller steps
✅ Use examples generously
✅ Encourage participation and follow-up questions
✅ Be open to feedback—you’re helping, not preaching!

These are places to show off card designs, ask for feedback, brainstorm new ideas, or just talk about Magic design in general.

This guide will show you how to start and maintain a vibrant, welcoming Custom Card Discussion thread!

💭 What Is a Custom Card Discussion?

A Custom Card Discussion is not a contest or a challenge—it's a conversation.

You might create a discussion to:

Share a single card and ask for feedback

Discuss a group of cards (e.g., a custom set)

Workshop mechanics, flavor, or worldbuilding

Talk about card design theory ("What makes a good planeswalker?")

Inspire others with design ideas or themes

It’s open-ended and typically ongoing—perfect for evolving conversations!

🛠️ Step 1: Pick a Clear Focus

The best discussions have a clear “center.”
Before posting, decide:

🎯 What is this discussion about?

A specific card or design?

A mechanic or concept?

A custom set or world?

A design philosophy ("How important is flavor text?")?

If you’re just sharing random designs, that’s fine too—but still give it a theme, like “Weird and Wacky Cards” or “Cards That Tell a Story.”

🧵 Step 2: Create the Forum Thread

Click on New Discussion.

🏷️ Suggested Title Formats:

[Discussion] Help Me Workshop My Mechanic: Overwhelm!

[Discussion] Share Your Favorite Card Designs!

[Custom Set Discussion] Tales of Veloria – Feedback Needed

[Design Talk] How Much Text is Too Much Text?

Make the title inviting and clear!

📝 Suggested First Post Template:

# 🃏 [Discussion] Help Me Workshop My Mechanic: Overwhelm!

Hey everyone!

I’m designing a mechanic called **Overwhelm**, and I’d love your feedback and ideas. Here's the mechanic:

> **Overwhelm** — If this creature would deal excess damage to a blocking creature, it deals that much damage to the defending player as well.

---

## 📜 Example Cards:

**Raging Herdbeast**
2RG
Creature — Beast
Overwhelm (If this creature would deal excess damage to a blocking creature, it deals that much damage to the defending player as well.)
Trample
4/3

---

## 🔥 Discussion Questions:

- Is this mechanic too close to Trample?
- How could it be made more distinct?
- Would it be fun to play with?

---

Feel free to share your thoughts, design suggestions, or even your own cards using **Overwhelm**!
Thanks! 🎨

🎯 Step 3: Foster a Friendly and Active Discussion

You set the tone!
To keep your discussion lively:

Reply to every comment you get

Ask follow-up questions (“What if the mechanic triggered differently?”)

Like and react to posts

Thank people for ideas, even if you disagree

Post updates as you tweak your designs

If your thread gets quiet, post a new card or idea to keep the conversation going!

📌 Step 4: Keep Things Organized (Optional)

For big projects (like custom sets or long series), consider:

Indexing your designs in the first post

Adding edit updates (e.g., “Update 4/24: Changed mechanic wording”)

Linking to cards via MTG Cardsmith

Numbering your custom cards for easy reference

Helps readers follow along easily!

🎨 Step 5: Invite Others to Participate

People love when they're included!

Encourage participants to:

Share their own designs related to your topic

Suggest changes or variants

Build on your ideas (“What if Overwhelm worked with Instants too?”)

Offer alternate versions

Collaboration makes discussions thrive!

🏆 MTG Cardsmith Community Forums Tutorial

The Contests & Challenges category is one of the most creative and engaging parts of the MTG Cardsmith forums. It’s where cardsmiths go head-to-head, build new skills, show off wild designs, and earn glory (or sometimes prizes!).

Whether you're aiming to host something casual or competitive, this guide will help you launch and manage a successful thread from start to finish.

💡 What’s the Difference Between a Contest and a Challenge?

Both involve card design around a theme or goal, but they differ in tone and intensity:

Contests

Challenges

Competitive

Often more collaborative or creative

Winners selected

May have no winner

Prizes or faves sometimes offered

Often no prizes

Defined rules and deadlines

May be ongoing or open-ended

🧠 Step 1: Decide Your Format

Ask yourself:

🎯 What’s the goal?

To test design skill?

To spotlight a theme or mechanic?

To have fun?

📜 Will there be rules or restrictions?

Color identity limits?

Design a card type (e.g., sorcery only)?

Use a specific mechanic?

🗓️ Will it have a deadline?

One-off contest (ends in 1–2 weeks)?

Ongoing challenge (no deadline)?

A series (e.g., weekly design battles)?

🥇 Will you give prizes?

Faves? Badges? Bragging rights?

Optional, but a nice touch!

🧵 Step 2: Create the Forum Thread

Post in the Contests and Challenges section and click “New Discussion.”

🏷️ Suggested Title Format:

[Contest] Create a Mythic Goblin!

[Challenge] Mechanic Match-Up!

[Design Series] Commander Cycle Project

Make it clear, punchy, and enticing.

Thank you for all the amazing entries! Y’all really brought your A-game.

🥇 **1st Place** – @CardSmithKing – “Goblin Prophet of the End”
Tragic, powerful, and still hilarious. Incredible work!

“Just for Fun” contests are the heart and soul of the MTG Cardsmith forums. These informal design challenges invite cardsmiths of all skill levels to jump in, create, and enjoy without the pressure of big prizes or strict judging.

This guide will show you how to craft and run a successful “Just for Fun” contest that brings joy and engagement to the community.

🧁 What Is a "Just for Fun" Contest?

A Just for Fun Contest is a low-stakes, creative Magic: the Gathering card design challenge that:

Has simple, open-ended or quirky prompts

Encourages creativity, humor, or casual experimentation

May include light feedback or silly prizes (like internet glory or a “cookie”)

Focuses on participation over competition

Perfect for first-time hosts or anyone looking to stir up some casual creativity!

🛠️ Step 1: Plan Your Contest

Keep it light, simple, and fun. Here’s what to decide:

🎨 Choose a Fun Theme

“Design a card that would scare Nicol Bolas”

“Create a legendary creature with a food in its name”

“Design a planeswalker that’s terrible at their job”

“A card that rhymes!”

Keep the prompt open enough to allow multiple creative takes.

🧃 Decide Entry Limits

1–3 entries per person is standard

Cards can be new, old, or both

Allow text-based cards or image-based cards (or both)

🏅 Prize or No Prize?

Most JFF contests skip real prizes

You can offer:

A “virtual cookie” 🍪

A spotlight post in your next thread

A card fave

A badge made in MS Paint (yes, really!)

🧵 Step 2: Create the Forum Thread

Head to the Contests and Challenges section of the forums and click “New Discussion.”

Suggested Title Format:

Just for Fun Contest – [Your Prompt Here]
Example: Just for Fun Contest – “Make a Card With a Cat Riding Something”

Thank everyone for joining

Forum-based RPGs are some of the most fun and collaborative experiences on MTG Cardsmith. They blend roleplaying, card design, worldbuilding, and storytelling into an ongoing interactive adventure. This guide will walk you through everything you need to launch and maintain a thriving RPG discussion thread on the forums.

🎭 What Is an RPG Discussion?

A Roleplaying Game (RPG) Discussion is a collaborative storytelling thread where players:

Create characters (often using cards)

Roleplay their actions through posts

Interact with a game master (you!) and each other

Influence a shared narrative world

Often include challenges, missions, or events

It’s like Dungeons & Dragons meets Magic: the Gathering card design.

🧱 Step 1: Plan Your RPG

Before launching, consider these essential elements:

🔮 RPG Type:

Freeform Narrative: Story-driven, more collaborative, loose structure

Structured Campaign: You act as a game master with rules, turns, and events

Hybrid: Some structure, but allows player freedom

✏️ Prepare:

A setting and premise (plane, world, or dimension)

How characters will be created (usually via custom MTG cards)

Your rules for participation (how turns work, power levels, etc.)

The first scenario or event to kick things off

🧵 Step 2: Create the Forum Thread

Go to the MTG Cardsmith Forums and:

Visit the “Saga” category

Click “New Discussion”

Title it something fun, specific, and RPG-relevant
Example: [RPG] Rise of the Etherborn – A Custom Card Roleplay Adventure

Suggested First Post Layout:

# 🌌 Rise of the Etherborn – A Magic RPG Adventure

Welcome to the Plane of Virelia, where the mysterious Etherborn have returned from extinction—and they're not alone. A cosmic storm approaches, and factions old and new rise to seize power.

---

## 🎮 How to Join

1. **Create a character card**. Your character is a legendary creature!
2. Post the card image and a short backstory.
3. Include your character's goal or motivation.

---

## 📜 Rules of the Game

- Keep posts **in character**.
- Limit card power levels to **uncommon or rare strength**.
- You may design **spells, items, or allies** later on.
- I’ll act as the **Game Master (GM)** to guide events and world developments.

---

## 🌍 Setting

Virelia is a plane caught between dimensions. Magic is unstable, and reality fractures at the edges...

---

## 🔥 First Prompt:
*A strange aurora fills the sky as whispers echo through the forest of glass. Your character is drawn to the center of the disturbance...*

---

## 💬 Let the Roleplay Begin!

Post your character below, and write your introduction post reacting to the first event!

🛠️ Step 3: Act as Game Master (GM)

As GM, you're both narrator and referee. You should:

Set scene descriptions to move the story forward

Introduce plot twists, villains, or magical anomalies

Respond to player actions (e.g., “As you step into the cave, a rift opens…”)

Keep the pacing going (2–3 updates per week is a good baseline)

Sample GM Update:

## 🌩️ GM Update: Stormfront

As the adventurers gather at the temple ruins, the storm darkens. From the shattered portal, a beast of light and shadow emerges!

---

🧝 @Elven_Smith: Your character’s warning spell fizzles—magic is unstable near the portal!
🗡️ @KnightCrafter: Your sword hums as you approach—what do you do?

👥 Step 4: Encourage Participation

Welcome new players warmly

Highlight great character moments

Allow players to design new cards for spells, items, or events

Invite them to co-author events or side quests

Make polls or mini-votes for story direction

Tip:

If players go inactive, you can:

Gently nudge them via DM

Continue the story with their character fading out or being sidelined

Reopen the game to new players

🗺️ Step 5: Track Progress

If your RPG grows, consider:

Editing your first post with a player roster

Adding a world map or faction guide

Creating a “recap post” every few pages

Posting card galleries for player characters and major NPCs

Optional Thread Add-ons:

Companion thread for character submissions

Google Doc or Notion page for lore archive

RPG wiki (if the world is expansive)

🏆 Tips for Success

✅ Be consistent – Regular updates keep it alive
✅ Don’t over-control – Let players shape the story
✅ Be flexible – Improvise based on character actions
✅ Reward creativity – Call out cool plays or clever writing
✅ Use your strengths – Combine story, card design, and flavor text!

🎉 You’re Ready to Launch!

A well-run RPG discussion is one of the most magical experiences on the MTG Cardsmith Forums. You’re not just telling a story—you’re helping others become a part of it. Be patient, be consistent, and have fun exploring your world together!

Custom Set discussions are a fantastic way to engage the community in storytelling, worldbuilding, and card design. Whether your idea is a set, a custom plane, or a serialized lore project, this tutorial will guide you through launching and maintaining a thriving custom set thread on the MTG Cardsmith forums.

✨ What Is a Custom Set Discussion?

A Custom Set on MTG Cardsmith refers to a recurring or ongoing narrative project that often includes:

A custom MTG set or block

A worldbuilding thread tied to mechanics, characters, and flavor

Serialized chapters or releases of lore

Community participation in designing cards, characters, or plotlines

Custom Set discussions are more than just a set – they tell a story.

🧱 Step 1: Planning Your Discussion

Before posting, consider the following:

What is your central theme? (e.g., Cyberpunk Revolution, Mythic Atlantis, Post-Apocalyptic Eldraine)

Will you post episodic updates or one big dump?

Will you allow community interaction? (Collaborative sets? Design challenges?)

Prepare:

A basic lore introduction

A few example cards (include images or direct card links)

Mechanics (describe them clearly)

Any worldbuilding resources (map, pantheon, key characters)

🧵 Step 2: Creating the Forum Thread

Navigate to the Cardsmith Forums and:

Go to the “Custom Sets & Cards” category

Click “New Discussion”

Title it something catchy but informative.
Example: The Shattered Realms – A Dimensional War Custom Set

👥 Step 4: Engage the Community

Ask questions: “Which of these mechanics feels most fun?”

Run polls

Start mini-challenges within your thread (e.g., “Design a creature for the Flame Sea”)

Invite collaboration (“Looking for co-creators!”)

Pro Tips:

Tag active users or invite them via PM

React to comments with likes or emotes

Occasionally summarize what’s been contributed so far

🧹 Step 5: Organize and Archive

If your discussion becomes long-running, consider:

Creating a table of contents post at the top (edit your first post to add this)

Linking to important lore posts or user submissions

Starting a spin-off thread for contests or card design games

🏆 Bonus Tips for Success

✅ Use visuals – Card images, art, and formatting make posts engaging
✅ Be consistent – Weekly or bi-weekly updates are ideal
✅ Stay open – Be welcoming to all skill levels
✅ Celebrate contributions – Shout-out fans and featured cards
✅ Adapt – Let the discussion evolve with community ideas

Welcome to the "Selecting Artwork" Tutorial.

So you have the idea of what you want to make, but you don't quite know where to find the right artwork. Or maybe you don't really know what card you want to make, but you'll know when you have the right inspiration. Whatever your method of making a card is, you're going to want some art for it, and here we will teach you what and where to look for that art.

Basic rules and guidelines to art selection.
1. Use your best judgment. Nudity, vulgarity and offensive images are not tolerated on MTG Cardsmith, so avoid that kind of art. Sometimes art will walk a thin line, but it's always a good idea to imagine that your mother is going to look at all your cards, and select your art with that thought in mind.
2. Do your best to include the artist's name on your card. We borrow images from artists all the time, it's good to give credit where that credit is due. Without them making their art available on the sites we use, we would see a lot of stick figure dragons on our cards.
3. Be polite. Very few of us are making our own art to put on the cards, so if someone else is using art that you didn't personally create, don't get mad at them for using it too. Part of the fun on MTG Cardsmith is seeing how different people interpret the same artwork.

Search Engines vs. Art Sources
The two basic methods of finding art is either through Search Engines like Yahoo, or through Art Sources like Deviant Art. Some people might prefer one over the other, but I have found that they each have their merits.

Search Engines
Search Engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, are great for finding something specific. The difficulty in using these is that you can get wildly varying results. Finding the right search parameters is beneficial, and some keywords are better than others. Here are things I use and have found useful.
1. Artists Names - Always a good choice if you know who the artist is. Just one more reason to have the artist name on your cards. If someone likes an artist, they can use this information to find more art, and so can you.
2. Alternate names for things - Looking for a fox? Try looking up Kitsune. Looking for Angels? Try Seraph. Alternate names will give you additional results because artists like to be creative with the names of their art.
3. Focus Words - Things like "sci-fi artwork" or "fantasy artwork" will turn up more results geared toward what it is you might be looking for... such as "angel fantasy artwork" or "cyborg sci-fi artwork". Words that help focus your search will reward you with better returns

Art Sources
Art sources, like Deviant Art, Computer Graphics Society and Reddit give you a ton of art to look through. Sometimes it's easy to find what you're looking for, and other times it's a Herculean task! Here are some useful tips.
1. Artist Galleries - If you like an artist, be sure to go through their gallery and see more of their art. More often than not, you'll find something else you like in addition to the one thing you started off looking for.
2. Favorites - Deviant Art, specifically, has a section on the artists page devoted to their favorites. I have found many gems waiting here to be discovered.
3. Flexibility and Patience - Be flexible in what you're looking for and be patient in your search. Sometimes you'll find something you love, but don't know what to do with, and other times you just can't seem to find that one thing you're desperately searching for. Don't be afraid to search a little longer, but also don't be afraid to look somewhere else when the source just isn't producing what you want.

Hello aspiring cardsmiths and vets alike! I'm TheKeefMan, or Keef for short, I'm a newer cardsmith but I have been accredited multiple times for my cards for their formatting. People have asked me how I put so much detail and professionalism into my cards, and here is how I'll teach you, step-by-step, so follow along!

Part 1: The Concept, Art And Layout

The first part to making a card is to well, have a card to make. Now when coming up with a card, dont try too hard, or you'll end up with a card that's too complex, or tries too hard to be unique. Not every card has to be a mind-blowing revelation, gracing the community with its outstanding beauty and creativity. If you shoot too high, you'll almost always miss, not to say you can't try new things. Even I experiment with complex cards from time to time.

Now, you have a card in mind, an idea you are satisfied with and you're ready to make your card. You go to MTGCardsmith.com, press "Create New Card", press M15 Card, and then, you see this:

Uh-oh, you need art! Now where do you find you right artwork for your card? Theres a few sights to look: Artstation, DeviantArt, Pixiv, Imgur and maybe Gelbooru. (Word of caution: Gelbooru has great art, but there is a LOT of nsfw, tread carefully, unless of course, you're into that . )

Ok, now you're on your website of choice, how do I find the art I want? Try using keywords that relate to your card. Making a land? Look up keywords like "Landscape" "Majestic" "Forest" "Mountainview". Or, making a creature? Look up "Wizard" "Goblin" "Mermaid", or just flat out "Fantasy". Looking up just "Fantasy" and looking around, is a way too find a lot of good art, and it's what I do a lot!

Now, you've got your art, and you select it and you press "Next", you'll see this screen:

Now, this is a lot, so lets look at what we got here. From top to bottom we have the following: Card name, Frame color, Card watermark, (optional) Card type, Card subtype, Card rarity, and Card's set icon. These are the easy ones to fill out, and are basically self-explanatory. Now look below, you have the meat of the card, what the actual card is gonna do and be! Now hold your horses, what are all these buttons for?! Let's walk through this together.

The top box is full of silly symbols, if you've ever played magic before (Which you most definitely have) you'll recognize most, if not all these symbols. When you press one of these silly symbols, it'll insert that symbol into the Card Ability textbox. But wait, if you look, that's not the symbol, that's just some weird gibberish! Yes, it gets inserted as some weird sting of text, usually a letter inside of indented brackets "{ }". Think of these as commands the website reads to know what symbol to insert. When the website sees a "{T}", it knows to insert a "Tap" symbol in the card. Cardsmith has about every ruling symbol you'll ever need, and they are as follows:

{t} Tap symbol {X}, {1-12} universal cost symbols, (Note, only {1-10} are actual buttons on the website, but you can manually put in {11} and {12} and it'll register, but not {13} and higher. This is the same for the actual card cost too.) {w}, {u}, {b}, {r}, {g} and {c}, white, blue, black, red, green and colorless mana symbols, {e}, energy symbol, {ut}, untap symbol, {w,u,b,r,g/w,u,b,r,g}, dual mana cost symbols and {p/w,u,b,r,g}, life/mana cost symbols.

Now, that was a lot on paper, but in practice, its pretty simple. Now with that, lets get to these bigger buttons. All these buttons are the same as the others, except one, and we'll get to that last. You have three buttons that are just the same as the last:

{Bull}, insert a bullet point.

{Dash}, insert a dash.

{Line}, Add a long dash.

Now, we have the last button, "Italics", If you just press the button, you'll think its broken, but what you have to do is, select all the text you want italicized, and THEN press "Italics". You'll probably see these two symbols at the beginning and the end of your selected text. "<i> ... </i>" These are what tells the website to make the text between these symbols to be italicized.

And finally, these last two buttons on the side, "Small text" and "Large text". MTGCardsmith only have two font sizes, small and large. Which you will have to use for your card will usually require you to preview your card first before knowing which one you need. Unlike all the other buttons, these don't insert a keyword into the text box and is just an external toggle.

Part 2: Making The Damn Card!

Now, we've gone through all that, lets make the freakin' card!

Putting together your concept and the tools you've learned you can make a great card! But, how do I do that? One thing, wording, wording wording! This is probably the hardest part of your card, even I struggle with it, yeah I know, crazy. Now to get your best wording, cross reference cards with similar abilities or the same abilities to see how to word it in your card.

Now before we finish our card and press that coveted "Preview card" button, you might see this little checkbox: "Include power/toughness?". If you have a creature card, select it, and you'll see this prompt popup:

And below this you'll see two more prompts, "Artwork Artist" Let's you credit the artist of the artwork used, (Always do this!) and "Card Category", not very important when all is said and done but it's useful enough ig, and it doesnt impact the card at all.

Pretty self-explanatory. Now that we have all that done, lets finally do it, press that glorious "Preview card" button!

"What?" you might ask, "Why does my card look like crap?"

This is where step 3 comes into play.

Hi. I'm creating this post to help everyone properly word their cards or to make the text look good, because I see a lot of mistakes repeated over and over. This is not meant to offend anyone or brag, I'm rather trying to help. It's impossible to write everything out under every individual card, so from now on you can just send a link to this thread in case anyone needs to see it.

Using numbers in the textbox
There are several instances, where you use a number in the textbox of a card:
- Amount of damage (e.g. "Shock deals 2 damage to any target.")
- Amount of life (e.g. "You gain 3 life."/"Each opponent loses 1 life.")
- Converted mana cost (e.g. "Destroy target creature with converted mana cost 3 or less.")
- Values of abilities (e.g. "Scry 2."/"Crew 4")
- Creatures' power and toughness and their modifiers (e.g "...unless you control a 1/1 creature."/"target creature gets +2/+0 until end of turn."/"Each creature gets -X/-X until end of turn.")

And then there are moments where you don't write it with a number, instead you use a numeral word:
- Any amount of cards
Wrong: "Draw 2 cards." / Right: "Draw two cards."
Wrong: "Look at the top 5 cards of your library." / Right: "Look at the top five cards of your library."
Wrong: "Discard 3 cards." / Right: "Discard three cards."
Wrong: "Search your library for 2 land cards..." / Right: "Search your library for two land cards..."

Get x Gain x Have
Creatures "get" a modifier for their power/toughness and they "gain" a keyword ability for a limited duration. "Have" is used for keywords but on a static effect. E.g. "Target creature gets +3/+3 and gains trample until end of turn." ; "Creatures you control get +1/+0 and have haste." (on a permanent card)

Keyword abilities
Some creatures have one or more keyword abilities at the front. There is not a period after them. The only ability that will begin with a capital letter is the first one of the list.

When using keyword abilities somewhere else in the textbox (e.g. "Target creature gains lifelink until end of turn."), those words also don't begin with a capital letter (wrong: "Target creature gains Lifelink until end of turn.").

The reminder text for a keyword ability is in brackets and must be in italics. To get a text into italics, simply select it and then click on the "italics" button above.

Ability words
Ability words are written in italics, after them is a long dash, and then normal text. Ability words can't be referred to by other cards and can't be granted. Example of an ability word:

Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield...

An ability word is unified only by the condition under which it triggers or is active. You can't for example give a creature landfall.

Dealing damage and gaining life
This is an issue, that I see all the time and please remember this - you as a player don't deal damage. Damage always has to have a source, let it be a spell or a permanent. Whenever you are talking about dealing damage in the textbox, you need to state the source - and it is pretty much always the card that talks about dealing the damage.

Wrong: "Deal 2 damage to any target." / Right: "Shock deals 2 damage to any target."

The other similar issue is with gaining life. You always need to state who gains the life.

Wrong: "Gain 4 life." / Right: "You gain 4 life."

Subtypes in the text box
Whenever you refer to a creature type or another subtype in the textbox, the first letter should be capitalized. E.g. "Put a +1/+1 counter on each Vampire you control." / "Search your library for a Gate card..."

Activated abilities and mana costs
Whenever you begin another sentence in an activated ability, the first letter should be capitalized, like this:

"{1}, {t}, Tap an untapped creature you control: Add two mana of any one color."

The part after the mana cost is an additional cost to activate the ability and the colon comes only after it. The "tap" symbol is also separated from the mana cost by a comma.

In any mana cost, the generic mana symbol always comes first, then come the colored mana symbols. If you are unsure on the order of the colored mana symbols, search up a real modern card of that color combination.

Card frames
A card with only one color in its mana cost is simple, you use a simple mono-colored frame of the chosen color.

A card that has exactly two colors of mana in its mana cost has two options:
1) the mana cost utilizes hybrid mana symbols - the frame is "Dual Hybrid"
2) the mana cost doesn't use hybrid mana symbols - the frame is "Dual Gold"
Bear this in mind, because the cardmaker will automatically assign a solid Gold frame to cards that have more colors of mana in their mana cost, which doesn't work for two-color cards.

A card that has three or more colors in the mana cost uses a simple solid Gold frame.

Colorless cards also have two options:
1) the card is an artifact - the frame is "Artifact"
2) the card is not an artifact - the frame is "Colorless"

If the card is legendary, use the "Legendary" frame while also utilizing everything else that was said in this section.

Text formatting
After writing out the card, hit "Preview card" and look at your creation. There you still have time to go back and edit the card, so you do this just to see how everything looks.

If any text goes over the border of the text box, go back, find that spot and put the text that is overhanging onto another line. Repeat this process until everything fits neatly into the text box.

Please leave a blank line between each paragraph of text in the textbox. If that doesn't fit, change the text size to "small" and do it that way. If it still doesn't work, your card is too wordy.

If your text is shorter and would leave too much open space under it, consider inserting another blank line at the beginning, which pushes the text downwards. Your text should be centered - leaving the same amount of space above and under it.

***

If there are any other things you want to add, write me, or write in this thread. If I got something wrong, please let me know and I will fix it as soon as possible.

As I've said, you are free to link this to people who need a bit of help making better cards. I am simply trying to universally help those, who are new to card making or just struggle with getting some things right.

Our old tutorial has been outdated for a while. Please enjoy this NEW Update to the Tutorial It might not be complete yet, but I'll keep adding stuff to it!

Tool Bar
The tool bar is located above the comment box. It has practically everything you need to post your cards, contests, ideas, comments and so much more.

Bold, Italics and Strikethrough
Highlight the text you want to modify and select the proper button, Bold, Italics or Strikethrough.

Ordered and Unordered Lists
Next up on the Tool Bar are the Ordered and Unordered List Buttons

Ordered

Ordered

Ordered

Unordered

Unordered

Unordered

Lists are great for just that... Making lists. Just type out your list one line at a time. You can type out the whole list, then highlight everything and select your desired format, or type the first item, highlight and select your desired list, and then continue to add to your list, one line at a time. If you hit enter twice at the end of your list, you'll return to the normal text format.

Format

Heading 1 and Heading 2
These selectors allow you to easily toggle two larger sizes of font. Just as before, you just highlight the desired text to be resized and select the sizing option you want.

Heading 1

Heading 2
Here you can see the differences in size

Quote, Code and Spoiler

Use the Quote selector for this

Use the Code selector for this

Use the Spoiler selector for this

Emoji
Here you have a selection of 16 preloaded emoji's

Url
Here is where you add links to text and pictures.

Link Text
Links are vital, because they can lead to favorites. It's less likely for someone to go through a lot of effort to find your card, especially an older card, if there isn't a way to get there easily. That's where links come in!

If you want add a text link to your cards, all you need to do is copy the url from the page you want to link, type the word or words you want to lead people to your card, highlight those words and paste the url into the url selector.

Oath Of Tomigon
Link Card

If you want to link your card picture, you just need to put the card image in your comment box, copy the page url, select the picture and then paste the url into the url selector.

As you can see, visual links have a greater impact!

Attach File

I haven't used this at all, but this feature allows you to post small text files and pictures from your computer.
Alright, you want to do this?, or how about making a link look something like this?

Here's how, html coding, I figured this out a bit ago, and have been using it for making my links look nicer, and I know a few of you use it to make italics. If you're one of the people who use italics you're one step closer to doing everything else than everybody else, and for those who have yet to figure it out yet, it's the same way you do italics on the cards.
Of course I can't use the proper characters for demonstration purposes so instead I'll be replacing the > with ] and < with [.
With the coding you'll always need to have the opening code, and the closing one. If you forget the closing part then your text will do whatever that coding says until the next closing of the proper type or the end. It should look like this (except with proper symbols) [abc="gettingtoit"]text stuff[/abc]

so first off bold and underline are just [b]bold[/b] and [u]underline[/u]
also handy the line not made out of a thousand dashes the [hr]

With that aside, the four things I'll put up here are url linking, font color, font face (text style), and font size.

URL Linking
for making links - [a href="entertheurlrighthere"]the text that's going to show up as link[/a]

Text Color
for coloring your text - [font color="entercolornamehere]the colorful text[/font color]
you can also use "#RRGGBB" instead if you feel more technical (and can actually make sense of that), and there are online resources for getting more than just basic colors if you want more details in your approach to coloring.

Font Face
font face is basically the same as color but instead it's ["font face="nameoffontface"](don't forget the closing part) you can find font face names by using Word, Google docs etc to look them up, though some won't work.
Font Size
finally size, this is just [font size=1-7] (and the coding closing of course) 2 is reg size, 1 is small, and the rest are just bigger and bigger.

If you want to do more there's plenty of online html coding stuff that will be helpful.
have a nice day!

FYI: there's plenty of html coding which doesn't work on here, and also always double check your previews for any hiccups.

Tutorial - Card Balancing

So, you've just come up with an awesome idea, found some killer art and even came up with the perfect name. Congratulations, you're well on your way to making good card. But then, to your horror, you see an empty field in the design form. Something you've completely forgotten about. Something that keeps many good cardsmiths awake at night.

The casting cost field.

With a gasp, you click the field and start thinking, "This card is black. Maybe blue/black? Ok so it needs blue and black. How many colored mana symbols do I need? Is it more blue or black? What about hybrid or phyrexian mana? And then how much colorless mana on top of that? Should it be 2? 3? If I post it at 2 people might say this is overpowered but if I post it at 3 they might say it is underpowered! What the heck should I do? And how much should this ability cost?!"

Well, as some of you have probably seen from many of my long, long, long-winded explanations that pop up in the comments of a lot of cards, I have a thing for balance and playability and have some advice and guidelines for helping my fellow cardsmiths make cards fair in addition to awesome.

Part 1 - What is balance?

A balanced card is one that has a reasonable value/cost ratio. Now any reasonable person following along would immediately ask themselves, what is cost and what is value?

Costs
Most commonly in MTG, cost is mana required to pay a spell. A spell's mana cost breaks down even further into colorless mana, colored mana (including the new <> mana), hybrid mana and phyrexian (shock) mana. The most difficult type of mana to pay for is colored mana. That is why cards that cost two different types of colored mana generally provide more value than ones that only require one, cards that cost three different types of colored mana provide more value than two, etc. The next most difficult type of mana to play is hybrid mana. It is easier than colored mana because you have the option of paying multiple colors to satisfy the requirement. Next up is phyrexian mana, easier to play than both colored and hybrid mana. While it can require you to pay the cost with a source of colored mana, phyrexian mana lets you pay 2 life in order to cover that requirement instead. At first glance this would seem more dangerous than other costs but in practicality, it's actually almost not a threat. Most players are happy to shuck 2 or 4 life away in order to cast a card that would normally be 3cmc with multiple colored mana sources for {1} instead. Health, as Wizards learned early on but regularly forgets, is not a particularly valuable resource. Some have argued that this is even easier to pay than colorless mana since you don't have to tap a mana source to use it. Lastly there is colorless mana which any mana source can pay for, making it arguably the easiest cost.

For example, a spell that costs {1}{r} is easier to cast than a spell that costs {r/g}{r/g} which is easier to cast than a spell that costs {r}{r}. This is why a card's converted mana cost isn't the only factor in whether or not the cost is appropriate for the card.

So how about some other costs? MTG cards throughout history have come up with all kinds of strange and interesting way to pay for a card that isn't just a mana cost for a value. Suspend often gives you greater value for the cost by making you wait a certain number of turns before you can cast it. Madness makes you have to be in the process of discarding a card before you can pay the reduced mana cost. Some cards require you to reveal cards from your hand, discard cards or have certain cards in play in order to cast them. Many cards require creatures to be sacrificed to help pay for them. Essentially, a cost on a card is anything that you don't want to happen by playing it or in order to play it. It is something that harms you directly (losing life, losing creatures/permanents, having to meet special requirements) or indirectly (having your opponent draw cards, letting them gain life or anything else that would benefit them). To save space on this post, I'll put a list of (very) rough mana cost equivalents for alternate costs in a following post.

Finally for costs, there's rarity. A card that costs {1}{w} at common will almost always be strictly worse than a version of that card that costs the same at uncommon. However, in practical terms, rarity only really impacts your chance at drafting a card or finding it in a pack and not its availability. Rarer cards may cost more but just because a card is rare or mythic doesn't mean it gets a free pass at balancing.

Values
Almost anything any player can do in MTG has value. Power and toughness? Value. Drawing a card? Value. Dealing damage? Value. Even things that would seem like hurting yourself, like milling yourself or taking damage can have value in the right circumstances. Given that there are something like 15,000 unique MTG cards at the time I'm writing this, there are almost as many examples of different values provided by cards. The way you should think about it is that any value you provide must have an associated cost. Many cards cardsmiths make start as an idea of how to add value to the game for the caster. The two most common sources of value are swinging the board state (adding value to your side of the battlefield or removing it from an opponent's) and managing hands (drawing cards for yourself or removing cards for your opponents). In a game of MTG, you usually need at least one of those two to be in your favor to win but usually it is some combination of the two.

When balancing cards, you don't just have to consider changing the cost, you also have to consider changing the value. Maybe your 10/10 doublestrike trampler is a bit excessive. Perhaps that double strike should be first strike and that 10/10 should be more like an 8/2. There are plenty of ways of reducing a card's value without changing the idea you found so appealing.

Hello, everyone. Recently, I've seen some common pitfalls that most custom sets and other regular cards have had - some of which most people don't even notice. So, I'm going to bring to light some of these pitfalls in hopes that people will be able to circumvent these issues and create even better sets.

I will not be addressing flavor or non-gameplay concerns.

Keep the Non-Evergreen Mechanics minimal
This is one of the most common issues with designing a set - too many mechanics. Older sets, like Lorwyn, could have 5~ non-evergreen mechanics. Newer sets, such as TBD, have 4~ non-evergreen mechanics which are used to the fullest, with a few returning mechanics usually present.

It is also crucial to remember that not everything has to be keyworded. Take TBD for example; even though it had cards that practically had the Heroic ability, it did not keyword it, to reduce clutter within the number of keywords and mechanics in the set. One-off mechanics, like "Whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters the battlefield", have no reason to be keyworded, and are fine as one-off lines of text.

I will state that there are exceptions to this rule - Modern Horizons and Time Spiral getting all the keywords available, and Dragon's Maze got most guild keywords. However, these are not the norm for keywords, they are the exceptions. Not every deck needs to, nor should, have 10 keywords.

It is also important to note that some other things that would not be considered "Keyword mechanics" are still mechanics. For example, {2/X} mana is a mechanic and keyword counters are non-evergreen. For a list of mechanics that are absolutely keyworded and evergreen, MTGGamepedia has you covered.

Use Non-Defunct and Engaging Mechanics
This is another large issue - using defunct mechanics. These include things like Fear, Shroud, Intimidate and Landwalk. These are defunct for a reason, whether they are outdone by other mechanics (Hexproof and Menace) or have other mechanical problems (Landwalk), I'd advise against using them.

Another prominent issue is a lot more common than you may think - a use of +0/+2 and +0/+1 counters, among other counters. These are HARD to keep track of, and have never been used on any non-reprint card in the 2010's, and for good reason. Think twice before using these counters.

And even if a mechanic is non-defunct, think twice before making it one of your 4~ mechanics. Things like "Rampage X" and "Splice" haven't been printed in Standard for more than 10 years, for good reason.

Make your custom Keywords interesting and Archetype Supportive
Since most sets thus have a limited number of keywords, custom keywords made should be engaging and interesting, not something you can put onto any card and call a day, and don't support anything.

As an example, a mechanic that says "This creature gains First Strike while attacking". Is it a line of text that could see print? Of course. Is it a line of text that you would want to make into a keyword? No. Same for something such as "If you destroyed an enchantment an opponent controls, do X". The mechanic is too narrow, and there isn't any way around that.

An example of a good mechanic is Cycling - it can support pretty much any deck and fit on a wide variety of cards, but can also have certain archetypes built around it, fuel graveyard decks and others. It's interesting and works well.

Seek advice from others as to if the Keyword could see print, and always brainstorm for keywords in the set. The worst thing you can do is get stuck with a terrible Keyword for a mechanic, which doesn't support any archetypes.

Make your Commons feel like Commons
This is what Wizards call the "New World Order", and refers to making commons feel like commons and not rares. For this, I'll link an article by Wizards themselves that established the ground rules for making a common feel like a common.

For a short version, don't print cards with 18 lines of text and 3 different keywords at common. They may fit the power level of a common, but they don't fit the complexity of commons for the sake of things like Pauper. The same also applies to power level - don't make it so that a single oppressive common can destroy a limited environment. Seek advice from others as to if a common is too good.

Use a Skeleton, and other Principles
Both color balancing and a design skeleton are important aspects of designing a set. This article by WotC goes over the usage of a design skeleton, and how to use it. While the article itself is a bit outdated (Tribal is defunct now), it goes over the basics on using a design skeleton.

Within the article, there are also plenty of guidelines for card distribution - sets being about 50% creatures, the general spells and keywords each color gets, eta. For a slightly more in-depth look at distribution which is newer, you can read it here.

Keep your Archetypes limited

Rarely, a set focuses on too many archetypes. The more archetypes a set has, the more cards that need to be devoted to each of these archetypes. The issue arises when there you can't draft enough cards devoted to an archetype because of how many archetypes there are and how thinly spread the card pool is for each of these archetypes, leading to unplayable decks that couldn't build around the archetypes.

You should also limit the colors on most archetypes - for example, if your set has a B/R Goblins archetype, don't print Goblins support in U/W. Not every archetype has to have support for each color.

Typically, it is best to cap the number of archetypes at a max of 10, as any more is just overkill.

Make your Common Cards support Multiple Archetypes
This is a simple tip - design common cards that support multiple themes, while also keeping the cards simple. I'll use an example from a newer set - Mistral Singer, a 3 mana 2/2 with flying and prowess in Blue. Minstral Singer supports three of the four blue archetypes - it benefits off of the Spells that "U/G Card Draw" played, it's a flying creature for the purposes of U/W Flyers, and it has Prowess for the sake of U/R Spellslinging.

A lot of common cards should be like Mistral Singer - supportive of multiple archetypes. Cross-pollination is the key to allowing players to draft archetypes, allowing a single card to be drafted by any number of players each going a different archetype.

I hope these basic pieces of advice can help someone out there, even though they probably won't and it's likely just rambling.

Perhaps I've been playing too much God of War (the Norse Mythology one) or perhaps I've watched Thor: Ragnarok a few too many times, but I think I've had a brilliant idea for a set.

By now, you've probably already guessed that I want to combine MTG with Norse Mythology. Here's how I imagine the thing playing out:

Ragnarok
One of the main ideas I had for this concept is the idea of Ragnarok. Certain cards will cause Ragnarok to begin (by saying '...begin Ragnarok'). Once it begins, several cards, such as Fire Giants, Fenris Wolf, Naglfar, and Loki himself, will be able to do far more. For example, Fenris Wolf probably couldn't attack or block untill Ragnarok began. Once Ragnarok begins, however, all Hel breaks loose.

Red
Red, of course, gets Fire Giants. However, Fire Giants generally won't be doing anything until after Ragnarok begins, so we also need to give Red to someone else. I think Dwarves would fit the bill pretty well, seeing as Dwarves are usually red in MTG, and the Dwarves of Norse Mythology are your generic craftspeople with a temper who have big hammers despite their small size.
Here we've got an example of Surt, the king of the Fire Giants, Lord of Muspelheim, and a representation of ultimate destruction to the Norse:

Green
Green will go to the Vanir. For those of you who don't know, the Vanir are the nature-y gods such as Frey, Freya, and Njord, who live in Vanaheim. However, since we don't want Green to only go to gods, Elves get Green too. Which makes since, because they're Elves. And Elves are Green.
Here we've got an example of Skirnir, the Sword that Frey gave up in order to marry the Giantess Gerd (I think technically, Skirnir is the messanger who took the sword, but I honestly couldn't find the actual name of the sword). It is fated to be used by Surt to kill Frey during Ragnarok, and it's all Frey's fault:

Blue
Blue goes to the Frost Giants. Was there ever any doubt? The Frost Giants, or Jotunns, are tricky and powerful. They like stealing things, transforming into things, tricking gods into thinking that they're very powerful when they actually aren't, and doing all the things that Blue likes to do. However, since we don't want Blue to be all Frost Giants, some Aesir, like Mimir (who knows everything and his severed head is stuck in a well) and Vanir like Njord (who's a god of the sea, so it would be kinda weird putting him in Green) can be Blue as well.
Here we've got an example of Skrymir, whose name actually means 'the boaster', the one who tricked Thor into a wrestling contest with Jormungandr and a drinking contest in which he had to drink the ocean and a fight with old age. When Thor tried to hit him with his hammer, Skrymir put a mountian in his place, and pretended like he felt nothing:

White
White goes to the Aesir. The Aesir, for those of you who don't know, are the gods of war and fighting, and thunder, and hammers, and hitting things, and that sort of thing, which makes them sound very Red. However, they're also the good guys, and have among them Baldur, who can't be killed by anything but mistletoe (protection from everything except mistletoe I guess?) and Odin, a wise poetry god. However, since we don't want white to be all gods, humans are white as well.
Here's an example of Valhalla, in Asgard, which is where all the dead people go if they lived a short life in which they fought lots of people. Everyone else goes to Hel. Everyone in Valhalla, however, will be called to arms again when Ragnarok comes, and will exit from the 540 doors that Valhalla has, through which 800 people can walk at once:

Black
Black goes to the bad guys. Well, they're not all bad, I suppose. We've got giant-kin like Fenris Wolf, Skoll and Hati, and Hel, of course. Maybe Jormungandr too. I imagine Loki being blue/black. Naglfar, the Boat of Nails (I'll let you think that by 'nails' I mean regular, metal ones) would probably be a black vehicle of some sort which could only work after Ragnarok has begun. Zombies (draugr for Norse Mythology) are black too, as are most undead and forces of Hel.
Here's an example of Skoll and Hati, the two wolves which chase the Moon and Sun, respectively. When they catch those two celestial objects and eat them, Ragnarok will begin. This is one of the many causes of Ragnarok beginning, along with Fenris Wolf breaking free, Loki breaking free, Jormungandr... doing something, and, of course, whenever the Norns ordain it:

The Nine Realms
I also want to represent the Nine Realms with a cycle of lands. However, since there are Nine Realms and Five Colors of mana to divide... well, I guess we'll just have to figure it out.

By now, you're wondering why I posted this as a discussion. This isn't a contest, it's more just inspiration for cardsmiths out there. If you feel inspired to make some Norse Mythology based cards, feel free to post them here. If not, then don't. If you already have Norse Mythology based cards, I would love to see them, even if they don't fit the mold I've set here. And if you didn't want to read that huge wall of text, I underlined the important parts.

So you’ve used Corwinnn’s amazing tutorial to make top notch cards? You’ve made lots of friends along the way? Are you ready to take the next step? And design, run, create and perfect an entire Set????
http://forums.mtgcardsmith.com/discussion/497/tutorial-cardsmithing-m15-or-the-art-of-making-custom-cards/p1

Welcome to the set tutorial!!! By Noobplayzgames. Before we start I would like to say thanks to:
@Tomigon for the idea
@Corwinnn for suggesting I do it (and helping me with all my sets.)

Getting Started
Making a set requires many different aspects including: Help, concept, setting, story, characters, adventures, species, creatures, factions (guilds, clans, broods), custom abilities and whatnot. Let’s begin.

Concept
First you have to come up with an idea. Usually no specifics are needed. Be it:
ForgottenDragons = Broods not in Dragons of Tarkir
Hellfall = Angels, Demons, Devils, Sirens, Fallen Angels, Humans < Planeswalkers
It is that simple. Since you need no details yet, this is the best way to describe it to friends.

Help & Friends
The way I’ve started all of my sets is by messaging (using the forums) a group of my MTG Cardsmith friends. Good, popular Cardsmiths. People like @Corwinnn who I’ve worked with for a while. Someone you trust to make good cards, who will listen and act upon your ideas, suggestions and “orders.” Remember you are the boss of this set. Make sure you are in control of everything. Whenever something happens, make immediate contact with the Cardsmith. See their intentions, ideas, facts and opinions. You can take on the endeavor by yourself, but I wouldn’t recommend it. People can be difficult, but if you find the rights ones, the set will be a lot easier.

The messages you send out should consist of an introduction to your set. Plans, ideas, timeframes, reasons why you want help, and reasons why you want to make this set so much. Once everyone responds, make a new chat with the people who have accepted. They will ask questions, pose ideas to the setting, name, lore and give other opinions. Once everything there is settled, make the account. Tell them the name and password in the chat, and tell them don’t make any cards until approved. (This is important)

Setting
Now that you have your crew of all first mates, it’s time for you guys to think of specifics. Let’s say you want to make a sci-fi set, like Shadows of Gyfiri 2.0. Talk about it, do you want to keep it in Gyfiri? Or change it to another place? Let’s say the 5 factions (usually have 5 factions, breaking this is ok, but it makes it much harder to make cycles and cards of more colors; if you want to have 10 for something like Ravnica, only do it if you already have a base.) are all Shards, think of names, locations, types of people, races, specialties, jobs, cities, society. Even if it isn’t written down, flesh out every detail of your world and each faction so that every card that everyone makes fits in and doesn’t need to be changed later. Set it up in the chat like this.
Set Name:
Plane:
Plane Properties:
Factions:
Name: Colors:
Name: Colors:
Name: Colors:
Name: Colors:
Name: Colors:

Lore
This is the tedious part. Take the world and give it a story. How did people start? Are there creators? Describe the beasts and animals and where they live. Say how the factions started, why they are separate, who or what gave them their rituals, their magic powers. It is easiest if these are already based off real life or other fictional things (Theros = Greek myths, Kamigawa = Japanese religion, Khans block = Ancient China; Gangs of Cryptar = Gyfiri, Forgotten Dragons = Dragons of Tarkir). Everything is inspired by something else. Base the celebrations, leaders, factions, armor, soldiers, monsters, lands, beasts all around this inspiration.
Then describe what went wrong. The reason these sets exist is because of some event that’s started a war, or an adventure for a hero or Planeswalker. Write out the event, its cause, immediate and past reproductions. The factions now act to each other how/what do monsters change/do differently? The world has evolved to the beginning of the set from its little egg on paper. Still do not make cards. Remember to copy everything you write into the comment sections of the account. People out of the set use it to understand. People in the set use it for reference.

Characters
This is where you create your heroes. Be it a Planeswalker or a Legendary creature, this is where you make them. Determine their colors, their faction, and based off that faction their abilities and influence in the world before the quest. Tune in to Part 2 for specifics on how to make a super fleshed out character you and your friends want to follow.

In my Cardsmithing past, I used to go on bing/google images to get my artwork. As it turns out, a lot of the art you find there has no artist given. While you can make cards without crediting the art, it's highly frowned upon and deprives the artist of credit, plus it makes it harder, if not impossible, for others to find the art when it's not credited properly. That's why I started getting my artwork through mediums like DeviantArt and ArtStation, since the artist is always provided. However, you don't have to dedicate yourself to a platform just to find an artist, because there's an easy way to find the artist if it's not directly given to you.

TinEye is a life saver. It has worked cardsmithing wonders for me, whether I'm remaking old cards and want to credit the art, or trying to find the artist of a card with uncredited art. Take this card of mine from 2016.

Nice art, amiright? But there's just one problem; the artist isn't credited! I figured this would be the perfect example to use.

Step 1: Save the image you want to find the artist of, cropping if needed

Obviously in a case like this, I had to crop the image down so that the card frame is no longer visible. This is critical. Alterations to or problems with the image could cause TinEye to not work. Your photo viewer should have an option to crop, and you can search the web for ways to crop it, or even do it online. In my case (iPad) I just saved the card image, went to Photos, brought up the image, and clicked Edit. Then, it was simple to crop the image.

Step 2: Go to https://tineye.com/ and upload your image.

TinEye allows you to perform a Reverse Image Search, which can find everywhere an image has appeared, including the source! You'll want to click/tap the arrow, then upload your cropped image. Once that's done, you'll get a results screen.

Note: If you don't get any results, try making sure the art is unaltered, and that you didn't accidentally leave in any card border if you cropped it.

Woah! That's a lot of results! Whether you get 200 results or 20, we won't be getting results that matter from a batch like this.

Step 3: Filter your search

The first thing you should certainly try is clicking the Collections box. Chances are, the art was made by someone on a site like DeviantArt, and they would really appreciate if you credited them.

Now comes the nitty gritty. Chances are, this image appears on multiple pages for several reasons. Thankfully, the file name almost never lies, and we have our work cut out for us.

I scrolled down a little bit, and sure enough, I found the artist, and the source of the image.

Once I clicked the link, it took me straight to DeviantArt, and the page where the original image came from. With their username visible, you can now credit them properly!
