Bergtagning means "mountain-taking" it's something Skogtrolls are known for.
  • @Jedidiah that's a little op. I suggest either nerfing the power and toughness or making it cost mana.
  • Just imagine it's a 2/2 then, you can't cast lands, though I suppose I could make the land type in the text box...

    2016... I'm starting to feel old >.<

Well, I can't enter the contest, but here's some feedback on the cards posted so far:

    • Ferrum Condottiere by LordTachanka123
There is a couple of weird templating issues (the flavour text line is too short and why is the first line centred?) but the effect seems like something WOTC would do nowadays since it's pretty similar to Warded Battlements ^^

    • Kansha, Chef's Honor by Archeo_Luiere
The card is doing something really complicated for not that much of a reward, ultimately it's either a 3/3 with vigilance or an equipment granting +1/+1 and vigilance that will produce a food in combat, which is probably not worth 2RRG. The mechanic might work but would need to be rephrased a bit as state-based actions will unattach anything that is also a creature (rules 704.5p); hence, it needs to be either an equipment or a creature but not both at any time in order to work. Have you considered the Soulbond mechanic from Avacyn Restored or the Bestow mechanic from Theros? They do a bit of the same thing but cleaner ^^ Ultimately, my main advice would be to make the card simpler so it's more appealing to read and easier to balance.

    • Eldritch Fire by ChoyBoi
A really cool and strong rare, it makes me think of a mix between cards like Damnable Pact and Death Wind combined; I think it's really elegant! :) I don't see anything white about this though, this is definitely a monoBlack effect. Also, there is a couple of small templating mistakes. Here's the proper templating (I put Searing Blood and Toxic Deluge as reference for that templating.

"As an additional cost to cast this spell, pay X life.

Eldritch Fire deals X damage to target creature. When that creature dies this turn, you may draw cards equal to half its power, rounded down."

    • Simian Charger by RandomFandom
That's a nice and simple idea, though it looks more like an uncommon than a rare ^^ One thing I would really consider would be to care about creatures with trample, not specifically creatures with trample counters so it feels less parasitic.

To change the size of the cards on the forum, go to html mode (the </> button), find your image and inside the <img> tag add: width=X, where X is the size in pixels. The cards right above this in my message are 300 pixels for reference. Use 233 is you want to squeeze three cards on the same line ^^

    • Lejrin, Ancient Mother
That's some interesting design! I don't think we ever had a similar card in the history of the game so it's difficult to judge, it might actually be worth a rare slot but I'd need to test it to be sure. With this kind of design, you are going to completely shut down attacks from the opponent, so it's very important that it also helps you close out the game as otherwise it would block the game entirely. This is why I think it's a really good idea to add that activated ability, which provides some kind of clock in case the opponent stops doing anything. As a small detail you might improve on the card, since this is legendary you should use the legendary frame which you can find in the "Alternative Card Color/Frame" options below the casting cost box.

    • Bergtagning Skogtroll by Jedidiah
The card is too strong; some decks already play Dryad Arbor, imagine if it was a 4/3 x) It's very easy to fetch on turn 1, play a Mountain on turn 2 (or even more egregious steal one from the opponent) and start attacking for 4 on turn 2. I would recommend getting rid of the land stealing ability and making it more like Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle and less like Dryad Arbor to avoid all the rules issues that come with land creatures as they're a real pain in the neck ;)

    • Beauty Curse (and the) Beast Butcher by CassZero

The templating of the card looks super interesting and ingenuous! Now that modal double-faced cards are a thing though, it's probably a cleaner way of doing it.

I really like the mechanical story that this card tell, you really want to crack the Rose but the Beast needs it. It's really ingenuous! A small bemol though, I don't think it would be worth making a specific rules about Rose tokens since I have a hard time imagining this could be used on a lot of other cards and Clue tokens are more balanced. You can simply write "Create a colorless Rose artifact token with "T, Sacrifice this artifact: Draw a card" without using reminder text and it works great.

I'm also not sure why you gave an option to transform the Beast back? The card probably would read better if it was just a regular DFC card à la Innistrad since it would also help with the Beast being really over the curve. You play it as Belle, get the Rose, then transform it. Simplicity might increase the elegance of the card ^^

    • Shi Qin, Seeker of Immortality by ChoyBoi
I really like the general concept of this card, though I have a couple details that I think could be improved. First, lifesteal is lifelink but weaker so I don't think they would ever keyword this. You don't need to keyword every ability, just write it down as a regular ability and this is fine. Second, the second ability is needlessly wordy. +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters cancel each other so you can just write "Whenever you lose life, put that many -1/-1 counters on Shi Quin, Seeker of Immortality."

    • Raven of Perdition by Obidiah
A nice variation over Grimdancer, you successfully templated it even though it's actually a quite complex ability! Skulk is a little weird in the mix but could work, however shroud is both outdated and not part of Black's slice of the colour pie.

    • Envoy of the Morrigan by Obidiah
I really like this concept, it's original and flavourful. However, the card is likely to yield you at least three 1/1 birds (counting itself) and make the opponent discard two cards over the course of the game. That's on top of any synergy with other discard cards. It's a little much for a two-mana uncommon I think, you probably can make it 3 or 4 mana and it would still be playable ^^
  • @ningyounk - Thank you for stopping by and providing such excellent feedback!

@ningyounk As Animist said, thanks for the feedback! About what you said about Lejrin, you're right, I forgot to add the legendary frame... my bad. I'm not sure it would be good enough to be a rare as it is, but it might be too powerful for limited as an uncommon. Maybe a small nerf to the power/toughness could change that, but I also did want it to be a good card in limited. I think it depends on how aggressive a format it would exist in.

Anyway, here's my second entry, using "Wind up" by JoeMoose

EDIT: I re-did the card. Here's the new version

    Straw Stalker
  • Here's my first entry. I really like to make cool flavored cheap legendary's, so I'm probably going to make a cycle of these kinds of cards for my entries.

  • Here's my second entry.

  • I'm less than two weeks into this website and I absolutely love it. You can see my progression from rookie mistakes to proper design and balance. I play EDH a lot so you'll see a lot of legendary stuff from me. These are my four entries, from day one to now.
  • Welcome to Cardsmith @DadAdventure
  • 2nd entry:

    Using Riposte by me.

  • Reminder that this contest ends 27th October. Thanks to everyone for their entries so far!

If you joined MTG Cardsmith this year, please feel free to enter. Rules and information up top.

  • Third Entry

Hey guys! A couple days new to the site and forums and wanted to throw my hat into this friendly competition.

    1st entry:

    2nd entry:

    Ysolda Seraph of Wills
  • edited October 2020
    3rd Entry:
    Berserker of the Frozen Pass
Accidentally said "Berseker" instead of "Berserker" in the creature type.

    4th Entry:
    Invader of the Frozen Pass

    Hope you like them :)

Okay, editing this, these two creatures are now a single module card. (Can't really show that though with the tools given, or at least don't know how to do it without making it overly confusing.)
  • My fourth and final entry:
    Dreambinder Mage
  • My third and fourth entries:

  • edited October 2020
    Third entry:

    Monastery Avenger
  • Thanks for your entries, everyone. This contest is now closed for judging.

I'm not on the site very much at the moment so I'm not sure exactly when I'll post the winners - hopefully some time next week.
