What is the Color Pie?

There is a lot of talk about the Color Pie, but what exactly is the color pie? I didn't know exactly what it was, having not really played in a very long time. A lot of us aren't familiar with the entire Color Pie dynamic. Well fear not! I am here to share my limited wisdom with YOU!

  • yeah this does help kind of make decks that do more specific things. I don't play very hardcore myself.
  • I would also highly suggest reading Mark Rosewater's articles on the subject. Actually I'd suggest reading MaRo's articles on design period. There's a lot of good stuff in there. This is a pretty brief article on why the Pie is important:

  • I second Nickerton's recommendation wholeheartedly.
  • Pfft. I am more of a cake man myself.
  • Well that is one seriously awesome argument for PIE! I like how it even has a picture of @Teacup on the top of it!
  • Yeah, but it doesn't mention anything about ice cream cake. And that, my friends is nirvana. Best pie can do is slap a scoop of ice cream with it, that rapidly melts and turns into a soup, soiling the bottom of the pie.

    Cake is way more versatile than pie. Pie is crust and filling. The filling can change, but the crust can't, always a bland concoction of cardboard and sugar. Even crust on a pizza is bad, that's why pizza places needed to fill it with cheese! Cake comes in a multitude of flavours with an equally staggering number of frosting options. With the ability to easily limit cake content as well as frosting content, to the perfect amount. Pie? Always the same. Sometimes a little smaller, still the same. Same shape, same dull circle. Cake can be made into a huge variety of things. Cake pops, frozen, dioramas, scenery, cupcakes. Show called Cake Boss? Yeah. Pie Boss? Maybe, but it'd be horrendous, maybe a porno type show.

    Old people make pies, and they're known for it. Why? Because they gave up, and were like "Cake is too hard. I will make one pie, and do it really well, and that's it!"

    People go to school to learn and develop skills to make cakes, improve upon cakes, revolutionize cake.

    Pie is reliability. I like pie, I do. But if I had to choose? Cake. Hands down, everytime.

    Pie = Simplicity done well.
    Cake = Science and engineering of baking. Intelligent and creative.

    It's easy to prove a point when it's one you agree with. ^_^
  • So we have an opposing argument for Cake... and also well played!
    I'm torn... Cake? Pie? Ice Cream?

    How do we feel about Gumbo?
    :D
  • Hmmm... depending on the flavor, I prefer pie or ice cream. Cake isn't that great, in my opinion.

    Any questions?

    I feel that the presented article is highly biased, with a sample size of 1 individual.

    @Suicidal_Deity
    Well said, sir.

    @ Corwinn
    Ice Cream Cake?

    @Looverse
    Sounds like something I've got to try.

    @All

    Can this thread also be used as a community Q and A for color pie questions?
    What about puzzles in the form of questions the kind which appear on the GDS quizzes (in Magic, GDS = Great Designer Search)?

    Simple question:
    What color(s) is First Strike primary in? Trample? Deathtouch?
    Answers: Red, White. Green. Black.
