Feedback on Mechanic Idea - Strategist
Hey,
I am not sure if I am in the right part of the forums, but this seems to be the closest to the topic I want to discuss/ some advice on. In return for help I may also reciprocate in kind, if you value my input.
I am trying to create a mechanic that doesn't seem out of place on White or Blue cards, in a standard setting. I originally came up with a mechanic I called 'In Memoriam' that triggered upon the death of the card, bolstering other creatures temporarily. However it didn't seem great, because it meant - ideally - the trigger would happen before combat, and it was just awkward and not very blue (despite making White more aggressive and blue more defensive). So, I have decided to move to something different, called 'Strategist'.
'Strategist' denotes a creature card that is resolved in playing the long game; ignoring the distracting, fleeting and temporal mixes of current circumstances and focusing on planning. Something which White and Blue are meant to share in flavour.
(For Blue)
Strategist - If this creature's power and/ or toughness would be modified, prevent that effect, draw N cards instead.
(For White)
" "... gain N life instead.
Specific numbers: I am thinking lifegain version gives between 2-5 life, depending on the card and rarity, etc.
For draw a card it would be simply 1-2. I think any more might be too harsh. Although I am prepared to consider adding scry as possible replacement effect; as a lesser version of drawing.
Although I am aware it is fairly specific, and it is as much a negative as a benefit, I am not sure it I would want to change the version that specifies either opponent or 'you'. If it is opponent, then your opponent is most likely going to simply play around it with the few cards he does have, and that doesn't sound as interesting. While 'you' just feels like a weird and - mostly definitely - worse version of Heroic.
Thank you for your help, in advance. Sorry about the messy format.
As a side note: I would like +1/+1 counters and their counterparts to stay on the card - if possible - so if an effect was to remove the ability 'Strategist', they would then the modifying effect would then apply. But I am not sure it can/ is worded so it is possible.
TLDR;
(For Blue)
