@Grimshac - Yes, I really enjoyed the Remora challenges. Yeah, this would be similar to that but with each person making their own set that represents their vision, and not competing to make one set that represents the group. So by the end, if five people completed the challenges, they would be, in theory, 75% to 100% done with a small set.
And I still have 4 or 5 of the cards I made for Remora! I'm secretly waiting for it to come back!
@Corwinnn I might revive the project somewhere down the line - I believe I still have renders of most of the cards that were entered on my Imgur account
To my knowledge no. I might be able to check with mods to see if they have a list, if not, we might be able to just constantly load the front page and copy all the names down. Ha ha.
So (this is still in the works, may happen, may not) my intention is to launch a challenge where everyone makes a card using artwork I create. I enjoy sketching in my free time and (with my self-gifting Christmas 2015) I now own an iPad pro and Apple Pencil. Gotta say it kinda blew my mind how incredibly useful it is in applications like ProCreate.
I would be creating artwork that tries not to suggest a specific color (at least dominantly), letting everyone make whatever kind of card they fancied using that artwork (any type any color), choosing my favorite and uploading a duplicate after retouching the art to fit with the card the winner created.
I mentioned this to @Corwinnn awhile ago (quite a while ago), stuffs been super busy so even though I have the art it isn't ready to upload yet.
If it worked out well I would turn it into a recurring challenge of sorts (maybe monthly if I find time) and we could get some sort of a leader board going on.
We could work it into the circuit weekly challenges, so you'd provide art for one weekly challenge a month (bi-monthly?) if you wanted. Also, I can almost guarantee this, most people will be hoping for Tribal art for tribes that can be hard to find art for, like Merfolk or Vedalken - stuff like that.
Super cool idea regardless, would be pretty awesome if it was executed properly
I'd like to work it into the Circuit Challenges, though how regularly I could produce acceptable artwork I wouldn't hazard to guess, so maybe not bi-monthly or even consistently. I'm a full-time Civil Engineer so that makes me very susceptible to varying workload and so on. Also, as the eldest of 5 siblings with 4 local first cousins, I spend a lot of time with family (part of how I got into MTG--and board games in general--in the first place), which makes my free time fluctuate as well.
I would at least try to incorporate the first one into the Circuit if you'd permit me ( @Grimshac ).
The first art piece is pretty recognizably human (I hope), but I won't limit smiths from any card type so we may see some pretty sweet instant/sorcery/enchantment/artifact spells coming out of this as well.
Since I'd be retouching the photo to align with the color(s) assigned by the winning entry I will be taking a fairly decisive role in judging, and it is likely to be more subjective and flavor oriented, though I will not have a preconceived notion in mind if at all possible. This means that assistant judges, if any, will have to be willing to take a "back-seat" to myself during the allocation of the winners, their role would be to debate and make suggestions more than to cast votes.
Maybe the top 3 people at the end of the first contest can try to agree on what the subject matter for the following art piece would be. I will have to warn everyone that I am a hobbyist and a learner and my actual artistic ability is still in question so they shouldn't expect too much necessarily ;D
Contests with rarity restrictions are a good idea, because they allow multiple variations of the same contest, and will no doubt develop different entries as a result of the restriction.
Also, judging commons against rares is a weird thing to do. A little bit apples and oranges, y'know.
I agree. I'm growing more and more convinced that making commons and uncommon are a beautiful thing when done properly and uniquely.
And even if it was a monthly contest broken down into into four weekly challenges. First week common, second uncommon, etc. I think it would offer a nice deviation while requiring less strenuous thinking on a judges part for constant new ideas.
And obviously a single contest can promote only certain rarities as well.
I also found that people liked when I did the Wall-y World contest and offered better rewards for winning at lower rarities. It's usually harder to win with commons and uncommons. So the boon of additional rewards seemed to entice people into trying their hand at them.
That's a good idea Ransom, for creating lasting longevity with contests.
Had an idea: Design a card which gives the opponent a choice between multiple effects or makes the opponent offer you a choice between multiple effects.
Examples: Fact or Fiction, Gifts Ungiven, Choice of Damnations, etc. Punisher effects like Browbeat, Temporal Extortion, and Vexing Devil are also acceptable.
Rules for this contest could offer bonus points if the card is a green or white card (because such effects are rare in those colors), and forbid multicolored cards as well as punisher effects-- that way, there is actually some challenge involved.
Planar Chaos meets RTR: Create a card that contains a RTR block mechanic, but in a color that isn't one of the two it was originally in. Commons only for the first version of this. Uncommons only for the second iteration, then rare and so forth. Restricting the rarity allows us to better judge one card against another. And it lets us get more mileage out of the idea, because we can use the same idea for multiple different contests.
How about this for a commander challenge: Make a custom legendary rare/mythic commander out of an official WOTC common/uncommon creature. Take something mundane and make it epic! Keep the original color and keep the name similar or same as the original, but add other colors too if flavor requires. Maybe official WOTC art allowed?
Yo fellas, I got all these ideas and I'd like to ask what you guys think.
Ideas for contests.
-1 mana 20/20 and 20 mana 1/1 -Make a lower cost card (Affinity, Delve, blah blah blah) -Make a card using mechanics of my choice -Claim the Dragon's Maze 2 -Make an Elf tribal -Make a mythic version of a random card -Make a black version of a random card -Make an Eldrazi version of a random card -Ongoing challange (First person makes a card and says what kind second person needs to make, and so on.)
Ideas for Just for fun contests.

@TrippleBoggey3 Personally, I like the idea of 'upgrade a random card to mythic status'. You could get participants to Random Card on gatherer, and then post the result in the same post as their upgraded version. Making an Animist card should probably also be a must
@TrippleBoggey3, I really like contests that specify rarity, because they allow for multiple variations. For example, first participants "upgrade a random card to mythic" then you could have one in which participants "downgrade a rare/mythic random card to uncommon".
Also, I really like this idea that I just came up with: make a legendary creature out of a planeswalker, or a planeswalker out of a legendary creature.
I'm pretty sure there have been challenges about remaking some of the strongest cards in Magic's history, but what about a challenge that involves bringing some of the weakest cards in Magic up to par while retaining their original flavor and function? For example:

Tedious, but nerds revel in that kind of detail.

Yo, I'm also planning on making a goodbye contest for Animist, but I want to keep it a secret. Whadaya think?
Also, do not do this: "-Make me a politically incorrect card!!!"
Make a conspiracy
Make a card that cares about the monarchy
Make a voting card
I didn't include "goad" or "melee" because they don't exactly inspire innovation, you can just slap them on a card and say "Done!".
