Okay, so I've been thinking about doing this for a while, so I'll tell you guys about it. I was thinking about making a contest every day during December. I'd make the contests a bit shorter to reduce spam, of course. And I've already gotten 20 decent contest ideas, plus another month to prepare. What do you guys think?
@DragonFaceEater - It sounds good, but you have to remember, in December a lot of people will not be available every day. The vast majority of Cardsmiths here are at the mercy of their parents schedule, so you may get days with few entries, if any.
@strongbelieves makes a good point... 30 different topics will drive everyone else's threads off the page, so that might not endear you to very many people. XD
- Make a Non-Red Dragon - Make a card with NO mana cost (It can't be cast) - Pick a card someone else made and make a card that has lore interactions with that card - Make an artifact land - Make a land creature - Challenge: Design a whole new faction - Make an ally - An artwork challenge (where someone creates a card, gives the next guy an artowrk, and so on and so on
Just for fun contests:
- Make a card called 'Foegod, Master of Iron' (Don't just remake the original.) - Make some chickens!
Custom card discussion:
--ALL THE ART YOU WILL EVER NEED -- (Basically a thread for all the best artwork out there, organized into groups of colour, and then the kinda cards that could have that card as their art e.g. Green bump spells, human warrior artworks...)
Tutorials:
- What Makes a Good Mechanic (This might already exist, idk.)
I'd appreciate any feedback on these ideas you can give.
@KimJongMartin All of those ideas seem cool, but I feel like the "Make a whole new faction" challenge may not attract too many entries, since i'm guessing you would want more than one entry. Also, it might get a bunch of joke entries, so if you don't want them, you should specify. The artwork challenge may have been already done before, but it might have not been. I just think I remember seeing it.
The just for fun contests seem cool, no problems here!
The all the art you will ever need is a really cool thread, I really like it!
That tutorial seems genius! I think it would be really helpful to all of the new cardsmiths!
Not sure what to call it, but it's where we answer the big questions. For example, Cats vs. Dogs; people make hounds and cats, to fully determine the question.
So, I had an idea for a tutorial, but I didn't really know where to ask around about it, so I decided to just put it here. It's something along the lines of: "A Maker's Guide to Winning More Contests" It would be some sort of process of giving a contest entry a better chance of winning. I would give an example of a made-up contest and a made-up poorly made entry at the beginning, and then go through a step-by-step process to making it better. So, the first example of the card would have bad art, poor grammar and MTG language, balance and creativity issues, it wouldn't stick to the contest theme very well, etc, and I would just go through each issue and fix it on the card, making a new version to show off the changes. I wouldn't want people to think that I'm all high and mighty thinking I know the only way to make good cards, so I would definitely put some sort of disclaimer at the beginning, and be very careful about my wording, specifying that this is all my opinion. I would like some suggestions on some other steps for the tutorial. Also, just so you know, I think it would be cool if it was a 3-section tutorial, so section one would be Looks, section two would be Balance, and three would be Creativity. Each section would have separate steps for improving that section. What do you think?
Well, I've made a rough draft of the Tutorial. What do you think?
______________________________________________________________________________________ Disclaimer: This is all my opinion. I do not think that this is the only way to make cards, this is just a list of some tips that should help you win more contests. If you think that some of the tips here are false, please tell me, I would like to fine-tune this guide as much as possible.
So, I thought that since I see a lot of cards entered into my contests that have some room for improvement, I thought that I should make a tutorial on helping you fine-tune your cards. Lets get started.
So, hypothetically, let's say that someone enters a card into a contest where you have to make a mermaid tribal card. I'm going to show this card that I made and do a step-by-step process on fixing it. (I'm keeping the card at common rarity just because it changes throughout the steps)
Section 1: Looks
Step 1: Grammar For the first step, we will fix the grammar on the card. That includes adding capital letters, periods, commas, etc.
Step 2: MTG Language For the second step, we will correct the MTG language of the card.
Step 3: Art For the third step, we will improve the art of the card, giving it art that looks like something that WOTC would use.
Section 2: Balance
Step 4: OP Combos For the first step, you will look for any sort of abilities that combo with themselves to make the card overpowered and remove them.
Step 5: Keep removal in mind You need to make sure you remember that cards can killed with removal. In this example, Lightning Bolt can kill this creature. This may not be a bad thing, but in this example, I don't want the creature to be killed so easily.
Step 6: Tweaks Now, you just make some tweaks to the balance. I'm not sure how this would apply for your card, but just try to imagine it getting played in a regular game of modern, in commander, standard, and try to make sure it can't be broken. It's fine if you can build a deck around it and it's a lot better than normal, but not fine if you can put it in a deck with a few other cards and you just win the game. Also, just look at the card, see if it is really balanced. This should take you a minute or two, since it is very important that you get it right.
Section 3: Creativity
Step 7: Abilities Make sure that the abilities are very creative and original. Something that you don't really see every day. In this case, I want the card to represent more aggressive abilities, since you don't see that too much with Merfolk, and will add another ability to keep it balanced.
Step 8: Creative Name This could also go in looks, but I decided to put it in here since the title tends to change as you change the abilities. Just make sure that the title is creative and original.
And there you go! I think that this card has a much better chance of winning that merfolk contest, don't you? I hope that this has helped you with your cardsmithing!
Something strange is happening...Every time someone comments on this thread I get a notification - even though it's not mine, and they haven't mentioned me! Any help?
@DragonFaceEater, @Corwinnn... First of all, I never ever have a set, rigid set of rules for MTGCardsmith. Second of all, I often don't even know what I put down on my cards. Just see the ratio of broken cards to not-broken cards! Fourth, and probably the tip you were looking for, I just really like goofy cards that are outside the box. That's it, really.
@Gelectrode, People usually prefer nice people to win their contests. It's a subcauntious habit. This is why @Faiths_Guide wins a bunch of mine and one person in particular only wins when no one enters.
Comments
@strongbelieves How would I put that many contests in one thread? I feel like it would be too overwhelming for all of the people reading it.
XD
I'm probably gonna do it a bit later though, after christmas, so more people are around.

That tutorial seems genius! I think it would be really helpful to all of the new cardsmiths!
For the 'Faction' thingamigy, you could just enter the leader of the faction, or a important creature in the faction.
For the daily contest thing, you could do a daily flavor text contest...
Not sure what to call it, but it's where we answer the big questions. For example, Cats vs. Dogs; people make hounds and cats, to fully determine the question.
That seems pretty cool. I think the only problem with it is that some contests have certain guidelines, so it wouldn't apply to all contests.
