Favorites

How do people get 12 favorites on a card? The highest I've reached is 3. I want to know what makes people favorite on cards. (Of course not to get more favorites...[Play dramatic music here])

  • There are many prevailing thoughts and ideas, but in my opinion it really boils down to a few key elements.

    1. Cardsmiths - Depending what Cardsmiths are on at any given time will greatly influence favorites. Some people don't give out favorites unless they are really impressed by a card, some look for certain aspects that appeal to them at the moment, and some just come on to make cards and don't really look at other cards. People have their own reasons for liking what they do, and it all really boils down to hoping that the people who might like your card actually see it (the follow feature is designed to help you see some of your favorite card makers without having to wade through everyone's cards)

    2. Design - This can be based on art, prevailing card interest, challenge/contest entries, proper formatting, correct spelling, and even humor. Some folks like certain aspects of design, and if that piece is missing, they tend to not be impressed.

    3. Timing - Often times when you make a card is just as important as how you make the card. Cards made late at night might not be seen by the same folks who make cards during the day. Making cards on a Friday night? Friday nights here tend to be slow because of Friday Night Magic.

    4. R&D - I wasn't sure how to identify this, but some people, myself included come on and spend a lot of time in "R&D" mode. Counting cards in sets, designing cards, looking for that perfect piece of art or whatever you do when you're not making cards. I spend a good deal of time on different accounts (Forgotten Dragons, Athera, TheMechanix) and will often see a card I like, but often don't get back to them to add in a favorite.
  • Leaving a comment on a card (not every card please) that you might like a lot and want thoughts on can help as well. When looking at people's cards I often look at the "Also on MTG Cardsmith" section at the bottom and read comments on various cards. And, if I see something interesting or a request for advice, I'll check it out.
  • Nice layout and grammar is something I enjoy too. If a card looks aesthetically pleasing all around, from the framing to how the text is formatted, etc, there's a chance I'll favorite it.
  • I think "2" in Corwinnn's comment is the biggest element after all..

    Well, I don't know about 12 favorites but I did get 29 once :P

If your card gets featured there is a good chance favorites will spike!

Another key feature I should point out on how people get favorites (tag onto #1 from @Corwinnn ) is who the person is and how many follow him/her. There are plenty of cards on the site that are essentially getting favorites just because the cardsmith is well liked. Most of these cardsmiths have earned their spots, but, even if they come out with a dud their fanbase is right there adding favorites in spite of that fact.

To become well known just keep making your best cards and participating in contests!

Everything Corwinnn said is completely correct, and the main thing here is definitely TIMING! You HAVE to hit US-prime-times to really get a lot of favourites.

One thing that Corwinn didn't mention, but that others have, is involving yourself in general.
Talk to people, comment on cards. Participate in contests. Make your own contest.

Some people are much more picky about favouriting (Read: Me) and it is very different what appeals to people - Cleanliness of design is a good path to travel, and your card either needs to look very "real" or be something new and interesting to become really noticed.

I recently made this just to pull @Faiths_Guide 's leg, and somehow people flocked to it with favourites.

And then there's, uh... longevity? Seniority? People like MrRansom, Tomigon, Corwinn and many others have been here a long time and have slowly built up followers that way
  • Listen to this man ( @Grimshac ).
  • Good cards get good favorites sometimes. It's also a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy in that cards that get favorites get seen more and get more favorites.
  • As someone who's only ever done it twice, I can say that a definite factor for getting favorites is the power of the front page. While that does require a few favorites to begin with, once your card gets there, the number of favorites it gets can very easily double, triple, or even quadruple.

Even my shodily designed cards have gotten a fair number of likes just by landing on the front page on a slow day (which is also a matter of timing).
  • Wow... Lost cleric has 7 likes and counting! http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/lost-cleric
