The upper hand

Okay, this challenge is to make 2 planeswalkers or legendary creatures to fight each other in a duel deck. You only need to make the two cards, not the whole decks (But major bonus points if you do). The only thing is: one has to have the upper hand. For example, Bolas vs. a really bad Chandra. Who's going to win that duel? Or make Avacyn vs. The Gitrog Monster 2.0 (That may not be the best example, since I would buy that duel deck no matter what.)

Also, You may make the 2 cards, and then bit by bit make 2 decks.

So yeah, have fun!

The winner will get a follow and some favorites.

Duel away!

    Driggle of Snork
    VS
    Jester Kauyon

Because of the speed and lower CMC I think in a 1v1 @Drigglesnork would womp on @Kauyon, though, personally, I like the jester a bit better ;)
  • So speed vs Cunning, basically?

Haha, close. I called it Mass vs Mirth actually :D
  • BTW, look at all of the duel decks made and you will notice a surprising trend: The decks with the better foily mythic rare on the front is always worse than the other. This pattern has occured with the Blessed vs Cursed, Zendikar vs Eldrazi, Speed vs Cunning, Heroes vs Monsters, Izzet vs Golgari (actually, they were both pretty even but Golgari had the upper hand) and other ones I have seen but not played. IT'S A CONSPIRACY!
  • Elspeth vs. Kiora. Elspeth rocks, but never has Elpseth won for me.

Also, which is worse in Blessed vs. Cursed? Mindwrack demon?
  • @ZendikarIncarnate I've played probably about six hours worth of matches playing both Blessed and Cursed, and I can confirm Mindwrack Demon is the superior card since Geist of Saint Taff has to swing and is fragile, and Cursed generally wins.
  • I have one right now, but I'm still deciding if I want Jurvos in there. Though he presents a threat, his mana cost makes him highly inefficient as opposed to Jhara, who enters the battlefield early and makes you pay for it.

  • There are a few planeswalkers that are explicitly more powerful than most of the others. Judging a planeswalker's 'strength' isn't that easy since they have such varied skill sets but there are a few that are above and beyond most of the others.

The first is obviously Nicol Bolas. Even before he absorbed most of the Conflux in Alara he was top-tier in terms of power. Now he's back to nearly pre-mending levels of strength. He beat Jace and Tezz combined, he beat Ugin, his planeswalker card is one of the few that can simply destroy other planeswalkers.

The next two would be Sorin and Ugin. Ugin was able to put up a decent fight against Nicol Bolas. He's got an astounding level of power with colorless mana and can fight using powerful magic and physical maneuvers simultaneously.

Sorin has shown his strength compared to other planeswalkers quite a few times. He scares the pants off of Liliana, a powerful necromancer. He's explicitly stronger than Jace as well. A portion of his power (Avacyn) was able to fight evenly with a supercharged Nahiri when she arrived on Innistrad. He was also exponentially more powerful than Dack Fayden and Sifa Grent (who Dack killed). One of his planeswalker cards also has him able to kill three other planeswalkers simultaneously. As for how Sorin stacks up to Ugin, they seem to mostly treat one another as equals with perhaps a slight edge to Ugin.

The last one oddly is Garruk. He seemed to be on the strong end of normal compared to most planeswalkers in his early iterations but ever since he was cursed by the chain veil and turned a little crazy, he's gotten quite the upgrade. Now he's essentially the ultimate hunter/predator. Some examples of his power are that a chain veil-boosted Liliana can barely even escape from him. His transformation was strong enough to destroy the entire plane of Shandalar (though it was suppressed). He beheaded the planeswalker Vronos, making one of the very few confirmed times one planeswalker killed another. In general, the last few times anyone has even seen Garruk, they have either died or had to escape from him.

Karn is a bit of an odd one. The only reason I didn't include him is because it is hard to judge his strength relative to other planeswalkers. His card is immensely powerful but that could be since it was him on the plane he created himself where it would theoretically be easier for him to exile things. He's also a portion of Urza's power. Before the mending, Urza was arguably the most or 2nd most (behind Yawgmoth) powerful single entity in the multiverse. It is also possible he has some of Venser's power.

Two honorable mentions for planeswalker power are Ajani and Elspeth. Ajani was able to use a bit of the Maelstrom power to enhance his mirroring power enough to fight on par with Nicol Bolas. The mirroring power turns the strength of an opponent against them. Elspeth was also able to slay the planeswalker-turned-god Xenagos with some help.

I made both good, with both having a fighting chance, but I think it'd be debatable that one's better than another.

  • Rogues V. Kithkin

I feel like Rogues would have the advantage based off of these two single cards alone. Prowl provides immediate synergy with the Rogue type, while Torin provides none for his tribe.
  • 1st is @Faiths_Guide with Mass vs. Mirth
2nd is @jabrewer79 with Rogues Vs. Kithkin
    3rd is @Biblio with Ka-zar vs. Klaw

    Prizes will be distributed soon.
  • Woohoo! Congrats @Winners! Thanks for the contest @ZendikarIncarnate!
  • Congrats to ALL the winners!
