A Set of Four
My Intro
---
I know what you're thinking, who is this guy? And why is he setting us a challenge? Well, I'm Sam, on here I'm 32bitBandit, that's also my twitter, YouTube and Twitch handles. I design tabletop roleplaying games, I alter and design my own playing card games, I'm a GM as well as a DM (that's DnD 3.5 and Pathfinder for those of you who care
, I design and build MtG decks for people both for casual and competitive play, I draw, write, study everything I can to improve my ability to design, have a degree in Drama and English Literature, play the piano, studying French, and many more things, but I'm sure that's enough to give you a rough picture of me.
So, why am I setting a challenge? Because I want to see who is out there! Designing is so often just a personal thing, people get consumed with need their own creation to be noticed over any other, the modern world tells us that to exist we must be present at all times online and be noticed. Well, design isn't a one person job, the best designs are collaborative, and I want to find people who both want to improve their own skills at designing, and to also help others. I don't accept saying everything is amazing when it isn't, but I won't stand for anyone being cruel either. Honesty and helpful advice, let us help each other grow, and lets get a few of us on the team over at WotC hey!
The Challenge!
---
So I would like you to design four cards, one common, one uncommon, one rare, and one mythic. The most important part of the challenge is to make them all feel part of the same set. This can be done in whatever way you see fit, but here are a few examples to get your mind ticking;
- They share a keyword ability, so four cards build around investigate for example might include 2 with the investigate ability, one with detain, and one that interacts with clue artifacts.
- They share a creature type. Four elf themed cards. Three humans and a wagon. Two Zombies and two necromancers. A Shaman and three elementals. You get the drift.
- They share a theme. A fan of Bram Stokers Dracula? Then why not create a vampire that transforms into a wolf, a woman who temps and kills opponents creatures, an old doctor, and a fighter real estate agent! Or perhaps you like ancient Egypt? Then a tomb raider, a mummy, a pharaoh, and a chariot. Anything you enjoy that you can base a theme around.
So they are the three base connections, but use whatever suits you. So, the prizes... I don't want to give out favorites and follows because they 'won' them, everyone who enters will get follows and favourites when deserved, and I'll help and talk to everyone who enters, and we'll have some fun with it! But to keep it in the spirit of a competition I will have my 'Set of the Week!', which will be the best set within the challenge, the same set can stay up for multiple weeks until a better set comes along to beat it. The idea is to keep improving your entry, and we'll get some real gold out of it!
I look forward to seeing what you come up with! The first Set of the Week will be decided on the 11th, and then every Saturday thereafter.
Happy Smithing.

After reading your first paragraph, I've surmised that you're a cool guy.
Also, I may be designing a card/board game in the future (mostly to please a little brother of mine). If I ever get anything concrete, could I bounce ideas off of you to get your opinion?
While I'm here, I'll submit four:
They come from this set: http://mtgcardsmith.com/user/Faiths_Guide/sets/10133
(Note: Amethyst Mountain should produce colorless {c} instead of generic.)
I'd be more than happy to talk ideas with you and help you bounce ideas around. Even just the act of talking about an idea helps it to grow, I'll be more than happy to help.
Anticipate possible future PMs on the subject. Thanks!

I really like the cards you've chosen and I've had a look through your Lithonian set. I've commented on the cards individually so it's easier to talk about them.
@Blazin_Biscuit
Nice to have you on board and I look forward to seeing what you come up with.
You accidentally said "defiantly" instead of "definitely" above.
@Blazin_Biscuit - What @Faiths_Guide said!
Thanks for the cards, I've commented on the cards individually and made a couple for you to check out as well (the links are in the comments)!
And a reminder to everyone, this is very much a group thing as it is individual, so check each others out, leave comments, help each other out, favourite the ones you like. We'll all make better cards working together.

The cards document the expeditions and magics of the Archive, a loose collection of scholars and researchers lead by Aeldra, a spirit of knowledge made manifest. A loose theme within the group is the manipulation of knowledge; its collection, distribution, and propagation.
You're a cool dude, @32bitBandit.
...yup, that's all I came for.

Update on Firestorm Giant and have to redo my mythic entry....
A lovely set, and a theme which is good fun as well. I've made a couple of cards for you to have a look at, see what you think. As you have a theme running through the set, I feel that you could have a keyword running through the set alongside it. Often keywords are used when they don't need to be, but in this case I think it would really focus the theme.

Well thank you, and glad to have you on board. Hopefully we'll get to see some cards from you? Or in not, then check out everyone else and get involved. I look forward to seeing what you bring to the table.

Loving the feel of them, as normal I've left comments on the cards themselves so it's easier to talk about them individually. A couple of things to think about; you have a real anger and fury running through these cards, and a darkness with them as well. I'd really want to run with that, when building up the set keep in mind the overall theme you want, so add some more undying or unearth mechanics in it for example, make the giants in your world feel like they are from hell, or part demon, make them terrifying.
Also, if you look to expand the set, don't feel that everything that is part of that 'tribe' has to be a fire giant, as this does make low mana cards hard to make and justify. Also, always keep in mind that the cards around those at the core help to create the world they inhabit. So just things to keep in mind when expending it out. Here are a few cards I've come up with that could fit into that sort of set, see what you think, just things to think about.

My mythic entry
Updated. How does he look now?
Commented on it, much better!

I love designing and building up decks for people, and doing this lets me keep doing it, so any help is awesome.
Oh, and keep up the great work on the cards by the way. There is no limit to the number of sets you can send in, so if you come up with another idea you'd like people to go over with you, send them in! Anyone I haven't got round to getting back to you, I will get there I promise.
Stay awesome everyone.
