Rules Questions

edited August 2016 in Off-topic Chat
Hello all, I have two rules questions that have been bugging me for a while:

1): Imagine I just played the card Racecourse Fury and chose to enchant one of my opponent's lands with it.

Would I be able to tap it in response to my opponent trying to tap the land for mana because I control the enchantment?

2): Here is my idea for a combo:
T1: Play Forest, cast Arbor Elf, Llanowar Elves, Elvish Mystic, Birds of Paradise, or any 1cmc creature that can tap for 1 mana.
T2: Play Forest, cast Eldritch Evolution, saccing the 1cmc mana dork.

I tutor for Dualcaster Mage with Eldritch Evolution still on the stack.

With Eldritch Evolution still on the stack, Dualcaster Mage copies Eldritch Evolution with the knowledge of it saccing the 1cmc mana dork still imprinted on it. WIth that, you can search your library for another Dualcaster Mage and repeat the process. After you run out of Dualcaster Mages in your deck, search for clone-like creature with 3cmc and keep on repeating. Once you have exhaused your deck with cards to tutor, you fetch Hellraiser Goblin, which gives your twerps haste, allowing for you to swing for 10 minimum.

I know this combo can't possibly exist because nobody else has noticed and abused it, but why does it not work?

Thanks all who reply!

  • 1. You cannot, because once you enchant an opponent's permanent, that opponent gains control of the enchantment.
    2. That I'm not sure...

    1) Racecourse Fury
    Enchant land
Enchanted land has "Tap: Target creature gains haste until end of turn."

You don't control the land, so you can't tap it for anything
  • "You can’t choose to pay any additional costs for the copy. However, effects based on any additional or alternative costs paid for the targeted spell are copied as though those same costs were paid for the copy."
Because the cost was already paid, I think yes. But I'm not sure if it's still on the stack. If it is, then yes.
  • No. Your opponent doesn't "gain control the enchantment." There are several reasons it doesn't work but that's not one. First, the ability is granted to the land and you don't control the land so can't tap it. Second, if it's tapped for mana or for an ability, it's already tapped and can't be tapped for some other ability in response. Third, a mana ability doesn't use the stack and has already resolved before anyone can respond. Why the combo doesn't work: you can't be resolving the Evolution to tutor for something and it still be on the stack when the enters-the-battlefield ability of that thing triggers. You have to complete the whole spell, including exiling the Evolution, then deal with what comes next. You've got a 2/2 Dualcaster with nothing to copy and no other abilities. If you could cast the Dualcaster separately that would work but that's a six mana combo. Kiki-Jiki can go off for 5.
  • @Bibilio2, so would that mean the same thing if I got Dualcaster Mage off of Collected Company?
  • Yes. The Collected Company will finish resolving and be in your graveyard before you can put Dualcaster's trigger on the stack.
