The Contest Challenge

I want to hold a contest where the rewards for winning will be hard copies of the winning cards (and perhaps a few others). printerstudio.com allows you to make a set of 18 unique cards that are 63mm x 88mm which are the exact dimensions of magic cards. I would be willing to take the winning cards and have them made into the real thing and send them out to the winners. In order to get images large enough for blur-free printing, the cards will probably be remade manually to the exact specifications of the cards made in Cardsmith using larger versions of the templates and if necessary, smaller text and manual formatting to fit more text. We just need to come up with a contest that would be deserving of such a prize.

This is entirely not for profit and is totally unrelated to MTG, WoTC and any of the artists whose art might be used in any of the cards. It may be necessary to secure permission from certain artists to print their work but since there is no money involved I doubt it will be necessary. MTG Cardsmith is also not involved in this and if they or anyone else whose content is being used for this ask me not to do this for any reason, I will comply. Winner would also have to be willing to share some way of getting them their card, I would assume by mail. Since I will be paying for postage, I'm limiting the winners to the US and Canada.

That being said, I am open to suggestions. The person to come up with the best suggestion will get 1 copy of 1 card or their choice should the contest finish properly.

So any card we make, you'll try and create a hard copy of it? Nice. What would you like for suggestions?
  • No, first we need to come up with a contest that is worthy of printing real copies of cards as rewards.
  • Best of the best. Tournament style eliminations where cards are voted on for points. Most points wins and moves on to the next round.

You're looking for a contest format?
    May I suggest classic heal/hurt?
    The rules are simple:
First, each user may submit up to 2 of their cards to enter the contest up to a set deadline (one or two weeks?).
Then the actual voting starts: Once every 24 hours, each user may name one card to heal and one to hurt. Each heal a card recieves counts a +1 vote, each hurt as -1. The ones with the most votes when the voting time is up (one or two weeks?) are the winners.
    - A valid vote has to contain both, a heal and a hurt.
    - You may not heal any of your own cards.
    - Don't use alt-accounts as voting strawmen. You're better than that.

    Example for a voting post:

    heal: Dramatic Burglar
    hurt: Firixi, Fury Within

    Done, easy as that.

Would that work for your purposes?
  • While this might seem like a great idea (and it is) there are a few flaws with this. First thing is, people like their anonymity here. Very few people will give out their information to a stranger over the internet. I'm not saying it won't happen, it's just gonna have resistance... that's going to equal fewer entries. Second, there are a lot of kids on this site. I'm talking 7th graders who sit in computer class at school and make cards, and other kids who just love magic and making cards. Asking underage kids for their personal contact information might be... I don't know... complicated. Even for the best of intentions, probably not a good idea. Then there is the stuff you mentioned about art and legality and all that. MTG Cardsmith might not be allowed to host something like that, because then they become attached to it, merely from allowing it to happen on their site.

I do love the idea of a bracket style contest. I think it would be a LOT of fun! That's something we definitely should do!!

    Also, there is this

If your still taking suggestions for this contest I would suggest a alter art contest. Mainly because if i get a card i would at least like to use it in a casual match if anything where a made up card would kind of just sit around. I just think it would be a interesting idea and simple to do just the cards with the most upvotes.
  • Some decent ideas so far. As for some of the issues brought up, a stipulation to enter the contest would be your willingness and ability to be sent a card as a reward. This may limit the entrants but that is how it would have to be. For expansion's comment, the idea is more that the card is a trophy more than something to play with. Regardless of what the contest ends up being, one of the winning criteria will be balance so it probably wouldn't be too hard to have a friend let you play it in a casual game.
  • I'd be up for that!
  • I'm not in for the reward - if I end up winning, please let the second best have the prize. I'm just here for the fun of it :D Anyway, here's my card, Guardian of Innistrad.

  • This isn't the actual contest! This is trying to figure out what the contest should be.

The one thing I am kind of worried about is the potential for blurry images. The images made by Cardsmith and Magic Set Editor are certainly large enough at 72dpi 375px x 523px but the printer suggests images that are roughly 300dpi. I'm looking into it.
  • Oh ok, sorry - there's a different card that I would like to enter anyway, so I'll post it when the contest begins. :)

    Sometimes the rules are superfluous.
