Cardsmith Compliation Competition - (You may sign up for round 4.)

Intro

I'm sorry, it's midnight and I want to sleep but I got this awesome idea (Think about it - Nerdy kids taking time off sleep to make Magic cards?). Anyways, considering how good this idea sounds, I need to make an intro (I'll only use it if this idea gets out in the first place.)

Dark was the night, as the legendary smith set to his project. Time would be taken off, his family would miss him, he would lose sleep, though the results would shock the world. And today, it has begun the largest projects of all time, now known as the _____________ (I need to think of a better name).

Contest

The idea is, we'll have cardsmiths form into teams of I'd say 3-4. I haven't decided on exactly what the contest will be on, but I want it to be related to a set.

Team ideas:

-Random (Pros=More Bonding) (Cons=Less balanced Teams)
-Chosen by me (Pros and Cons opposite of Random.)
-Team Captains pick people (Pros=More Balance, More fun.) (Cons=Less Bonding and people feel left out.)
-People just choose themselves (Pros=A lot of fun.) (Cons=Way less bonding.)

Alternatively, we can have team captains choose 1 person each and the rest will be randomly decided.

Idea #1: They would work together to complete a set, which will probably just be a normal 27 card set based on a certain mechanic, creature type, or idea. The set will contain:

-3 White
-3 Blue
-3 Black
-3 Red
-3 Green
-1 Colorless
-2 Multicolored
-1 Legendary Mythic of your choice
-1 Legendary Rare of your choice
- Another Mythic of your choice
-Another Planeswalker of your choice
-5 Lands

Idea #2: The most basic. Make any set based one thing, like a tribe, a battle, color, a mechanic, a card, or even just a story.

Other ideas coming later.

The other rules would be:

-All new cards
-Must have at least 5 cards from each smith
-2 Weeks due date
-Prize is Trophy... And others depending.

Special thanks to the following people: @Corwinnn for being a cool mod, @Tomigon for being a cool guy, @FaithsGuide for being ut inspiration, and @DragonFaceEater for being the man who hosts half the challenges here (@Monty too).

Extreme special thanks to @Mila, who gave me this idea (subcauntiously). She gave me the idea when around a month ago she said something like "I like your card making style." This gave me an idea that what if people could "bond together" and learn more by working together. Like that, you might be able to learn someone else's style.

Thank you, and please give me your thoughts.

Additional: If I was rich, this would be a "See Prizes" contest.

  • @Beeswax, @MrRansom, @Faiths_Guide, @Tomigon, @Corwinnn:

I know you guys are the most famous (sorry animist), and you guys probably want to stay out of this, but I'd like you guys to help, maybe be team captains, so you can got each the newbies. I see you guys a lot, except you rarely make new cards, but I really like you guys to help me with this.
  • Thanks for mentioning me! I'm feel so honored. I'll take a look after I announce the result of the challenge I'm hosting.
  • edited September 2016
I could be interested, I've been looking for trying a group challenge for a while, but will be much less available starting October, so it strongly depends when it starts and ends.

    Now, on questions:

    Whose Participating?
    - - - I guess I am :)

Shall we have self decided teams after all people have signed up?
    - - - I think it's a good idea, but random is fun too I suppose ^^

Shall we have teams be chosen by team captain?
    - - - I suppose this could be ok, but beware as the last picks can often feel outcast. I recommand asking people if they have specific people they want to team with, then distributing the participants in private with the team captain before annoucing them.

    Shall we have multiple rounds?
    - - - I'd say no. We aren't that big of a community and not everyone is interested in every contest. Team challenges are especially difficult to set up, and so are complete set challenges, so let's focus on making the first step work! Then, if it's a huge success, the question of additional rounds will come in its own time.

After each round, should teams be chosen again and switched with different number of team members?
    - - - If other rounds happen, I sure hope we'll mix teams up! ^^ As the Great Designer Search #2 showed, it can be very fun to exchange designs and work on other people ideas to see what we could have done different for instance ^^

How many people should be in each team?
    - - - I'd say four to five smiths. A small number will allow more teams so more design, and everyone's idea will have more impact inside a group (and that also makes for less arguments inside each group). But people also tend to disappear for personal reasons from time to time so allowing 3-persons teams is risky since it could end up as a 2- or even 1-person team which is much less fun :/

Since I'm not a loner and I want to join to, can I join and have the winner be voted (because entries will be few)?
    - - - That sounds fun ^^ Each team can rank the other teams which will give a set amount of points according to ranks, and we'll see which team has the most point after everyone has voted?

Should I have all cards made in 1 set?
    - - - Don't you need a premium account to do that? If you could, yes I think it could be really fun, but maybe do a separate set for each team, it will be easier to understand the point of each design.

Should all the cards just be posted separately (I wouldn't suggest that)?
    - - - I would't recommand that either. On my opinion, each team should work on a separate discussion where we can iterate on each card and propose a ton of different cards before chosing the ones we'll present for the set. Then, post here the final list for the set ^^

Should we have a premium member in each team so all cards they decide on will be put in that set (They could be team captains, but I don't think there are enough premium memebers)?
    - - - This would be great be it completely depends on Premium members participation to this contest ^^

Should I get a good hearted person like @Corwinnn to make a set for each team?
Can the winner be chosen by popular vote?
    - - - Maybe if this gets to be done we'll bother Corwinnn with it? ^^ For the set thing, let's wait to see if this is popular or not before making big plans ^^ For the winner, I like the idea of popular votes, with each team also having to vote for another team ^^

    Should we name our teams?
    - - - Of course! =D

Most importantly, what should the contest exactly be on? Note that each one will be different.
    - - - I propose to take model on the Great Designer Search: each team must come with the idea of a world (including name, logline, and little description both on flavour and mechanics for this world, the cards being a glimpse at the potential of this world.)
  • Whose Participating?
    Whoever wants to, I guess.

Shall we have self decided teams after all people have signed up?
Perhaps I'm biased in this regard, (especially considering I was always the last kid picked for dodgeball) but randomization could be interesting. It'd likely help everyone develop teamwork and communication skills, and learn how to come to a consensus.

Shall we have teams be chosen by team captain?
I suppose my answer is the same as to the above one.

    Shall we have multiple rounds?
Let's see if we can even get through one, first.

After each round, should teams be chosen again and switched with different number of team members?
Yeah, mixing it up will keep things fresh.

How many people should be in each team?
Depends how many people join. I'm thinking however it most even divides to something like four or five groups, or up to eight groups if there's a lot of participants.

Since I'm not a loner and I want to join to, can I join and have the winner be voted (because entries will be few)?
    Voting sounds good.

Should I have all cards made in 1 set?
That'll require remaking, unless we have premium participants, so I'm not sure.

Should all the cards just be posted separately (I wouldn't suggest that)?
God forbid we have a page of pictures and blue, nonsensical lines.

Should we have a premium member in each team so all cards they decide on will be put in that set (They could be team captains, but I don't think there are enough premium memebers)?
This would probably be ideal for efficiency, though, once again, it depends how many participants we actually get.

Should I get a good hearted person like @Corwinnn to make a set for each team?
Perhaps as a last resort. We don't wanna make him work too hard.

Can the winner be chosen by popular vote?
    Sure.

    Should we name our teams?
    Team Aristocratic Waffle away!

Most importantly, what should the contest exactly be on? Note that each one will be different.
I'd suggest something along the lines of say, plane or story creation, and cards that give just a bit of insight into this story.
  • Question 1: Im participating!

Question 2: I dont think self decided teams would be good cause at least one person wont get a team even though they signed up.

Question 3: I think team captains might be good, but another way to do it is find a way to do it randomly.

Question 4: Nah. I think it would be a pain to restart the thing multiple times.

Question 5: If we do have multiple rounds, then we should switch up teams so there can be a different variety entries than last time.

Question 6: I think probably max 5 smiths per team. And probably no less than three.

Question 7: Yeah i think thats a good idea. Like each group decides on another group BESIDES their own and vote on that group.

Question 8: Dont really know or have an opinion on that.

    Question 9: Same as above.

Question 10: No cause what if there is too little or too many premium members.

    Question 11: Nah.

    Question 12: Yes.

    Question 13: HEK YEAH.

Question 14: I think that should be your decision.
  • There should also be a one week event before the challenge to get ready. ( decide the teams. etc. )
  • Wow! 5 comments in 8 hours! This is gonna be successful!
  • Hopefully cause im already really pumped.
  • you should also have a deadline before sign ups end
  • I'll see about that
  • Lol if I was rich, this would be a "See Prizes" contest.
  • I think the 2 biggest questions are how the teams work and what the contest is on.

  • Actually, mainly just the teams
  • I think team captains is the best choice.
  • Like your a team captain and maybe some other popular people in the comunity that join? (Im sure there will be a few.)
  • Team ideas:

-Random (Pros=More Bonding) (Cons=Less balanced Teams)
-Chosen by me (Pros and Cons opposite of Random.)
-Team Captains pick people (Pros=More Balance, More fun.) (Cons=Less Bonding and people feel left out.)
-People just choose themselves (Pros=A lot of fun.) (Cons=Way less bonding.)

Alternatively, we can have team captains choose 1 person each and the rest will be randomly decided.
  • i like the alternate a lot actually!
  • edited September 2016
@TrippleBoggey3 If the team captains pick people in a private conversation, people won't feel left out as they won't know if they were picked first or last ;)
  • ooooooo I like that idea @ningyounk
  • edited September 2016
If we do team captains, possible captains would be:

    @Corwinnn, @Tomigon, @TrippleBoggey3 (Sorry, I wanna be captain.) @Beeswax, @MrRansom, @Ningyounk, @Faiths_Guide and @Mila for giving me this idea.
  • edited September 2016
    But many of the people above are rarely seen, so we might do @Monty, @DragonFaceEater, @Latinas, @RohanDragoon, @Lujikul, @TheEverspikesWarlord, @Yururu, @Biblio2, @KrazyKobold98, KLTMTG29, Connor2001, @DingusXeon, @DankSoulsRager @Seaspray4tf3, @Flatfish, @OneBigBlueSky, @Feyamius

I'm just naming all the active people. An I missing anyone?

Other than that, we'll have all the newbies make up the rest.
  • @TrippleBoggey3 That's me. Present. Now what are we doing again? (p.s. That last part was for comic relief. I have a vague idea what we're doing, so no need to explain.)
  • Whose Participating?
Sure, why not, sounds fun, I'm in.

Shall we have self decided teams after all people have signed up?
After everyone is signed up. easier to pick teams that way

Shall we have teams be chosen by team captain?
    I'm cool with team captains

    Shall we have multiple rounds?
...? Only if needed making a collaborative set could prove to be a lengthy endeavor.

After each round, should teams be chosen again and switched with different number of team members?
    see above

How many people should be in each team?
3 on the low end no more than 5

Since I'm not a loner and I want to join to, can I join and have the winner be voted (because entries will be few)?
I see no problem with that.

Should I have all cards made in 1 set?
It would be nice to see everything without jumping from profile to profile, but links to card creator would need to be posted too.

Should all the cards just be posted separately (I wouldn't suggest that)?
I agree, things will get lost that way

Should we have a premium member in each team so all cards they decide on will be put in that set (They could be team captains, but I don't think there are enough premium memebers)?
    If it works, sure.

Should I get a good hearted person like @Corwinnn to make a set for each team?
Only if they volunteer for that enormous task.

Can the winner be chosen by popular vote?
    yes

    Should we name our teams?
    YES!

Most importantly, what should the contest exactly be on? Note that each one will be different. Theme (i.e. Vikings, Aztecs, or Arabian Nights sequel)
  • @TrippleBoggey3 - I'm at work, so I just have enough time to glance at things... I'll check this out later tonight
