What says 'Egyptian mythology' more than the legendary Sphinx? http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/amonkhet-high-sphinx At first glance, this card is underwhelming. But upon further examination you'll notice that this card has the capacity to completely lock down a game by itself. In a control shell, if an opponent can't answer it or have a consistent source of card draw, he or she will not be able to draw cards at all. It requires some setup but rewards you greatly for playing control. I hope the three color cost and drawback effect prevent it from being overpowered. Enjoy!
All right so it's a world ruled by gods and Nicol Bolas, which means Nicol Bolas is probably one of the gods, which means ... THE LEGENDS ELDER DRAGONS ARE BACK!
(I know it's a reprint, but it fits perfectly into my version of the story)
In my version of the story, Nicol Bolas came to Amonkhet and forced the 5 gods into hiding. He then told the people of Amonkhet that he was a more powerful god, and therefore began to rule the plane.
I highly doubt that bolas would ever have a son in any capacity considering he's pretty much immortal (also kind of a tyrant) and all, but that aside I just wanted to design a card with this kind of effect.
I made an Egyptian God but it's obviously not a valid entry for the contest, consider it s a joke XD
I wanted to use Devotion because I think this mechanic is really great and Gods should always be tied by the Devotion mechanic when possible on my opinion. But I wanted my Egyptian Gods to feel different mechanically from the Theros Gods, so I put a veto on "This is not a creature unless your devotion is N or more". Also, I felt it wasn't necessary to keep the Enchantment subtype because it was kind of a package with the above mechanic, but I kept the Enchantment-Creature card template because it felt important that the Gods were imediatly recognizable visually.
This led me to the "CARDNAME costs M less for each M in the mana cost of permanents you control" which was my little twist to the devotion mechanic ^^ Obviously, this implied a crazy amount of coloured mana in the mana cost, so I had to use photoshop. I'm happy with the result visually, it's silly but you immediatly get the point x)
For the rest of the card, Indestructible felt important to me because it ties the Gods mechanically pretty well, I balanced the stats for a 5-mana God, and I've decided each ability on my Egyptian Gods would be a creature-related triggered ability that is super powerful. For instance, the Blue God can trigger when a creature becomes the target of a spell or ability, while the Red God can trigger when a creature you control deals combat damage to an opponent.
On flavour, I think it is super important to NOT use the actual real-life name of the gods (just like Heliod is only a reference to Zeus, not Zeus himself), but this is obviously a reference to Anubis, the egyptian god, keeper of the necropolis ^^
I thought it was associated with helios the titan of the sun? Although it could be a representation of both him and zeus. You're right though, they probably won't use their actual names, I just wanted an analogue the reflected what they could be like, without knowing what they will be.
Does anyone think cats are going to be in Amonkhet? I've been theorizing and I'm pretty sure, based on how much Egyptians honored cats back in the day, that there's going to be at least one.
Here is a Tyrannous planeswalker based off Anubis, (who basically pulls cards from places and puts them in your graveyard for you to farm from, so its kinda mummifying.) And a few cards to go along with him.

(Everyone seems pre-occupied with trials... ) I wanted to represent, using Pyrexian mana, a cost to life/mana (As Egyptian culture revolves around a cycle of life and death.)

It would be interesting if they made planeswalker masterpieces. That's something I want to see at some point.
More cards to come... I hope
