Daria, Plane of the Unknown Tales

Hey guys! This is a custom set that I am working on called Tales of the Unknown. Here is the set: http://mtgcardsmith.com/user/TheFriendlyGeek/sets/15678

Plane: Daria
Genre: Fairy Tale (This is a Llorwyn inspired set but not a spinoff and it is unique.)
Creature types: There are multiple, but in this tribal themed set, these are the ones that stand out:

Green Black - Druids

Blue Green - Fairies

Red Blue - Drakes

White Red - Unicorns

Black White - ???

As you can see, Black White is not been figured out yet.

What is your job? First off, it would be wonderful if I could have suggestions on the Black White creature type and any other suggestions. Secondly, I would like ideas to be posted and possible card ideas. I am not using snow or untap symbols. I might use ideas or totally recreate cards of yours but only if you allow me to.

Thanks!

  • Black white would probably be your general humans. They represent very human values, such as order and ultimate power, society and anarchy, the many and the few.
  • @Lujikul Daria is not filled with any humans except for ones that were born from nature, Jeri for example http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/jeri-blossoms-mystique?list=set&set=15678
  • Quick question: What are druids? You mentioned there weren't humans, so are druids elves?

A possible suggestion for Black/White could be Witches (either Shamans or Wizards, in creature types).
  • @ShadowKnight1224 druids are beings that are one with nature. Some can be elves like in my set but there is not elf tribal and thanks I might use witches and wizards.
  • No problem! I was just mentioning it because druids are generally a "class", rather than a "race". Likewise with witches (also please note that witch is not actually valid type, which is why I suggested shaman or wizard, the two types that most approximate the fairytale version of witches).
  • Okay, @ShadowKnight1224 I will make black and white into wizards thanks
  • No worries! What else can we help you with? :)

    @ShadowKnight1224 umm, ideas for mechanics?
  • I've got Discovery and Beauty

Oh, sure. Let's start with the evergreen keywords:

My recommendation for BG Druids is Deathtouch, Reach, Hexproof and Lifelink.
For UG faeries, Flying, Flash, Hexproof and Prowess.
For UR drakes, Flying, Prowess, Haste and Fight.
For WR unicorns, Trample, Vigilance, First/Double Strike and Haste.
And for WB wizards, Scry, Menace, Lifelink and Indestructible.

So the way this works is that druids are wise and command the powers of nature (reach), wielding both life and death (deathtouch and lifelink) and easily shrug magic off (hexproof) due to their ancient lore. Faeries fly, are quick and agile (flash and prowess) and supernaturally slippery, to the point where they can easily weasel their way out of magic (hexproof). Drakes also fly and are quick and agile (prowess and haste), but more "scrappy" than faeries (fight).

Unicorns are great beasts (trample) that are quick to defend their territory (vigilance) and do so with frightening swiftness (first/double strike and haste). And finally, wizards are masters of magics both light and dark (lifelink and indestructible), and their powers make them frightening to outsiders (menace). Much like druids, their ancient lore gives them an edge, though in the wizards' case, it's towards the future (scry).

Now, for the non-evergreen mechanics, some more ideas:

BG Druids: Unearth, Convoke, Dredge, Retrace.
UG Faeries: Soulbond, Skulk, Escalate, Rebound.
UR Drakes: Replicate, Overload, Evoke, Dash.
WR Unicorns: Provoke, Exalted, Miracle, Bestow.
WB Wizards: Delve, Undying, Extort, Outlast.

For the druids, I picked abilities that interacted with the graveyard and creatures. For faeries, evasion, partnership and ways to get more bang for your buck out of spells. For drakes, I went for "fast" and "bigger and better". For unicorns, I went for "honourable warrior" tropes and "holy magic". For the wizards, some forbidden lore and some ways to stay alive forever.

    Hope it helps!
  • W/B? My favorite, White / Black aristocrats!
  • A good fairy tale setting should have Witches.
  • @ShadowKnight1224 that was extremely helpful. I am probably going to keep those evergreen keywords and use them in the cards in their place but the non-evergreen keywords I am not going to use. I'm replacing those with a custom mechanic. Each tribe has their own mechanic.

Druids are realizing that there is so much knowledge and lore to discover with the keyword Discover

Faeries are gorgeus creatures and use their beauty as a strong point in battle with the keyword Beauty

Drakes are swift and when they fight, it is usually in a chunk of damage. I am probably going to create something like Overload because that would work on buffing either one drake or the whole team.

Unicorns are majestic and holy and want to protect their rightful title with the keyword Majesty.

W/B I have still not fully decided on. Wizards just seems weird in that slot. I was thinking maybe Dreams?
  • Discover: where X is the number of spells with different names you have cast this turn; equal to the number of spells with different names you have cast this turn.

Beauty: (This creature cannot be blocked by creatures that share a creature type with it.)

  • Very interesting mechanics! What I recommended was to make WB the "witches" tribe in flavour, but use both the shaman and the wizard classes to represent them White-aligned witches are more like wizards, while black-aligned witches are more like shamans. Or viceversa! The reason I recommended this is because it gives you a certain flexibility when it comes to mechanics.

For example, a possible custom mechanic for witches can be "Witchcraft: When you cast a non-creature spell, this creature gets [ability] until end of turn." It's like Prowess, but instead of giving them a stat boost, it allows them to tap into their power. And what's cool about it is that [ability] can be anything, from a keyword to something specific to that card.
  • I do like that @ShadowKnight1224 but I prefer to use Dreams and Nightmares there. I like your mechanic Witchcraft and it is flavorful but witches I just don't think are going to fit.
  • Well, for nightmares, you do have the Nightmare creature type. However, for dreams the closest thing you have is the Illusion type, which is primarily blue. No problem, glad it could help!
  • @ShadowKnight1224 Dreams are going to have a new creature type: Dream

Well, in that case, my suggested evergreen keywords still apply. Both dreams and nightmares can have Scry, as they're associated with portents of the future. Nightmares can have Menace (because they're frightening), and both can also have Indestructible, given that they are not truly corporeal. If you go with the angle that they're both draining to have, Lifelink works for both as well.
  • @ShadowKnight1224 In place of menace I am bringing back Fear. It is more flavorful.
  • That's your prerogative, of course, but I do think you should be made aware of why Fear was retired: Menace does the same job, is just as flavourful, and isn't hit or miss like Fear or Intimidate (because unlike Fear or Intimidate, it doesn't "turn off" when your opponent plays a certain colour or an artefact deck).
  • @ShadowKnight1224 I am going to stick with fear but with dreams and nightmares, I'll make something to do with manipulating colors and creature types like dreams and nightmares do.
  • That's a good workaround; the main issue with Fear and Intimidate was that it could easily just do nothing at all, so if you can get a dream/nightmare deck to reliably manipulate colours (manipulating creature types won't really work, since "artefact" is not a creature type), you should be mostly okay. Artefacts will cause the deck problems, but you can give them some artefact destruction or exile to deal with them.
  • If I may,

If you haven't yet decided on your B/W, you could use Spirits, and witches could be thrown into the mix, yet I can really see Spirits as Black and White. However if you do end of using witches I would include a Russian fairytale character known as Baba Yaga as a Legendary Creature. Here read up on her if you don'y know what she is yet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_Yaga

Have Fun, and if you need any more help/ideas just ask!

    -Mother Russia
  • @Therussian58 I have decided on dreams and nightmares but thanks for the input.
  • Alright, no problem, but honestly do try Baba Yaga somewhere, she is an interesting character with a lot of lore potential.
  • @Therussian58 sorry but Baba Yaga is not in the type of theme, setting or lore for my set. My set is more of a fantasy fairytale not russian.
