Welcome, laddys and gents, to CBC #3, where on request of @Beeswax , one of the winners of CBC #2, we take another look at Lorwyn. CBC focuses on making cards that are balance and flavorful for the set, using mechanics designed for the set or personal creativity. Cards are judged on the criteria of flavor, how well the card fits the plane and story, and mechanics, how well the card flows and works. Six submissions will be chosen for a non-prize pool called The Best of Set, and from there, the top 3 cards and an honorable mention will be chosen.

Now, into the Lore:

Set 1: Lorwyn Revisited

Deep across the multiverse, Lorwyn lies, a normal plane, with kithkin, elves, boggarts and giants all together, in absolute harmony. Oona, Tyrannical Ruler of the Fae, has long since been killed, and the faeries now keep themselves to themselves. But something isn't quite right: Shadowmoor hasn't come yet. Every three centuries, the plane shifts to another parallel world, of infinite darkness. But it hasn't happened, for some unknown reason.

The Gatewatch are called. They don't all, however, land on Lorwyn: Jace and Gideon somehow end up on a dark world, and beat back a horde of bloodthirsty giants, when a series of elves rescue them. Something, something unknown, has caused the two worlds to split: Shadowmoor and Lorwyn are now different worlds.

Set 2: Planar Revolution

Shadowmoor and Lorwyn are, each not being whole planes, folding up on themselves. The edges of the worlds are each dissapearing, The Gatewatch on LOrwyn realise they must find out who has caused this, and make them reverse it. Eventually, they find the culprit, and she/he/it explains to them how it happened.

Using their combined magic, they manage to make Lorwyn absorb Shadowmoor's mana. Shadowmoor disappears, and the cycle is reverted. Lorwyn is back to normal, and the Gatewatch , along with Jace and Gideon, return to Ravnica.

And the mechanics:

Two-Faced (You may have this creature enter the battlefield transformed under an opponent's control.) By me. For both Represents the shift of Lorwyn to Shadowmoor.

Vibrant (Whenever you cast a spell, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature for each color that spell shares with this creature.) For Shadowmoor, by me (I think...).

Amplify N (As this creature enters the battlefield, put N +1/+1 counters on it for each card you reveal in your hand that shares a creature type with it.) From Legions. Thanks to @Faiths_Guide for wording help, and, please note that the amplified creature type is always the same as the creature's creature type.

Now, what people care about: Prizes!
1st Place: 4 Favorites, 2 Card Renders, and the ability to choose the focus of the next CBC.

Mechanically driven cards! I used the Two-Faced mechanic for all of them, since I liked it so much. The goal of each two-faced pair was to create two different but similar effects, both of which would be good in the same kind of deck. That means that there's a distinct choice every time you cast it, instead of one deck always wanting the aggro side or the control side. This also means that the two sides tend to have synergy with each other, meaning that drawing (and running) multiples isn't a penalty. Finally, each creature has roughly the same combat stats on both sides (the Merfolk don't, but it's close).

These two fit into an Goblin aggro deck. If you've already vomited your hand onto the board or have allies waiting to strike, the Ambassadors are the better choice, but if you have a lot of gobbos to play or a token maker like Krenko, the Pyromaniacs will serve you better.

    image image
There are more than just fish in the sea: octopi (or tetrapi) are also 'sea people'. Both sides fit into a blue/black control deck with a card advantage focus: by reorganizing the three effects (draw, discard, sacrifice), the Sage and the Sadists can either be a powerful draw engine or a resource denial machine.

    image image
Like the Goblins, these two fit into an aggressive deck, but now it's white weenie instead of Goblin tribal. It has some of the same choices as the Goblins: Mirrorweft is a good way to get a lot of bodies on the field, while Ambassador makes your existing bodies harder to stop.

    image image
Both halves fit into a green ramp deck. Unlike the others, this card is more explicitly a risk/reward thing; are you willing to go for the stronger effect in exchange for giving the opponent a beefy creature?

    Story driven cards!

    image
The original split between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor was Oona's doing, and since she did it the worlds have diverged too much to unify well. Ashiok intervenes and resurrects the Queen of the Faeries, who resumes her rule under the watchful eyes of the Gatewatch.

    image
Grudgingly accepting the necessity of Oona's presence, yet unwilling to trust her, Ajani forced her to swear not to alter the minds of others: she was only to observe. She agreed in turn for a taste of his memories of other planes. (This added white mana to her color identity and changed some of her mechanics. See card.)

    Identicals on separate realms? Perfect.

  • Loving the cards so far @Everyone! Keep it up!
  • I'll be giving constructive criticism on all the cards later today, btw. At this rate, it'll be hard to judge.

(These are just story suggestions made after the cards. Do not take this as the actual story if you don't want to. :P)
  • I'll take upon myself to bump this 'cause it's such a cool project. :)
