Magus of the Will

So a card that came out in commander 2016 was Magus of the Will, the magus form of Yawgmoth's Will. Now, the original spell is an instant costing {2}{b}, that basically says cards in your grave have flashback for their mana cost.

So, what is it about Yawgmoth's Will that makes it so busted? I mean, I'd probably just cast a recovery spell or a reanimate spell for the mana investment it's taking me. So why is it so... excitable?

  • When Yawgmoth's Will came out I had a deck that could win first turn 90% of the time because of it. There's zero mana investment when the spells you play give you net mana. It was from the same set as "free" spells that let you cast them and untap your lands, and Lotus Vale was broken under the then-new set of rules. Dark Ritual, Crop Rotation, Frantic Search, Lion's Eye Diamond, Phyrexian Dreadnought, Fling, Pandemonium. It was very unfair to the other tournament players. Fun while it lasted. Now imagine it in a Legacy Storm deck, where all the spells replace themselves and give free mana as they fill the grave, then Will them all for a second use. The deck's not even dedicated to abusing it, but randomly becomes twice as good.
  • @Biblio3 is right.

It basically says 'If yer playing storm, yer win the game'.

Play a lot of ritual and cantrip effects until you run out of gas. Then play it. Play the ritual effects, get tons of mana, then play all the cantrip effects, to get your hand stacked. Then play out your hand, until you get another Will, and so on and so on, until, pretty soon, you get a Tendrils of Agony/Grapeshot.
