  • Also here's a little mechanic to chew on: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/backstreet-duelist?list=set&set=14909

Weird Right? It ties quite nicely with Will of the Council and Council's Dilemma...thoughts?
  • And here's another mechanic example as well as something to tie into the Queen of Thorns. http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/thornwood-revenant-1

But the question remains...WHO or WHAT is the Council? WHY are the hated by the commonfolk? And WHAT are their goals/determinations? YOU DECIDE

As for the mechanic itself, here's how it works:

Cards with Outcast (i am thinking of changing it to radical) are placed into the radical zone when they enter play. They attack players randomly and basically are on niether side of the conflict, and either are rebels, cultists who just dont give a crap and want to watch the world burn, power players who are just in it for the money, and overall people not wanting to take part in the war.

(Warning: Based on the fact that I'm a college kid majoring in Political Studies and International Relations, the lore may seemed too real and too non-MTG for some. There are several real world candidates that inspired the creation of this card and its lore, and both Velron and Arumia should not be seen as reflections to any real world examples.)

Introducing Velron, the cunning and vile dictator of the city-nation known as Arumia. Located on a continent full of jungles and exotic sceneries, Arumia used to be a prosperous nation with booming economies, a strong army, and a thriving religion (inspired by a planeswalker like Serra) monitoring the morality and effectiveness of the government. The nation, however, gradually faded away into chaos after that planeswalker left. The church became disillusioned and corrupt in the face of this moral bankruptcy. Several decades later a major recession caused by multiple factors plunged the nation into abyss. People began to fled this country for the hope of surviving. This is when Velron comes into the picture. Born from a merchant family that thrived on trading narcotics (Narcotics in this world are made magically of several specific types of plants and animal corpses, which are all abundant in Arumia. It is now semi-legal thanks to the lack of efficiency and control from the government), he inherited his family value of "money and power above all" very well. After inheriting the business for a period of time, Velron noticed that people are feeling resentful towards the merchants that are involved in this dirty business, as they seemed to be the only group unaffected, or even benefited, by the depression. Realizing that his own business could be at stake, he made the bold move of running for President. By proposing a populist motto of reviving Arumia's economy and to "leash the drug dealers", he successfully took the seat.

After his ascension, he proposed his major economic plan: to nationalize and 'regulate' drug trade and use the remaining economic and military might to coerce other nation around for unfair economic deals, while domestically resort to protectionism. The plan seems to be working for the time being, but soon intellectuals are beginning to question his economic policies, and the question that most of the profits seems to be going towards the ruling class instead of actually regrouping the economy. As the voices of questions grew louder, he began to enforce totalitarian methods to silence the intellectuals. More people are now running away from Arumia, and as a result he established a paramilitary institution called "National Integrity Agency" (NIA) and starts to hunt down dissidents outside Arumia, and bring them to public show trials. At the same time, NIA is also responsible for propaganda and promoting its international image. One of the most important achievement of NIA is that they have successfully re-erected the church's authority over the populace by essentially making it their puppet and channel enough funds to the church, and partly appeased the people of Arumia.

So far everything seems to be doing well for President Velron. As his first term is approaching to an end, he is mostly confident that his tactics may won him a second term. But what next? He is considering amending the constitution to give him some more terms, or permanent benefit and power after retirement, or (even better) makes him an eternal dictator of Arumia. How will things turn out for Velron? How will he deal with a growing rebellion within and outside Arumia?

  • Another entry (not related to the 1st one)

  • Do you want conspiracy flavored cards, or political commanders?
  • I WANT ALL!!!!
  • Tyrannicide is awesome though, @Kinojitsu_Asahi , and I love the flavor you bring to the table with a jungle nation operating as an effective continent-wide drug Cartel. Now, don't get me wrong I love political sciences and completely get your reference, but I do believe that as you mentioned in your post this card focuses quite heavily on real-life events such as title: President for example. Remember, MTG is set in high fantasy, so president will not only feel quite unrealistic yet also remind the player of the real world, taking away fluff potential and making the game seem more out-of-place. That said, I do love the whole Drug cartel/jungle/corrupt government leader thing, and will surely include those aspects in the upcoming challenges, and I think that with some rewording and reorganizing of the card you could make an amazing commander!

    As usual,
    Mother Russia
  • Also, @Beeswax, I have completely fallen in love with your flavor text abilities. This card's flavor is amazing are we getting a backstory? Keep in mind, this challenge is for mythic rare commanders so this is definitely legal for a secondary, yet you could also tweak her to be a primary, by buffing some aspects, and making her a mythic. Again, the flavor just got me, 11/10 amazing flavor! Jeez its sooo good! Keep at it, and thank you for your support of the project.
  • @Therussian58 Thanks for the feedback! I totally agree with what you are saying. But in my defense, I'm gonna say that I designed that card straight from that picture, and it's just so full of flavor my mind automatically composes such political nonsense XD. I will try to make the card name itself and the lore more MTGish if I have the time. Meanwhile, I would also love to hear about any suggestions on the power level and the wording of the card, like is it too wordy, or is it too OP with too many abilities etc.
  • Also if you are familiar that picture is one of Littlefinger from Game of Thrones, but yeah sure, I'll definitely give some advice if possible. Meanwhile, remember, you still have 2 submissions left, so use them wisely and have fun!!
  • Put again, I love the tropics/jungle/drug cartel thing

@Therussian58 informed me that this was fine and asked me to post anyway:
Yirivar is a personal custom set of mine, I'd like to be the only one working on it for the time being.

Yirivar set, so far, can be found here:
    http://mtgcardsmith.com/user/Faiths_Guide/sets/16057

Here are a few you may not have seen yet, I hope to expand the story/lore through flavor:
    image image image

Maybe if I get enough going (and continue to like the story as much as I do now) I'll write a novel on Yirivar.
Like an "EDH - Duel Deck" with a corresponding novel relating the reason for the conflict. :D
  • @TheRussian58

Calypse is a world defined by order, not by law. Its citizens will do whatever it takes to maintain and advance their status in its strict hierarchy. Fiercely meritocratic and ambitious, citizens of Calypse might spend decades luring a hated enemy into a crucial blunder for the sheer joy of seeing them hauled before the High Court.

The ultimate ploy, of course, is Seraphin's Gambit, in which the 'defendant' has simply pretended to be fooled, preparing their countersuit all the while. When executed properly, the erstwhile mastermind is exposed as the only thing worse than a lawbreaker: a fool. And Cabiri does not suffer fools.

  • Well, this is.. interesting.. Burren's Vault I instantly love, and Daulah is absolutely AWESOME! Btw, @Faiths_Guide , can I change some of your cards just for myself later on to be used in the set? If so, thank you so much and I am glad that you are sticking with us on this collab. Also, I will be feeding you some art for Yirivar asap, as I found some SWEET bird art! Again, thanks for the collab, and I hope in time your project and mine can intertwine (well, they already kind of are) and we can help each other out. Also, I NEED the mythic rare commanders! This is going out to everyone in this Challenge so far and whoever wants to join. @Beeswax , @Kinojitsu_Asahi, , @ TrippleBoggey , @Corrowinn , @Gelectrode and many others, MYTHIC COMMANDERS PLZ! But actually guys, thanks so much for the input, this world is already starting to come together!

    As always,

    -Mother Russia
  • Here's a draft oriented card: http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/hightower-noble

Again, related to Highgarden and the Throns...
  • A neater version of Velron that's probably less OP.
    image
  • @Kinojitsu_Asahi Very well...I like...got anything else? Remember, two more entries!

But I really do like it...say what, do you wanna work on the Lands of Arumia, we would need a way to represent drugs, but other than that, I love this!
  • @Therussian58 Wait a sec I thought we only have like 3 entries? And should they all be related to the world Arumia?
  • Mate, 3 entries for the mythic commanders.. what do you think? I'm not just gonna restrict you like that! And no, not all of them must be connected to Arumia. But you still have 2 left for the commander, all the others were just kind of side cards to explain the commander's personality...have fun!

  • @Therussian58 Ohhhhhh...that makes so much more sense. Thanks for the clarification mate!
  • Nop Problem, now get back to smithing!
  • I've been eyeing this contest for a while, finally found the time!
Commander is the best (definitely not biased) format, so glad I could enter.
Anyway, enough procrastination, here's my first entry:

@kltmtg29 I agree that commander is the best format
    image
First time making a multiplayer card. Please give feedback. (pretty sure hes op)
  • @Wackosaru I think it probably is a bit OP, maybe make it trigger only on a specific subset of creatures? I like the concept though! Proper wording would be: Whenever a player casts a nonlegendary creature spell, you may pay {b}{r}. If you do, that spell gains "Tempting Offer - Each opponent may create a token that is a copy of this creature. For each opponent who creates a token this way, you may create a token that is a copy of this creature."
