Hey @Everybody, this contest will end in about a week. No more entries past next Wednesday the 25th. Thursday the 26th, I will give you all feedback on your cards. Friday the 27th I will announce the winners!
Okay, @Everybody, it's the moment you've all been waiting for (and that's my fault because judging this took a lot longer than I expected)!!!!! :::Drumroll:::
The judging!!!!!!
Possessed by Fury by TheClayKnight
@TheClayKnight, this card is interesting. The intent of the card, as far as I can tell, is to gain control of a creature, but have to pay cumulative upkeep on it. It also gets bigger the longer you’ve controlled it. That’s a really cool idea. But, what happens if you enchant your opponent’s Emrakul? That’s two mana for an Emrakul that gets bigger the longer you control it. In this case, you don’t even need to control it for more than one turn! You can probably just kill your opponent right then and there. The card says, “Enchanted creature gets +1/+0 for each age counter on it.” However, it’s the enchantment that has cumulative upkeep, not the creature, so the card doesn’t work. Two more really small, nitpicky things: “Aggromancy” is not a valid Aura subtype, and this card never would be printed in Khans because there are no cumulative upkeep cards in that set. All in all, it’s a really cool idea, but the wording of the card has several major flaws, and the mana cost is too low in my opinion. Nice job!
Foreign Exchange by Animist
A fairly simple card, as far as control-exchanging cards go, but really cool. The mana cost is right for the card, and it’s balanced. Nice art, well worded. There’s not really much else to say. Good job, @Animist!
Shock Therapy by Yururu
Another simple, interesting card. It’s almost like Act of Treason, but the targeted creature is unblockable, and even though that is partially balanced out by the dual-colored mana cost, I would make this an uncommon or even a rare. Good image, and great flavor text. Nice job, @Yururu!
Turn to Nature by DragonFaceEater
Really interesting card, @DragonFaceEater! It’s well balanced, and has classic green flavor text. It’s five mana to get it in the first place, and if you want to gain control of a two-colored, nongreen permanent, you have to use the first ability twice before you can repeat the process for each opponent and then pay 5 mana to gain control of one of them from each opponent. It’s well rounded, well made, and well balanced with a nice image. Great job!
Burren’s Vault by Faiths_Guide
Cool card, @Faiths_Guide. Really well made, nice flavor text, good artwork, and the mana cost and rarity are right. It fits in with the set you made it for, too, though that doesn’t really matter for this contest. The only flaw I see in this card is that it is useful in very few situations. I don’t think anybody would run this card unless their deck had a lot of cards that gained control of creatures. The format where I see this card fitting in is Commander. But it’s really interesting. You can use it defensively to stop your opponent from gaining control of them back, offensively make them unblockable by that player, or defensively to protect them from harm.
Interesting card, @BraveJRL. The classic Haste and {t} ability, well-based on Jeskai, and nice title that matches the card. About the overload…. I don’t think that really fits with Jeskai, considering it was an Izzet thing from Ravnica, but it’s still cool. Imagine you cast it for overload, then gain control of all of your opponents creatures. The next turn, that opponent either gains control of them back plus all of your creatures, or uses it on an opponent if you’re playing multiplayer. This card would be crazy (and fun!) in Commander. The problem with this card is the image, really. It’s fuzzy and badly cropped. It would be a lot better if you could have found a better image. Also, you didn’t give credit to the artist, so please do that in the comments on the card, and the mana symbols are out of order. Still, this card is a really cool idea and would be hilarious in multiplayer, especially Commander. Great work!
Homesickness by Yururu
You can use this card to get back a creature an opponent stole from you or to give control of a creature back to its owner in a situation where that would be more advantageous for you. It’s certainly realistic. The artwork is great, like, really amazing, and I love the poem for the flavor text. The only thing about that is that it is a quote by Elias Lönnrot, and you didn’t give credit. It is, however, a very well-designed and realistic card.
Impatient Conscription by Faiths_Guide
So, imagine Act of Treason. 3 mana, sorcery. Gain control of target creature until end of turn. Untap it. It gains haste until end of turn. Now compare it to Impatient Conscription. 3 mana, sorcery. Gain control of up to two creatures until end of turn. Untap them. They gain haste until end of turn. You lose 1 life for each creature targeted this way. This is basically the same card with three differences: Impatient conscription is {1}{b}{r} while Act of Treason is {2}{r}, you lose 2 life with Impatient Conscription, and with Impatient Conscription, you gain control of two creatures instead of one. The necessity to have {b} and the loss of 2 life isn’t enough, in my opinion, to balance it out. I think this card should have a higher mana cost, and maybe you don’t untap them, so that you can only target creatures that are untapped for it to be effective. Still, I really like the idea of the card. The wording is perfect. The name is awesome and the flavor of Rakdos really fits with the card. The image is great. The only other problem, and it’s very nitpicky and minor, is that you didn’t put quotation marks around the flavor text. Really nice card, great work, @Faiths_Guide!
Illusion of Hope by Sauron123 (love your username, by the way).
This card is really cool. I also happen to love 0 mana cards, by the way. So. Really nice card. The loss risk is balanced by the growing creature, which the person who controls Illusion of Hope can use to their advantage. Like a few of the other cards entered in this contest, I really see this card being hilarious and fun in Commander, where everyone is playing hot potato with spells to get rid of it. The control-changing factor is really cool, and the flavor is great, in that the name “Illusion of Hope” fits well with the card. Nice job, @Sauron123!
Killemall, Burning Pain by unicornsareevil13579
Sorry about my misgivings on the name . This card is either 5 mana for a 1/1, you gain control of a creature until end of turn, untap it and a creature you control, they both gain haste, and then you may sacrifice a creature and put a number of +1/+1 counters on Killemall equal to the sacrificed creature’s power, or the same thing except for 9 mana, gain control of all creatures until end of turn, untap them, they gain haste until end of turn, then sacrifice all creatures and Killemall becomes a 1 billion/1 billion!! O_O
………………………
Really cool idea! The overload cost is good (and so is the normal mana cost), because you have to have {r}{r}{r}{b}{b}[b} plus {3} to cast it for overload, and it’s pretty hard to still be alive on turn 9 with all of that mana. Nice image, perfectly worded. However, you didn’t give credit to the artist, so please do in the comments on the card. Great work, @unicornsareevil13579!
The Spirit Fire by syntheticreign
This card is Permeating Mass the bodybuilder on steroids. You get a whole bunch of 4/3s that you can tap to create more!!!!!!! Nice image, although you didn’t give credit to the artist, so please do in the comments on this card. Two wording issues: The second line should be “Whenever The Spirit Fire deals lethal damage to a creature…” and the third line (the tapping ability) should be “{t}: The Spirit Fire deals 3 damage to target creature.” This card is a little bit overpowered. I would maybe have it only tap for 2 damage, lower its power and toughness, and bump up the mana cost. Anyway, it’s an interesting idea. Good work, @syntheticreign!
Really nice card. I can see it: Two aeons- old Spirits battling it out for all eternity. Each seduces worldly mortal champions to reenact their battle down on the plane below. The fact that you’re gaining control of 2 creatures is pretty much balanced by the 1/3 and the 3/1 that your opponent gets, and by the restrictions of the gaining-control (??). One problem with the flavor text: You put quotes around it, but didn’t provide who said the quote. That only works on a creature because you assume that it is the creature saying it. Great job, @BradXMagic!
Whose Whose by BradXMagic
Before we get into anything, we have to look at the title. Originally the title of this card was Who’s Who’s (Who is who is). Now it’s Whose Whose (Belonging to who belonging to who). I think what you meant to do was Who’s Whose. (Who belongs to whom). Now the text itself. It’s a really cool card! It totally rearranges the board, and would be hilarious to cast in Commander. The wording is perfect, too and the flavor text is good. I’m not sure I love the art, though. It looks like something out of a video game. And you didn’t give credit to the artist. Really good work, @BradXMagic !
Vizgor, Soul Collector by Lord-Wolffe-III
Nice card, @Lord-Wolffe-III. The wording of the second line should be, “When Vizgor, Soul Collector enters the battlefield, gain control of target creature an opponent controls until Vizgor leaves the battlefield.” Also, you don’t capitalize “opponent.” The last ability…. I’m not so sure about it. Most creature-destruction spells in Standard have a cmc of 3 (Murder, Ruinous Path, etc.). So, let’s say you subtract 3 from the 6 mana of the last ability to destroy a creature. Then, it’s three mana to return 2 creatures from any graveyard to the battlefield under your control. That’s unbalanced. Great image, though! Nice job!
Bring to the Fold by Animist
Really interesting card. The mana cost is fine, and your opponent has to choose between two creatures that you choose which they don’t want in your hands. The image is nice, and the flavor text is AWESOME!!! It also fits with the text. Great job, @Animist.
Demonic Puppeteer by Lord-Wolffe-III
I think that this card is a little bit overpowered. Two mana to gain control of a creature and when it enters the battlefield, even with the drawback that Demonic Puppeteer is only 3/3 and easy to kill; a prime target for your opponent’s first Lightning Bolt, is unbalanced. Still, I really like the idea and name. That’s major points for flavor. The abilities of the card really fit with “Demonic Puppeteer.” Really nice work, @Lord-Wolffe-III!
The Thing In the Cellar by Angry_Potatoes
Nice card. The control-changing factor is prominent and interesting, and the fact that it’s a 5/6 balances out the game-loss factor, since it gives your opponent an opportunity to use it to kill you if they can afford to wait that long, while still giving you the overwhelming advantage. I also LOVE the flavor text. It’s really cool how you used a poem, and it really fits with Innistrad. Great flavor, interesting card, @Angry_Potatoes!
Sqinoka, Forest’s Savior by IanLowenthal
Interesting. Most of the entries to this contest have been blue or black or both (which makes sense), so I like how you shook things up a little bit by creating a G/R entry. The card is well balanced, but I’m not sure if two players can control the same card at the same time. Reclaim is an interesting ability, though. Nice idea, @IanLowenthal!
Purchase by Animist
Really nice card. Wording is good, idea is great. The mana cost and color are perfectly fine . I love Gold (in the mtg sense, that is)!! Not much else to say! Great work, @Animist!
Halimar Pheonix by Gelectrode
Really interesting card. It has haste and flying, so that’s probably 4 damage the turn you cast it. The thing that balances that is the fact that it has 1 toughness, so it’s easy to kill, but that is slightly offset by the fact that you can easily get it back, but that is offset by the fact that your opponent can get it if they beat you to casting an instant or sorcery. Let’s say, for example, Halimar Pheonix is in your graveyard, and you Bolt your opponent, then get it back and hit them for 4. That’s seven damage for one Bolt, which is kind of unbalanced. Also, you did write “is is” instead of “is in.” Still, I really like this card. It protects your cards from your opponent’s spells, has a really interesting interpretation of the “exchanging control.” Good flavor, too, with the “Halimar” part. Great job, @Gelectode!
And there you go! Later today, I'll announce the winners. Please tell me if you have any problem with what I said about your cards, and please don't take it personally if I said something bad.
Hey hey hey, @Everybody! The time is now / the flag is flown / by my choices / away you'll be blown! (How's that for a bit of spontaneous poetry?)
And now, without any further ado...... :::Drumroll (Even louder than the first one):::::
THE WINNERS:
1st Place: Thing in the Cellar by @Angry_Potatoes! Congratulations! 2nd Place: Purchase by @Animist! Great work! 3rd Place: Halimar Pheonix by @Gelectrode! Nice job!
::::The brass section plays a triumphant few measures, and the crowd goes wild!:::::
For the rest of you, don't lose hope! There are two more Honorable Mention slots open that will be chosen by our 1st and 2nd place winners! To said winners, @Angry_Potatoes and @Animist, please tell me which of the cards entered in this contest deserves an Honorable Mention (please don't nominate your own card). To all of our winners (add on @Gelectrode and @Faiths_Guide), I will distribute the prizes promptly! To our two, as of yet unnamed, Honorably Mentioned, I will favorite your entries as soon as you are chosen.
Congratulations to all, and thanks for a great contest! I hope to work with you all again in the near future.
Glad you liked my entry! For an honorable mention I nominate Burren's Vault; the idea behind it is weird and usually not worth it, but it has potential for some really cool interactions between cards, especially with damage-dealing board wipes.
Oh, @Angry_Potatoes, never mind. I missed that lol XD. Okay, though I can't favorite a card twice! I'll ask Corwinnn if Faiths_Guide should receive another 1/4 Circuit Point.
