Magic: The Gathering 2017 Core Set

As many of you have undoubtedly heard, the Wizards of the Coast have announced that they are no longer making Yearly Core Sets. So I am holding a 2017 Core Set competition so that we can Smith a set to fill in that gap.

Rules:
1. You can have as many entries as you like. The only wexception to this is if you have made more than 150 entries. (Because that would take about a month to judge by myself.) Just please do not have any re-entries of cards.
2. No Irrational, Unreasonable, Unrealistic, Unglued/Unhinged Cards that would not be made into a set by the Wizards.
3. Your entries may be cards that you already have made in the past as long as they were not contest winners.
4. Cards may have no complex mechanics; Evergreen Keywords only. (Unless you message me and get the ok to use other abilities. If this happens, then I will make a comment, notifying people of the exception)
5. Have fun.

The last day of entry is the 15th of December. This is because it is an almost year long contest that will most likely have many entries. I will need much time to judge the cards and most of the time available to me will be during my winter break from academic assignments.

The Ways the Cards will be judged is in a rubric that will be posted into this discription by or earlier than President's Day. In the space below:

Prizes:
Winners will be announced by the 10th of January in 2018. (Unless there is a reason for a delay in which case I will do my best to inform you of it ahead of time.
If I am on schedule, Prizes will be awarded on MLK Day (January 15th) of 2018.
1st Place: 3 months of Premium Membership and a like 5 of your entries
2nd Place: 2 months of Premium Membership and a like on 4 of your entries
3rd Place: 1 month of Premium Membership and a like on 3 of your entries

Have Fun! Godspeed!

  • Damn.
Is it really a good idea to have a year long contest though? Half the people who will have made entries will have left by then.

Also, five favourites are the max that are allowed as a contest's prizes.

"The last day of entry is the 15th of December."
"If I am on schedule, Prizes will be awarded on MLK Day (January 15th) of 2018."

Hahahahahahaha... Oooooh boy. Half of contest creators abandon their contests within a week. I'm not saying it is impossible to do a 52-week contest but I am saying that... It is impossible to do a 52-week contest.

Also, the point of core sets was to reprint core cards for new user experience. You're pretty much asking for people to make a reprint set.

I'm going to grab some popcorn. This is going to be a bigger flaming wreckage than the Hindenburg.
  • @kltmtg29
@strongbelieves is the biggest savage I have ever seen. And that's coming from someone who goes to the most unruly school in our whole city (luckily I'm moving soon).
  • First of all, I am now going to make sure to check out this contest daily, and set reminders on the days of last entries. Thx @strongbelieves, you got me in point-proving motivation mode
  • Time to get to work. If I can't make more than 150, I'm going to make all of those 150 entries count.
  • Good, thats the right attitude
  • If I was you, I'd give more specific rules, like "make it simple" and "use only evergreen mechanics" (since those are both things implemented in actual core sets).

If I was you, I would store all the cards you like in a set, and then end the contest when that set has enough cards for an actual core set. Although that may be too similar to the "CS17" set by @Tomigon.

So is the idea we collectively make a set or each make our own set? I'm up for either!
  • I'm making a land cycle, how do you feel about them so far?

  • Cool idea!

@StrongBelieves, Wow, just back away slowly... You too @KJMartin. Although I do admit that doing a year-long contest is a bit daring, that doesn't mean that it is impossible. Just look at my open discussions.

Anyways, looks like I need to get to work. 3 months of membership! That is a nice prize to work towards. @Ranshi922, I give you my full approval.
  • @JkMartin, you make a very good point. I will get right on imposing that rule.
  • @Ranshi922
Don't worry Martin, I'm joking too XD
Cool! I'll get down to some entries!
  • @BradXmagic, I was thinking that maybe I would just cover the land cycle and basic lands. Focus more on nonland cards. But if you insist, you can use some entries on a land cycle.

The rule "core sets only use evergreen mechanics" isn't quite right. Look at Origins with its Renowned keyword for example.

So I'd propose to make one or two mechanics for this set first that everybody can use then.
  • @KJMartin

You British teens have never met a true savage... I have a bunch of stuff I could say, but it's too savage for a child-friendly server.
  • I'm certain that most people here could do a pretty convincing veteran sailor impression, @TrippleBoggey3
  • @TrippleBoggey3
You don't know what our school's like.
    I'll PM you.
  • Okay, guys, can we end the savage war and get back to M17?
  • @Feyamius, I understand that point. That is why I hadn't included that rule at first, forgetting that by not including the rule, people could put in cards with custom mechanics, and things like rally or multikicker.
  • @Ranshi922, I really like the idea of all of us doing a set together throughout a long period. Still, to get the best results, I think you should lead the way by adding some mechanics you would like in the set, be it official ones or new ones (we have an entire thread with cool mechanics you can use on the forums). Also, the general idea or archetype of each color / color pair on the set would help us create a more consistent set.
  • @fepiera, I understand your point. I will leave it to a vote to whether or not I should close this contest and start another thread to develop a 2017 Core Set.
All in favour of the proposal comment an "aye" and all against comment a "nay". At about 7:30am 2/1/17 NY time I will count the votes.
  • @Ranshi922 , I believe you could adjust this thread, but since it's aye or nay, I'll go with
    AYE
  • Not to be a party pooper but to my knowledge (feel free to correct me) the core sets where mostly basic stuff and never really had new key words.
Stuff like terrastomper and Shi van dragon.

Yes they had cool cards and mechanics but they didn't create new ones like aether revolt did with improvise.

This is probably why WOTC doesn't want to continue making core sets because they want to be more creative and speed more time on their blocks.

So we/you should decide if you want a core set or a new set with new abilities.
  • Aye on just plain development as a group. Seems more like what this "contest" should be.
  • I'd like to join this contest, I will once the detail are solidified.

The vote has come in and it is 2 aye and 1/2 nay. I assumed that @KJMartin's entry counted as a vote for the contest to go on, but I was not sure so I counted it as 1/2. Even if it is a 1, then the vote is 2 to 1. I will start the discussion so that we can make the set together in the "Custom Card Sets" Category. It will be titled Cardsmith 17.

I will create the new discussion before 7pm tonight.
  • Would an admin please close the discussion please.

I am very sorry guys. I will be unable to start the discussion tonight. One of my professors hinted at a pop quiz and I had not been listening that much today. I have to cram. His quizzes are as difficult as a final should be!
I also won't be able to start the discussion tomorrow night because of a date that I have with my girlfriend. But I will most likely be able to start it somewhere between 1 and 2 in the afternoon.
However, if one of you guys would like to take charge of the Cardsmith 17 set, go ahead.
