    Announcement

    1. Ok, this round is closed. Please send no more entries.
    2. I'll judge in short. To all entrants, please wait for the result.

    Please forgive me if I'm wrong in this. So, here's the result:

    @TenebrisNemo Seems like a quick win card if it could get on the battlefield. It also seems like a worse version of Cromat because you can only activate its abilities once per turn but it's a nonlegendary so it's fine, I guess.

    @IanLowenthal From left to right:
    1. Great card if you could pump it and let it slay your opponents' creatures.
    2. The second and third are pretty synergistic and could be great in creatures oriented deck.

    @Brainifyer Shouldn't it be BG instead of just B?

    @creepybeagle The benefits for your opponent seem too few for that kind of card and that cost. Nice card anyway.

    And the winner for this round is:

    Nobody (Hah)!
  • Does my card not get to be judged?
  • @AbzanCompany Whoops, I overlooked that.

    Fine. You choose the next challenge. I'm tired of this sh*t.

    @creepybeagle Sorry, but you're not the winner this time. See ya.
  • @sanjaya666, Thanks... I guess.

    Ok, next challenge: make an equipment card!

    Example:

    Edit: I fixed some formatting errors in this card.
  • Both of the two entries we have so far are pretty cool. I would like to get several more entries though before ending the challenge. I will keep this challenge open for at least the next 24 hours.
  • I am going to judge this challenge soon. If you would like to enter this challenge, please submit an entry within the next several hours.
  • Time's up! Well, judging will be quick.

    @TenebrisNemo: That is a very unique idea for an equipment, and I could see it working into some sort of infinite combo. I like the flavor as well, and the card seems well balanced (although I could see it with a lower equip cost).

    @Brainifyer: Another unique effect. I like the idea of "leaching" mana from opponents. The cost to equip does seem kind of high, although it does seem like the type of effect WOTC would be cautious about giving out cheap.

    Winner: @TenebrisNemo! Next challenge is all yours.
  • Nice. Alright, the next challenge is about creating cards with...

    Heroic — Whenever you cast a spell that targets [your card's name], …

    Examples:

    imageimageimage
  • Here are my heroic creatures. I think cumulative upkeep works well here, no?
  • I'll wait for more entries if there even will be any.
  • Bump and @TenebrisNemo is judging happening soon?
  • @AbzanCompany - It will. Has to happen.
  • Alright, I have started judging! It shouldn't take long, tho!
  • Aaaaaand it DID take longer than I anticipated because I fell asleep! Well, after a not-so-quite-short nap, I've finished the judging...

    The Axe of Judgement falls!

    @AbzanCompany

    - Lightning-Strike Champion: Well-balanced distant cousin of Thor! The only little mistake which I found was the lack of quotation marks in the flavor text, but that doesn't stop him from throwing lightning spears at opponents!

    - Nei'ar the Breaking Wave: The CMC and the last ability's mana cost are WAY too high! Also there are some formatting errors in the Heroic ability. Anyways, this is how I would have written the Heroic ability:

    Whenever you cast a spell that targets Nei'ar the Breaking Wave, scry X, where X is equal to that spell's converted mana cost, then draw a card.

    And lastly, I believe CMC {3}{u}{u} and the last ability's cost {1}{u}{u} would have been spot-on. Very interesting concept nevertheless!

    - Aetherblade Renegade: I like the theme of this card very much for some reason. I think the last ability may be a little bit too cheap, maybe six energy counters would've done the trick. Anyways, it still like this epic ROGUE WARRIOR!

    - The Oldstrong: This guy is so powerful that I feel its CMC is too low, yet I also feel like the last ability's mana cost is too high. For example, if you have 4 artifacts in your graveyard when you cast it for 6 mana, it's already a 10/10 monstrous metal warrior. Should have balanced this a little more!

    @IanLowenthal

    - Exalted Guardian: With two little {g} Giant Growths, this fella will become 14/14 at your next turn when it can attack. The cumulative upkeep gives him a limited amount of time to be on the battlefield, but I feel that if you manage to give him haste with a spell which targets him, he will become a very hard hitter which comes out of the blue on the same turn when it enters the battlefield.

    - Fell Huntmaster: Interesting design which would be quite useful in a deck which brings cards back from your graveyard. A powerful and formidable fellow!

    - Forest Undertaker: Now this is what a druid of the ancient tales would look like. In an old forest with his animal(s), bringing them back to life and keeping the land alive. Although there are some formatting errors in the Heroic ability, I like this card a lot! I believe the ability should be written like this:

    Heroic - Whenever you cast a spell that targets Forest Undertaker, return a creature with power two or less or a land card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

    I could see that there was a lot of space unused in your three cards and I thought maybe it would have been good to fill it with some interesting flavor text or reminder text of the cumulative upkeep to give them some more official look. Of course that is not necessary, and sometimes it's certainly not possible. The most important thing in the card is certainly the way how it works and how it looks.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    And now, the winner of this challenge is...

    @AbzanCompany's Aetherblade Renegade!
  • Thanks @TenebrisNemo! Ok, next challenge: make a card using any combination of Esper colors! (so W, U, B, W/U, W/B, U/B, W/U/B)
  • Any one else going to enter?
  • edited July 2017
    I think this card fits Esper's weird sense of utility very well.

    We want to post another card as we felt it gave an inspiring sentiment. Otherwise, count it as a replacement entry.

    Inspired by this video, Mr Robot MV. (Spoilers ahead!)

    I'd make you look, I'd make you lie.
    I'd take the coldness from your eyes.
    But you told me, "If you love me, let it die."

    Ok, since no more entries seem to be coming in, here are the judgements.

    @TenebrisNemo: The card's ability is pretty cool, and I like the unique spin on copying creature cards in graveyards. There are a few formatting/grammatical issues, but overall I admire the creativity behind the card and the intelligent way you balanced the copying effect.

    @modnation675: Quencher of the Mind is a cool way to draw cards via afflict, but I the card is kind of lackluster by itself, mainly because it's stats make it very blockable. If it was a 2/3, I think it would more readily work by itself. However, the idea behind the card is intriguing; the trick just seems to be giving it the support it needs.

    As for A Lesson in Despair, giving your opponent an option on a kill spell always is worrisome to me. You'll never use it when you absolutely have to kill something, or when you really want to draw cards. However, the fact that it offers options to the opponent means that the options are quite above-level, and combining this thing with Snapcaster seems great to me. To be honest, I really am not sure whether this card would be a powerhouse or fringe. It may just be outclassed by Modern's one-mana removal (Lightning Bolt, Fatal Push, Path to Exile), but it seems like one of those good, game 1 value cards that will get sided out for specific answers. (Oh, why not just make A Lesson in Despair: as it resolves, put it on the bottom of your library, then any OTHER player may have you shuffle your library.)

    In conclusion, the victory goes to @TenebrisNemo for the creative idea and beautiful artwork. Congrats!
