Custom Mechanic Contest: Coalesce!
I made a custom mechanic a while back, and after looking through a couple of the cards I made I decided I would love to see what the community can think up. Your job is to make a card with my custom Coalesce mechanic, that works like this:
Coalesce {x} -- (Condition), you may cast this card for its coalesce cost.
I know that may not be a very good description, so let me explain. Cards with coalesce don't have a casting cost, their only way of being cast is through its coalesce cost. They can have any card type, as long as it's a spell. The condition can be anything at all; it can be anything from the opponent doing something to you doing something to something random happening.
So why is coalesce different than just saying "so and so can only be cast after so and so happens"? Well, for a couple reasons:
-Spells with coalesce are cast whenever their conditions meant, whenever that may be (they don't need to specify they have flash)
-The card effect can piggy-back off the condition
Examples:
Ultimately, you could probably reword these effects without using coalesce, but it's a much cleaner and creative way of using an "alternate casting condition" mechanic.
Also, as a side note, I'm aware that technically you would have to specifically state a card's colors due to it's lack of a casting cost, but for the sake of the mechanic and the contest we'll just say it's implied the card's colors are that of its coalesce cost.
Admittedly, I made this mechanic a long time ago and looking back I'm finding multiple problems with the cards I made, but I'm convinced that the rest of the community will be able to make some incredible stuff out of it!
Rules
-Cards need to be new (probably not a problem)
-Cards need to have Coalesce in some way
-No joke cards, but humor is okay (if a card is too unhinged in my opinion the creator will be notified)
-Cards can't have a casting cost
-Credit the artist! If you don't you should have a good reason, entries without credit to the artist will be accepted but will ALSO be held in lower regard than those with proper credit
-Three entries per contestant
-Contest will close for judging May 15th
You will be judged on:
-Creativity
-Balance
-Flavor
(Pretty simple)
Prizes
-1st place: A follow from me and 5 favorites of your choice
-2nd place: 4 favorites of your choice
-3rd place: 3 favorites of your choice
-Honorable mentions: A favorite for your entry and one other card of your choice
Now, I know I've said a lot. If anyone still has questions as to the specifics of the mechanic feel free to ask. That being said, I can't wait to see what everyone has in store, and may the best smith win!
