@Doug Those were all really interesting uses of the Orzhov theme. I would love to see what you could do in a different challenge of similar nature. Thank you!
I'd also recommend the following revisions to the mechanic Malfunction.
Malfunction: If you cast another instant or sorcery spell this turn, you may pay [alternate price] (life, mana, tap creatures, etc.) when you cast this spell. If you do, [effect].
Perhaps Invest also deals that much damage to target opponent? Or maybe drawing a card as well. Or would that make the ability a little too overpowered?
Spellcraft could be upgraded to be Spellcraft: When you cast this spell, you may reveal an [instant, sorcery, artifact, etc.] from your hand. If you do, [EFFECT]. It would be like your actually crafting another spell, or adding on to another, with a resource you already have.
@Doug, next time, I would highly suggest crediting the original creator of Invest instead of calling it your own. I know imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but I bet, somewhere out in the world, @GodOfWar is kinda cranky at you.
@doug Love Invest though I agree with Mod on the additional life part! The artist of Tax Thrull is Lucas Graciano, and Thnk you forgot to put power and toughness on the angel.
@modnation675 If Study was printed in Izzet, I would want to see some sort of Grenzo, Dungeon Master with it, so the any player thing might be important if any of them are gonna be strong spells.
@brcien Yeah, I agree. I removed the other version from the comment since I'd prefer people to use this one.
Study (When you cast this spell, you may exile the top two cards of your library. If you do, put this card on the bottom of your library as it resolves, then any player may have you shuffle your library.)
I'd like to do a DnD themed commander, but need to find suitable artwork first. That's usually the difficult part.
I've got a new Orzhov mechanic. It's called con. It's similar to tribute, but not exactly. Basically, when a creature with con enters the battlefield, it gives a minor disadvantage to you or a minor advantage to your opponent. However, when the creature dies, it gives your opponents a disadvantage of some sort. Example--Con: When this creature enters the battlefield, target opponent gains 3 life. When this creature dies, each opponent loses two life. I think this works well with the Orzhov flavour, but I'm not sure if something like that would be viable in every format. Any thoughts?
@Tigersol Malfunction: If you have already cast an instant or sorcery spell this turn, you may pay [alternate price] (life, mana, tap creatures, etc.) when you cast this card. If you do, [effect]. Volatility: If you have less than [measurable quantity] (cards in hand, life, instants/sorceries in graveyard, etc.), resolve an effect. Spellcraft: When you cast this card, you may reveal an instant or sorcery from your hand. If you do, this card costs {2} less to cast.
@NokiSkaur I love Malfunction. Just, the name doesn't fit at all. Volatility looks cool but it doesn't seem very Izzet. Maybe in Rakdos or a discard/aggro deck? It looks like it would shine in other worlds though. I absolutely love spellcraft, it's so Izzet. But, I would reword it like this for even better effect: Spellcraft: When you cast this card, you may reveal an instant or sorcery card from your hand. If you do, {effect}. This way you can do more things, embodying the many results of Izzet experimentation. This could be dealing damage, drawing cards, producing mana, and more!
@Tigersol I'm not quite sure what's wrong with the name for Malfunction. Would you be okay with giving it a more fitting name? The idea right now is that the recent use of magic has reduced the reliability of the spell, creating minor problem and an unexpected benefit.
Possible Selesnya ability: Swarm X: Put X [creature tokens] onto the battlefield. If you have [some number] or more creatures in play [some ability ie. lifegain, creature buffs]
@SpiritDragon I already have the Selesnya mechanic set up, but thanks for the suggestion. As for spellburst, it basically seems like a worse version of replicate. I kinda want to break the "Izzet copies spells" loop that they're in.
I just saw the Planeswalker thing ^^ Just wanted to comment on a few of them (I haven't read the whole conversation, my apologies in advance if this has been discussed before):
Planeswalker Guilds: Gideon--Azorius --> Maybe Gideon's soldier aspect makes him more suited for Boros? Jace--Izzet --> Jace is *definitely* Azorius, he's the Living Guildpact Lliana--Rakdos --> Interesting choice, could do Orzhov as well since she once was a healer Garruk--Golgari --> Perfect fit Elspeth--Selesnya --> Perfect fit, could also work for Boros though Ajani--Boros --> Ajani is officially Selesnya Domri--Gruul --> Perfect fit Nissa--Simic --> Perfect fit Tezzeret--Dimir --> Perfect fit Sorin--Orzhov --> Perfect fit
Where is Chandra?? She's the only core member of the Gatewatch that doesn't appear, it's sad ^^ She could do Izzet? Izzet are mad inventors that like to blow stuff, she would fit right in (also she has the inventor's goggles xD)
@ningyounk The problem that I have with putting Gideon in the Boros Legion is that, while he originally thought they would be the best at keeping order, he quit his allegiance with them after he found out what Aurelia's plans for Ravnica were. I didn't want to put Gideon in the Boros because I didn't think it would make sense canonically, but I needed someone to fill the Boros slot. I used Ajani because, while he is usually mono white or white/green, there have been some cards where he is white/red. Far from the majority, but it still exists.
The only ones that I know for sure will be in the set are Tezzeret, Jace, and Domri Rade. I might make an an etherium planeswalker for City of Ruin, and I'll probably bring Chandra in for that set too. I only had the list of planeswalkers so that I could see different people's interpretations of popular characters.
Sure, I was just pointing what sounded great and not so great from my perspective so you have some external feedback ^^ By the way, from a more general point of view, are you really going to put 10 planeswalkers in the same set? The average being at 5/block (so 2.5/set) that's a lot of planeswalkers.
Also while I'm at it, is the list of mechanics on the front page up-to-date? I originally came to take a look at those and see where the set was at, but reading the three pages of discussion would be a bit long.

That would make more sense given the way Magic cards tend to be phrased. Thank you.
Is there anything inherently broken about either Volatility or Malfunction?
But I'd have to say spellcraft is too limited and would possibly cause some balancing issues.
Perhaps Invest also deals that much damage to target opponent? Or maybe drawing a card as well. Or would that make the ability a little too overpowered?

Also, thank you for the compliments!
As for spellcraft, I think that's interesting but needs to be worded efficiently to fit on the cards.
Certainly, the Izzet are my favorite guild.

Thank you for the confirmation Gelectrode. Yeah, at least I am for not referencing it.

Lazy day design, name was supposed to be Spectral Endorser
Example--Con: When this creature enters the battlefield, target opponent gains 3 life. When this creature dies, each opponent loses two life.

I totally agree, that is so Izzet. The problem is in modern, the added storminess could break it.
Spellburst:
Duplicate this spell once if and only if you have cast fewer than 2 spells this turn
It eliminates the almost infinite usage of the copying, but if still allows you to have more than one spell cast from the card
Swarm X: Put X [creature tokens] onto the battlefield. If you have [some number] or more creatures in play [some ability ie. lifegain, creature buffs]
I already have the Selesnya mechanic set up, but thanks for the suggestion. As for spellburst, it basically seems like a worse version of replicate. I kinda want to break the "Izzet copies spells" loop that they're in.
which ones have you done so I know which ones to work on?
Azorius, Izzet, Selesnya, Boros,
They have different purposes, but only one person has entered this contest.
Planeswalker Guilds:
Gideon--Azorius --> Maybe Gideon's soldier aspect makes him more suited for Boros?
Jace--Izzet --> Jace is *definitely* Azorius, he's the Living Guildpact
Lliana--Rakdos --> Interesting choice, could do Orzhov as well since she once was a healer
Garruk--Golgari --> Perfect fit
Elspeth--Selesnya --> Perfect fit, could also work for Boros though
Ajani--Boros --> Ajani is officially Selesnya
Domri--Gruul --> Perfect fit
Nissa--Simic --> Perfect fit
Tezzeret--Dimir --> Perfect fit
Sorin--Orzhov --> Perfect fit
Where is Chandra?? She's the only core member of the Gatewatch that doesn't appear, it's sad ^^ She could do Izzet? Izzet are mad inventors that like to blow stuff, she would fit right in (also she has the inventor's goggles xD)
So here's another version (changes are bold):
Jace—Azorius
Chandra—Izzet
Lliana—Rakdos
Garruk—Golgari
Ajani—Selesnya
Gideon—Boros
Domri—Gruul
Nissa—Simic
Tezzeret—Dimir
Sorin—Orzhov
