Hour of Devastation Fifth Plansewalker

Only four planeswalkers have been spoiled for Hour of Devastation. There should be one more. Looking at previous stes it looks like it would be a returning planeswalker. So which one can we expect?

The definitely not:
Straight away we can rule out all the dead or depowerd planeswalkers, so no Elspeth, Xenagos, Vesner, Teferi or Freyalise. Also, I don't think we'll get another Gatewatch planeswalker.

The almost certainly not:
These are the ones who would make no sense appearing: Koth doesn't have the time to leave New Phyrexia, Dack Fayden, Daretti and Kaya would be strange beyond strange appearing here, Sorin's stuck in a wall, Sarkhaan seems happy in a Bolas-free life and kinda had a punchup with Jace and Chandra sooo, Nahiri's done with this crap and Vraska's showing up in Ixalan.

The probably not:
I don't think Narset even knows Bolas or the Gatewatch exists. Samut's R/G so no Domri Rade. There isn't really an ocean for Kiora to summon sea creatures from but it would be nice to see a new, character-developed Kiora soon. Tamiyo's already in Standard and 'reluctant to interfere' is literally part of her character description. I can't see Dovin, Saheeli or even Tezzeret returning so soon. Likewise with Arlin.

The maybe:
I would like to see Garruk returning soon, but Hour of Devastation does seem a bit of a stretch. Karn might be powerful enough to rival Bolas(?) but its widely hypothesized that he'll make a return in Dominiria. Ral Zarek might return one day, he might show up here. Probably not.

So who are the actual likely candidates?
#3: Ugin
The Gatewatch seems a bit defaeted right now, so they'll need help from a powerful ally. Who better than Ugin? Ugin's been asleep for ages and I'm sure he wants to stop Bolas' plans. Ugin knows of the Gatewatch, but I don't thik Bolas even knows Ugin is alive. The biggest problem is that a new Ugin would cost a lot of mana, and that would be an odd decision along with two Bolas' and a very expensive Nissa. Also, Fate Reforged wasn't that long ago.

#2: Ashiok
It's well known Bolas likes collecting minions, especially powerful planeswalkers ala Sarkhaan and Tezzeret. We haven't heard of Ashiok for a while, so it's possible she/he/it fell into Bolas' thrall. Ashiok also fits into his colours, and shares the God-Pharohs casting from exile jazz. The problem here is that we already have a Dimir walker in Standard (but not a good one.). And while Theros is older that Fate Reforged, its still pretty recent.

#1: Tibalt
Ok, here me out. Tibalt checks all the boxes. He's powerful, so Bolas would want him as a minion. He wants carnage, so he doesn't care if he has an elder dragon master as long as he gets worlds to end. Which he does, incidentally. He'd be Rakdos, and the only other BR planeswalkers are Daretti from Conspiricy II and crazy Sarkhaan. Avacyn Restored was ages ago and we don't know what happened to Tibalt since. He's in Bolas' colors. He's in the colors of a new mechanic. And seriously, if I was on Wizards i would be dying to make a good Tibalt, and this is the best excuse to do so for a long time.

So what do you guys think?

Comments

  • Wait does there have to be 5?
  • Cuz most sets have 2
  • 3 cmc Jace.
If they're going to stop with the appearance of the Gatewatch after this block...then, the only planeswalker that hasn't been printed to be in standard after rotation is Jace.
  • Why not possibly a second native walker?
  • @Mellenius , pretty much every major character in the story has a card that's already been revealed for them. There aren't many good options, except perhaps Hapatra.

Personally, I don't expect to see any other walker cards in this set, besides Bolas and Samut. Aether Revolt only had Ajani and Tezzeret, so I don't see why we'd expect another.
  • @Platypusburger
WOTC has stated that they are avoiding flooding sets with planeswalkers and are going to not do the planeswalker cycles so frequently so as to make them feel less forced.

They also are saying that at times a plane may have no planeswalkers from the group on some planes.
  • Forgot about Aether Revolt only having 4. My Tibalt dreams were crushed...
  • @modnation675 , wasn't that announcement part of the plan going forward to the no-block model, i.e. not taking effect until after Ixalan?

    @Platypusburger
As far as I know, yes. Obviously they can't change cards that are already printed.

I was just referring to in the future as they don't make changes to recent sets aside from banning or restricting cards.
