New Blight Ability Contest! **Circuit Challenge - Season 3**

The challenge for this contest is to create a card involving a new ability, blight!

The ability works like this: Blight (Whenever a creature with blight fights, blocks or becomes blocked by another creature, that creature becomes blighted and gains blight.)

Blight does nothing on its own, but most cards with blight should add something on to the ever expanding plague!

Here are some examples of cards:

Cards will be judged by their creativity, flavour and balance.
If you wish to continue the "Carrier cycle" of one drops with blight or make cards outside of green and black, they won't be marked down.

The cards only have to have something to do with blight, so it can (for example) be a sorcery that blights a creature.

PRIZES AND ENTRY RULES:
First place: A follow and 5 favourites (of my choice.)
Runner-up: A follow and 2 favourites.
Honarable mention: I will favourite the card.

2 entries allowed per person. I will judge two days after I announce that I will judge the contest (probably a week - two weeks.)
All cards can be edited in that timeframe and you may mention if you want me to judge specific cards you have entered.

If you have any other queries, please ask!

NOTES AND SPECIFICATIONS:
-A creature that is blighted does not necessarily have blight, and a creature with blight is not necessarily blighted.
-If you create a "Blighted creatures [...]" effect, they do not have to be strictly negative, and can just be any effect.
- A creature with blight does not have to deal damage to blight other creatures (Yes, you can make a poisonous wall.)

**NOTE**
This is the FIRST circuit challenge of Season Three!!

So this is basically Sliver methodology with an infect mechanic? Cool, I think my only question is is any creature with Blight, Blighted? Because when a creature with Blight fights another creature, that creature gains the condition "Blighted", much like "Exerted" in Amonkhet. That being said, are all creatures with Blight inherently Blighted? Because if not, I'd suggest rephrasing the mechanics on the creatures to say "Creatures with Blight have (ability/effect).", otherwise only the creatures attacked and given the condition "Blighted" will have the benefits.
  • A creature with blight is not blighted. This is so that it is not affected by its own blight effects. There are both positive and negative blight effects, as seen in the example cards. Thank you for the question!
  • I'm a bit confused. Why is blight both positive and negative? Which one are we trying to achieve?
  • Blight is the ability, Blighted is the condition. Not sure why it's positive and negative, other than it's a plague-like, and some creatures benefit from that.

@syntheticreign Its really just for mechanic reasons. If all blight cards did were negative things then the game would become a boring mess of each player having ten creatures but not wanting to attack with them. Also, in my story (of Varia) the plague is used as a weapon, which explains things like deathtouch.
  • I think what we're getting at is the Shelled Carrier gives another creature deathtouch, whereas Toxic Gypsy gives them -1/-0. Why would you ever attack with a creature that benefitted your opponent and not you?

@syntheticreign You would play it later in the game, giving all of the creatures you have that are blighted a bonus, whereas the negative effects are more useful lategame. There are also cards that I have made (check my account) that can just blight any creature, including your own.
  • I think the challenge is to find a way to make Blight functional not only in obvious ways, but in some unconventional ways as well!
  • It'll be easier to do if you don't think too hard about it. I just wanted a contest for fun new cards. I understand the confusion, though.
  • I like it, and I think it has some fun potential, that's why I think this would make a great Circuit Challenge! Tomorrow I'll go ahead and make an official announcement!!

Hopefully this is along the lines of what you were looking for.

  • @syntheticreign I think I understand what you're going for, but I believe the way things are worded, the card's two effects (or at least some parts of them) persist forever. I think that when there are multiple until end of turn effects in a single ability, it is worded "Until end of turn," (please correct me if I'm wrong). Thank you for your participation!

Yeah I think you're right. Let me change that real quick

    EDIT: Fixed!
  • First entry

  • @Corwinn
    Is that for Season 3?
  • @jazipa
Can I change the key word to
"Whenever a creature with blight deals damage to another creature, that creature becomes Blighted and gains Blight."?
  • @Jyagaimasu I don't understand what you mean...
  • @jazipa
It's the difference between an ability dealing damage and the creature itself dealing damage.

    Removed.
  • Is that alright?
  • @Jyagaimasu I'm confused. I understand the card you have made, but what did you want to do earlier? I have the reminder text for the ability at the top of the page.
  • With the card I just entered, Its ambush ability triggers the Blight. With the wording 'fight' the ambush ability won't trigger.
  • @Jyagaimasu That's the idea. The blight should only trigger when the creature fights another creature.
  • Oh, In which case my card is mostly useless. I had wanted to use it so when it ambushes another creature, it spreads the infection.

@jazipa Are you sure that two entries is enough?

Also a quick rules query: Are you sure that you meant fight instead of combat damage? The thing is, fight is not combat damage (read here: http://mtg.gamepedia.com/Fight). That means the only way to trigger blight is with Prey Upon, Blood Feud etc- blocking would not work. I believe that's not what you intended.
  • @Brainifyer Why do you think you'd need more? I believe that two is the perfect number.
  • "- A creature with blight only has to fight another creature to blight it, not just deal damage or combat damage."

I'm confused. Please respond with with the letter(s) of the following that apply to what causes blight creatures to spread the blight.

a.) When it deals damage to another creature.
b.) When it deals combat damage to another creature.
c.) When the keyword "fight" is used in an effect and a creature with blight is targeted and thus deals damage equal to its power to the other creature targeted by the "fight" effect.
d.) When the creature with blight blocks or becomes blocked by another creature.
  • @Monstrumonium You're complitcating this. When a creatue with blight FIGHTS another creature, through any effect, in combat and even if it didn't deal damage, the creature it fought gains blight and becomes blighted. Only through fight effects.
  • @jazipa
I don't think you're aware of the "fight" mechanic. Creatures that deal combat damage don't "fight". There are cards that make creatures "fight" but this does not happen during combat. It's a technicality in the wording
