Phoenix contest

  • So many birds. it's like a symphony of death, fire and rebirth.
    After i had evaluated the cards i think i got a clear top 3 where these cards have one specific aspect in common. They require active plays and will not support the deck passively, that is that they will not return unless the player plays for that purpose.

    But first the honorable mentions:

    @logiecrokie - Skyfeather Phoenix & Phoenix Familiar
    @sanjaya666 - Ocean Stormbird

    3rd place:
    @Faiths_Guide - Sunflare Phoenix
    image

    Sunflare pheonix (intended) gives simple instructions what you are supposed to do with it. That is attack, attack, attack! This is further supported by its ability to return by just this action (or if it is tapped due to an ability or similar).
    The bird has a purpose and it supports the player for doing just that. if the bird is not used for offensive purpose then it will turn fragile and may die an eternal (ordinary) death.

    2nd place:
    @Tomigon - Yavimaya Phoenix

    This beastly phoenix is quite similar to Sunflare Phoenix that it requires its controller to play a specific strategy to keep the bird and is rewarded therafter. However, due to the nature of evolve, the player can't be too agressive with the creature spells or there will be no way to remove the -1/-1 counter when the bird dies and thus making it "mortal". This is in contrast to the other part of the bird that rewards the player for playing big creature after each other as you will get a flying behemoth.
    Its an easy to understand phoenix but quite more difficult to find the balance both in play and in deck construction. Go big? go safe? or find the perfect balance.

    1st place:
    @TenebrisNemo - Sacred Phoenix
    image

    When you are aggresive and is all about making the opponent roll their life-counter fast and secure down to the beautiful 0. you want some quality creatures and spells that can support you in that. The rush one gets when the opponent is at 3 life left and you top pick lightning bolt is electric (pun intended), This moment is however drown in the sea when the opponents follow up with "i'll counter that" as they reveal force of will. Sacred phoenix makes that electric feeling into a warm feeling under beautiful bird song as your opponent just wasted 2 cards for what seems like nothing.

    This phoenix does not have the high peak value that Sunflare Phoenix and Yavimaya Phoenix have. It does neither have the swiftful power of chandra's phoenix or flamewake phoenix. What Sacred phoenix have is stability through offense. it is a simple flyer that attacks for value but it makes sure that your spells are not wasted and you'll get that last value that you so much need.
    It does not reward you for playing it. It gives you a decision when you would otherwise have few or even none.

    oh and this card is the only one of the top 3 that had flavour text :3

    Remember that these rankings are made based on my own perspective and validation so a card that i may consider lackluster may be another persons piece of the holy grail. it is however just a fun contest. Thank you all for your participation and congratulations to the winners and honorable mentions.
