Howdy! Sorry I haven't been on in a while. I have a trillion and one other projects going on. I LOVE the anthropomorphic character idea, and in a world of emotion and fantasy, they don't seem very odd. Also, could the five "Tod's" be a cycle?
A Tod cycle would be pretty great XD Maybe the birth cycles of dragons are tied to the waxing and waning of the Muses' power? So new dragons born is a sign of the Muses' return, and therefore a good omen?
nice! i was thinking of a story idea: The muses have ruled for generations over art, but people are starting to question them, to break out into creativity. might fit with the renaissance theme, it was an artistic "revolution"
@kandra127, I like the idea of a literal and figurative revolution, but I think we've agreed that the Muses are what induce creativity in the sentient races of Rezatta, not stifle it.
@kandra127, that's also a good idea. It came up before with my suggestion of a cult/secret association led by an evil 'walker who wanted to harness the power of the Muses for themselves, with the help of either a hedron from Zendikar, part of Innistrad's silver moon, or another extraplanar artifact. What 'new ways' did you have in mind?
not sure, but you gave me an idea. What about a walker who is a cultist of the Eldrazi, trying to use the muses' magic to free Emrakul from innistrad's moon?
Troy Howell also has a few furries. He did the art for the red wall series.
I think only at least one of the main characters needs to be a planeswalker. Maybe a trio of main character and the other two are secondary? Stories with five mains are usually kinda rough.
@kandra127 The artistic revolution idea sounds interesting but it makes the Muses feel a little close to just regular Gods in my opinion. I'd say we can't bring up Emrakul in the conversation outside of an Innistrad block considering the current state of the story, it would be quite odd. Arr' Tar is a good example of how it would become odd mechanically as well very quickly, it would get no support from the set it's in, you would basically need to play it in a Zendikar deck if you wanted it to matter.
How do the muses work? What is the main story? Who are the main characters? Is there a religion?
I think everyone should be trying to peg these. My vote Is that Muses presence causes bigger emotions and therefore revolutionary thinking and art. I think we should have less than five characters. A mute blue character seems more or less decided on. I recommend a Caravaggio based black character, so a rough around the edges art prodigy. A sculptor seems right to include too if we're having music and painting so thatd be the third one and final I'd recommend. I disagree with the Aven idea. I push that this could be the white gorgon lithomancer I'm craving. I think the main story could be these three becoming art prodigies and, because greatness brings trouble, they find themselves tied up in being protectors of Rezatta. I still think worship of ideals seems most in flavor.
From the overall discussion on the antropomorphized characters, they actually seem to be quite appreciated ^^ They could be a way to promote the Humanism theme of the set, and they do give a unique look to the world which is something any custom set is struggling to achieve. Let's say we try them for now ^^

Now that we've shared some introductory thoughts and that we're starting to head towards the core of the story once again, let's try to brainstorm efficiently on the two main topics we still need to tackle: nature of the story and characters.
How about we share some compelling character ideas first? This way, the story could come just from putting two opposite characters in a situation where they have to work together for instance ^^ Or just telling how they fight each other if it's a two-sided conflict.
To get more interesting characters that could make more interesting stories, I propose a little game. This is an excerpt from a D&D PNJ characters sheet. How about we take inspiration from that?
I'm especially interested in the "Ideal / Bond / Flaw" lines that define what the character wants, how to befriend them and what weakness you can exploit to get something from them.
Here's one try:
Avinzi
Avinzi is a planeswalker from Rezatta. He likes to visit other worlds from time to time to get inspiration for some of his most astonishing inventions. He's a talented artist as well as a brilliant scientist which can make him a bit difficult to follow at times. Or maybe he's just a bit crazy. Still, he's recognized as one of the most accomplished geniuses of Rezatta's whole History. One thing's for sure, once Avinzi has an idea, he will stop to nothing to fulfill his vision.
Ideal—There's no problem without a solution. Bond—I like to collect really weird artifacts with oddly specific purposes. Flaw—I don't like to talk about my wife, yes the unwordly beautiful one with the egnimatic smile. I also don't like to talk about my research to make everlasting living art pieces. No, those two things have nothing to do with each other. Stop asking.
@shadow123 I think we’ve talked about that a little bit. If my memory serves me correctly, we never really did come to a conclusion on that, though. In any case, Gatewatch fatigue is definitely a thing.
@shadow123 So far we haven't brought them up in the story, but anything can still happen. It could be cool to have an existing planeswalker visit Rezatta, from the Gatewatch or not ^^ My take on this is that we shouldn't do anything that could contradict the official story. For instance, let's say we have Saheeli show up randomly as a tourist, then I think we shouldn't make her turn evil and black-aligned or just kill her in that case.
Machiabrelli is the most influent political advisor of the Corte Magnifica, the royal court. He is ready to use any means necessary to advance his political agenda, which often include deceit, murder, and zombies. He knows how to hide his ways behind elegant and polite manners. Nobody would really suspect that such a refined old man has a tendancy to solve political problems through dark magic. Still, there are some innocent souls that cannot be fooled. As such, wherever he goes babies start to cry, dogs start to bark and cats start to hiss as soon as he enters the room.
Ideal—The end justifies the mean. Bond—I'm an amateur of good poetry, I myself wrote several plays. Flaw—I am drawn to power and money to the extent that I often live my life through the actions of other more powerful people.
And this is another random character idea. This one has a bit of plot concepts in its description as well, as it could be interesting to have an inanimated object be the character that touches a Grand Muse and suddendly sparks.
The Armor
The Silent Princess is a fragile thing that needs to be protected. As such, she is constantly guarded by this magical armor that always stays at her side. The armor is empty, it's simply so magnifically crafted that it has been infused with life by the magic of the plane. It can be a little blunt with guests at time but it's just doing its job. Towards the end of the story, the Armor sacrifices itself to save the princess jumping straight through the Grand Muse of Love. Surprisingly, it started to feel Love even though it's just a metal armor. The surge of emotion made it sentient enough that it sparked and became a paneswalker. It seems it is now in love with the Silent Princess somehow.
Ideal—I must protect the princess. Bond—I must protect the princess. Flaw—I must protect the princess.
So what is the lore so far bc I found this art of a Baloth charging through a city...and since I recall something about the muses missing we could have it so animals are no longer peaceful and out to kill and stuff to add a darker twost
@DoctorFro We're figuring out the lore, you can propose basically anything ^^ Don't hesitate to post illustrations that you think are really inspiring!
@shadow123 Sure, anything is possible ^^ If we want Tamiyo in, we probably need a weird moon of some sort. Good Tamiyo illustrations seem to be quite hard to find though. Also blue planeswalkers are more difficult because the only planeswalker we've pretty sure we want is Da Vinci, and he's probably going to be blue-based himself.

Redwall! A younger me was unhealthily obsessed with that series. I still own all 22 books XD

Can Tamiyo visit this plane? I’m just thinking that this is the kind of plane that suits her and I like tamiyo a lot.
