@SpiritDragon I could see it, being mute probably means being very reserved which fits the feel we're trying to hit with the Blue Muse. Admitting we're going with some kind of church dedicated to the Muses, it could make sense. But once again in this scenario we're really breaking a strong barrier between Gods and Muses, which is like the number one rule we set to ourselves with the Muses of Emotions
Without going as far as making her a priestess for the reason above, I could definitely see her having a strong connection with the Blue Muse of Fears ^^
Gonna sound like God territory here for a sec, but maybe the muses don't interact with, for lack of a better comparative term, mortal beings very often. As so people take it upon themselves to be the muses' "voice" either out of sheer zealotry or an attempt to further their own agenda.
How should the Church of Rezatta feel like? - What do they worship? Polytheist vs. Monotheist? - Is it a good Church, a corrupted Church, or something in the middle? - Are they the only Church or are there other religions? - On a scale to Amonkhet Gods to real-life religion's Gods, how tangible are their God(s)? - How imaginary should it feel: Are we trying to recreate the feel of christianism during Renaissance or are we making a really different religion that's just loosely reminiscent of actual Renaissance religions? - What's the imagery of this Church? Think things like the super-colourful stained glass on cards located on Benalia in the new Dominaria set for instance ^^ - How can we make it special?
Here are some random ideas on the matter:
- I truly feel we should cement the "Muses are not Gods, are not considered like it, and the religion of Rezatta is not based on them."
- If we have Muses that are not considered Gods, I think it makes more sense for the religion to be something purely spiritual, not directly linked to something you can see, so I'd be in for a monotheist religion with a God that never appears.
- Another possibility is to have a Religion around nature and spring? The Church of Spring, or the Psylian Church if Psylia represents the Renaissance transition of the Muses cycle.
- With a Church of Spring, we can probably manage to have the "religious" cards have a cohesive and original identity based on nature ^^ Here's just an idea:
- Having the Church being villainous is also an option though I'm not sure it really fits the set, I'd rather avoid it because religion as a major source of inspiration for art in Renaissance, so it fits better to have something reasuring as a Church I think.
- One knob we could twitch is 100% female knights and/or 100% male angels, just to add more originality to the set since we have so few knobs we can play with.
@ningyounk, I think the Church of Rezatta should be monotheistic and worship a distant god. It should be middlingly corrupt and try to restrict other forms of worship.
@SpiritDragon, pretty much XD I think a theme we can use to great effect is the Church's control of many artists. There are those who accept patronage from the Church on the condition that their art is censored, and those who reject the authority of the Church and are therefore attacked.
I have always ascribed to the idea that the church is more like a philosophical body. Here artists and farmers could gather under a cathedral roof to talk of the beauty of the universe, debate over the innate goodness or badness of men, find the meaning in a godless world, and overall try to find ways to better themselves and attain happiness. The spirit of self reflection and self improvement provided by philosophy seems closer to why the Renaissance was important to history and what separates it from other time periods than making religious art.
So far, people seem to prefer the idea of a very classical type of church with a mix of good and bad in it. I'd say this means we go strong on the angels and demons? We can't have straight up christianity though (MTG doesn't do actual religion.) We need something that looks like the Church of Serra on Dominaria, with a little twist. Any ideas?
Unlike other planes, angels are not made. They are people who become angels. We could tie that partly to the Reborn mechanic? Actually, this also means a Rezatta angel could have a planeswalker spark (we were discussing an aven character, maybe an angel character could be cool as well.)
@ASubtleGhost Yes, except writing the Angel subtype rider is going to be pretty tedious, so I'm not sure we can show that on more than one card. Should we consider using "Angel" instead of "Reborn"? I feel that prevents us from doing more tropes but I'm still asking. Also, I'd expect an Angel to fly, which may cause gameplay problems if we do that on multiple cards. So here's the question: Would you find it weird if only one card show that process of becoming an Angel through Rebirth? How about multiple cards showing the "Angelification" but with different gameplay?
@ningyounk, I think that turning Rebirth into an Angel-ification mechanic would be great! As for the expectation of flying, I think it might work as long as we emphasize that the word Angel has an unconventional meaning in this set.
I like the idea of an angel lord or two in the set. I think it is okay to only have one card that becomes flying (Tells a story in one card) or perhaps an enchantment like:
"In the Arms of the Angels" 3UW Enchanment Reborn creatures you control get +1/+1, have flying, and are an angel in addition to their other types.
Angelic {3}{r}{r} ({3}{r}{r}, Exile this nonreborn creature: Return it to the battlefield reborn with two +1/+1 counters on it. If this creature does not have flying, it gains flying. Use angelic only as a sorcery.)
Well I guess we can at least try it since people seem interested in the idea of having Rebirth tranform creatures into Angels ^^ I do think Rebirth could use a little flavour boost to better convey what it represents and that's definitely a way to do it. Before we even playtest this though, we should probably try a few concept cards and see how the flavour transpires. I'd like to answer a few things: - Do people notice that the creature comes back as an angel? - Is it cutting other design space? - Does it look weird on non-flying creatures?
@shadow123 Changing the name to Angelic would undercut the role of this mechanic. Basically, we're a little light on Renaissance tropes to use at common except for art, so we need a mechanic that screams "THIS IS A RENAISSANCE SEEEEEEET!!" to your face. It litterally translates into "Renaissance" for that reason. This set doesn't need a mechanic that shows angelification, this would go in an Angel tribal set for instance ^^
Here are a bunch of concept cards exploring different flavours of Rebirth:
1) Becoming an angel. 2) Becoming famous. 3) Changing after an emotional trauma. 4) Changing job. 5) Changing life after having made a significant discovery. 6) Repenting for your past mistakes. 7) Getting healthy again.
I'd say "Reborn" is the marker that has the most flexibility, it works with most of the examples above though I'd say it's a bit weird with becoming famous and changing life after a significant discovery.
"Legendary" works especially well with stories about characers becoming famous, making a significant discovery, but it does cut the design space of basically anything else.
"Angel" obviously is perfect for becoming an angel, I'd say it works fine with the emotional trauma, repenting for past mistakes and getting healthier while not so much with becoming famous, changing job and making an important discovery.
I did feel like making the angelification example without an Art angel, and putting flying on it was going to get super weird. I'm not sure people would get it.
@shadow123 That's more a concept for the design thread than the creative thread But I like the idea, it also made me realize that Compose + Deal N damage to every nonart creature could be a really cool sweeper because it synergizes so well (either you destroy all blockers and get the damage through or the remaining blockers are damaged and probably don't want to block anymore.)
@ningyounk I think Rebirth should be worded, "[cost]: Exile this non-Angel creature and return it to the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it. It becomes an Angel in addition to its other types. Rebirth only as a sorcery." It's wordier, but I can't think of another way to make the creature an angel.
@MagicChess Yes, for the examples above the idea is that you need to replace reborn with either legendary or angel in the reminder text ^^
For the templating, if we want to be thorough it should probably follow the template of Monstrosity:
Rebirth COST (If this creature isn't an angel, exile it then return it to the battlefield with two +1/+1 counters on it and it becomes an angel in addition to its other types. Activate only as a sorcery.)

First, why is it "Sculptors" instead of "Sculptor?"
Personally, I'm a big fan of the first concept. Maybe just making it an Artifact in addition to its other types would be enough?
anyone else see this?

The church during that time period bribed the entire world.

Angel instead of Reborn seems pretty neat to me. Maybe even moreso without flying...

I'll follow that thought on the Design thread because I think it could be important for the set --> http://forums.mtgcardsmith.com/discussion/comment/107069#latest
