  • Good question. I actually want this to be true to Magics History, and we have done that, but set in modern day as if it was released in our day. So equipment and vehicles are good. I originally wanted to flush out banding with this so banding would be part of the dungeons mechanic. I don't think that is possible. Banding is too...confusing. One question is, can a band be formed for no reason at all? Or can it only be formed once before combat? I would hope it is once before combat.

Is there a way to make banding modern? If you can help with that as a side quest that would be awesome just to make me happy.

As is, I am very happy with leaving banding behind and what we have done. I like all the cards we have picked. Today I searched for a goblin orc wizard working as a team to cast red's instant but didn't find any art I liked.
  • So were we doing 40/40/40 or 40/40/20 ?
  • The target for the set is 40/40/40/0. We have the first two done. The rares are maybe halfway there.

I have put up a number of new candidates at rare including a cycle of rare Enchant World cards. Here are all the candidates. https://mtgcardsmith.com/user/Scott_Anderson/sets/30412

Banding. Let's see what I can dig up for us to look at.
  • Banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

From the Comprehensive Rules (Dominaria (April 27, 2018))

    702.21. Banding
702.21a Banding is a static ability that modifies the rules for combat.
702.21b “Bands with other” is a special form of banding. If an effect causes a permanent to lose banding, the permanent loses all “bands with other” abilities as well.
702.21c As a player declares attackers, they may declare that one or more attacking creatures with banding and up to one attacking creature without banding (even if it has “bands with other”) are all in a “band.” They may also declare that one or more attacking [quality] creatures with “bands with other [quality]” and any number of other attacking [quality] creatures are all in a band. A player may declare as many attacking bands as they want, but each creature may be a member of only one of them. (Defending players can’t declare bands but may use banding in a different way; see rule 702.21j.)

702.21d All creatures in an attacking band must attack the same player or planeswalker.
702.21e Once an attacking band has been announced, it lasts for the rest of combat, even if something later removes banding or “bands with other” from one or more of the creatures in the band.
702.21f An attacking creature that’s removed from combat is also removed from the band it was in.
702.21g Banding doesn’t cause attacking creatures to share abilities, nor does it remove any abilities. The attacking creatures in a band are separate permanents.
702.21h If an attacking creature becomes blocked by a creature, each other creature in the same band as the attacking creature becomes blocked by that same blocking creature.
Example: A player attacks with a band consisting of a creature with flying and a creature with swampwalk. The defending player, who controls a Swamp, can block the flying creature if able. If they do, then the creature with swampwalk will also become blocked by the blocking creature(s).

702.21i If one member of a band would become blocked due to an effect, the entire band becomes blocked.

702.21j During the combat damage step, if an attacking creature is being blocked by a creature with banding, or by both a [quality] creature with “bands with other [quality]” and another [quality] creature, the defending player (rather than the active player) chooses how the attacking creature’s damage is assigned. That player can divide that creature’s combat damage as they choose among any number of creatures blocking it. This is an exception to the procedure described in rule 510.1c.
702.21k During the combat damage step, if a blocking creature is blocking a creature with banding, or both a [quality] creature with “bands with other [quality]” and another [quality] creature, the active player (rather than the defending player) chooses how the blocking creature’s damage is assigned. That player can divide that creature’s combat damage as they choose among any number of creatures it’s blocking. This is an exception to the procedure described in rule 510.1d.
702.21m Multiple instances of banding on the same creature are redundant. Multiple instances of “bands with other” of the same kind on the same creature are redundant.
  • I wonder if there is a non-keyworded ability we can write up that would do the same thing but be less confusing?
  • I thought about making a token creature card that represents attacking or blocking bands. The rules almost follow it. I'll show you, but first I'm thinking about this for the contest:

    image image
  • Should I post that princess for the contest? I laughed when I saw it because it was so under powered. I tried to make it playable-ish.
  • I think your Lucretia is great! It’s an interesting use of alternate casting cost and in today’s game, not too strong to see print.

I did some thinking about banding. If you want to see banding in the set then let’s put it in the set! We don’t have to do reminder text.

I think Wary Traveler is a perfect card for Banding. There ought to be one or more Banding cards (for flavor) and maybe one Bands With card for extra flavor.

What cards can you see that could do with Banding or Bands With?
  • edited May 2018
I can't believe you are on board with this lol. Yes I think Wary Traveler would be a great Banding card. Her flavor sounds like she would group up with anyone to get where she is going safely.

If you are okay with banding let me post some older cards I had made:

    image

Nothing to do with banding but:

    image

Do you think this should be a rare?

Another Rare I made a while ago:

    image

She doesn't have banding but she has an activation effect related to banding:
    image

It wouldn't fit well in the set but I have a white dwarf that does something when in a band and a blue one.

Not banding, but maybe I could re-make this for rare?

    image
  • By the way, do you think the token "BAND" help explain what the power of the band is? does band work that way? The Band can be blocked by one creature but it does a lot of damage? So if one creature blocks the band the one creature is taking all the damage in the band?
  • Banding is almost always a white ability. Some lands mention it and some artifacts have it. A couple of green cards have it and the Nalanthi Dragon promo card in red. So it should in be white or on an artifact creature. Maybe a green card could get “bands with Thallids” or something.

    Cards:

    Warlord yes! Maybe new name.

    Hiding thrull yes!

Tetra Gold feels just goofy enough to be from Legends. Maybe you can rename her after a dwarf in the FE story?

    Vodalian Scout yes!

Banding token: well, Banding has three key parts to it.
    1) the player with creatures that are banding controls how damage is assigned
    2) if a creature can block any attacker in a band, then it can block the whole band.
    3) any number of banding creatures plus up to one without banding can form a band.

That’s a lot to put on any card.

  • The goal with the token creature that represents a band is just a visual. I think it could help explain what is going on if a player unfamiliar with banding has it used against him. I'm not sure tho, but for some reason I would think something like that would help if MTG every brought banding back.

Do you think Tourach Beckons could be a rare? I will work on these for our rares.
  • I'm not sure who warlord should be. Do you know of any orcs with proper names from fallen?
  • The Tourach card could be the last black rare, yes. It’s a good card with some splash.

There are no names orcs nor any dragons in fallen empires. Not a problem; there’s no reason why Warlord has to be named, or named for a FE character. We could leave it generic or give it a name and Legend status.

I really like token cards. We should include a Banding marker.

I gave you the template for the blue scout card on it’s card page.
  • The dwarf: Captain Sarya Haasendel

She would be a Legendary Creature - Dwarf Soldier

She is the one who sent for help when the orc-goblin army overran Achtep Keep. Only Thurzen Klaade from the Order of th Ebon Hand sent help; but it was Iyra, who switched sides.

  • Do you really dislike Morgan? I can make a different card but I think he's good.

  • I thought I liked him. He is a very good card. I can make changes around lunch time tomorrow on the blue scout.
  • I have been updating our Rares file. Here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1o7fhvwb5upd9XfNSu2x1Ek6UJD-ZJoxb/view?usp=sharing

We need a few more interesting cards to put at rare. They don't have to be OP, just interesting. I'd like to get a Bethan Leitbur card in there but I don't know what to make for him yet.

    Here is what we need:

3 total artifact or land cards
    2 white cards
    3 blue cards
    2 red cards
    1 green card.

Here are some cards that I have thought up. Maybe you will like some. But please please send me links to the cards you have made that you want to put at rare!

  • Sorry for the slow work. Speaking of work I've been actually busy at my job. A bit annoying actually, but educational. I had our antivirus migrated but had over a 100 errors. To fix them I needed to make scripts and run a group policy but I'm not that techy so I had to get help. I'm nearly finished with all of it so things will go back to the normal slow crawl like it normally is. I know I said I would get some cards fixed today but I couldn't get to it. I also had a kindergarten concert to go to, fun and lots of pictures.
  • @hinges don’t worry. I am eager but I don’t mean to make you feel rushed or like this isn’t any fun. I’m glad real life is going well.

Here is one suggestion for the Leitbur card. He's not hexproof to black. I'm not sure that's necessary.

    image

Here is another suggestion - a wise old holy man rather than a young fighter.

    image

The storyline suggests that Oliver Farrel and his men were frustrated because the Order of Leitbur wasn't militant enough and didn't wage war against the Ebon Hand as aggressively as Farrel would like. That's why in both cases, I made a guy who wasn't a normal "high priest" type or military general.

Do you think either of these are correct, or do you have a different vision?
  • I want to share the reminder text for banding. Maybe if it fits on a token you could make that token?

Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding a player controls are blocking or being blocked by a creature, that player divides that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.
  • I like both version of Bethan. I'm leaning towards the younger just because I like the key players from fallen to be in their youth when able. I like the old guy for the banding tokens lol. I like that a lot.
  • edited May 2018
    Hey! Welcome back!

I like both, too. The banding tokens are on the more-militant, younger Bethan. We can use that one.
  • So they are lol. I like him very much. The older one is cool with absorb, but I very much like the first one.
  • Great. Also noticed you working on more cards. Will keep track.
