@TenebrisNemo are we going to know who got knocked out? And if that happens tonight would it be too much to ask if we could find out our match one pairings
Last pre-tournament story (corresponding to April 29): V. Last Day Coltras began training again at 6 with Kift, Roland, and Sunex. He was learning the fighting styles of the efreet and imp and how to beat them. Roland was actually fighting him now instead of just helping him practice the deflection spell. Coltras deflected three out of four bullets before clubbing Roland with his staff. Then they both collapsed, waiting for Kift and Sunex to finish. "I'm still confused about why you use guns in your world. Can't you just use lighting bolts or something?" asked Coltras. "We don't have that power. There's little magic left in my world." Coltras suddenly had an idea. "Have you ever heard of mana?" "No." "The magical energy of the land that people use to cast spells?" "No." "How about planeswalkers? Aether? Spells? Mages?" "None of it." Coltras was in awe. "Roland, I doubt your world is in this multiverse." Roland shrugged, unimpressed. "My quest for the Dark Tower has sent me to many places." Coltras said, "No. You don't understand. In a different multiverse, the Dark Tower doesn't even apply . In our multiverse, there are a bunch of planes separated by a void called the Blind Eternities, filled with an energy called aether. Certain beings called planeswalkers can travel between different planes. But in another multiverse, the concept of a plane or mana might not even exist..." Roland looked into the distance, his eyes on the horizon.
After training, Coltras fought with Koorir for a while, resulting in his first victory against the minotaur, acheived by casting ineffective spells just to charge his staff. After they left the training grounds, Coltras looked at the others training, noting strengths and weaknesses, like how Tai was bad at swordfighting. After that, he went to bed. The tournament started tomorrow.
When the evening sun began descending behind the cloudy ocean horizon, a soldier in light iron armor marched outside from the mansion. He climbed onto a brown horse and trotted with it to the tavern's direction, where only the contenders and tournament guards spend time. Tavern regulars and maids were having a day off.
It didn't take many minutes until his horse was standing in front of the tavern. The young soldier took an engraved horn from his belt and blew into it. The loud sound which came from the horn took the attention of every single being within the tavern and nearby it. As humans, elves, merfolk, and many other creatures walked outside, peered from the windows, or from behind the building corners, the soldier began to speak loudly.
"Contenders of the seventeenth tournament! The time has come! Lord Gaspar is awaiting you in the mayor's mansion!"
Those whose names have been written into the registration list ventured into the large mansion. Countless guards in shining armors were standing in straight postures and watching from a small distance as the contenders arrived to the main hall. Golden chandelier's candles and the smaller candles in pillars and walls lit the great hall. Clouds which were moving in front of the sunset's rays cast a shadow onto the mansion and into the hall through the large windows. The large dining tables and chairs have been moved aside except for one chair at the back of the hall, which was placed in front of a lit fireplace. Lord Gaspar was sitting on that chair. He was looking at the contenders, who were forming a line in the middle of the hall. When everyone had found their place, Gaspar stood up and started walking towards them while his hands were behind his back.
"Congratulations, contestants. You've all been given permission to fight in the seventeenth tournament of champions! When the hosts decided to hold a tournament which would consist of thirty-two contenders, I really wasn't given much of choices when it came to elimination," Gaspar said while laughing sarcastically. The judge was walking from left to right while looking at every contender into their eyes.
"Even though you're all in the tournament, there is another matter which you should know. Due to the enormous amount of contenders we have this year, we have decided to hold the first sixteen matches of the tournament in Eternstor. None of our ship is large enough to keep all of you within them, and the tournament city is too small for over sixteen contestants. That is why we will begin the tournament in this city instead. Once sixteen of you have fought and won in the matches we're going to hold here, we will take the winners to the home of the tournaments. Those who lose will be taken out from the tournament and are not allowed to come with us."
Gaspar walked back to his chair and sat down onto it. "Tomorrow, your positions in the matches will be randomized and the first match will be held. Two of you will fight in that match and only one will win. Go back to the tavern and sleep through the night. We will inform you the location of the first match on morning. Remember; only one of you will become a true champion, so make yourselves to be worthy of that title. Now, off you go."
The contenders left the hall and returned to the tavern. When the doors closed, the judge was still sitting at the chair while his head was leaning onto his right hand.
"How did it go... Oh right. 'Our heroes will never die as long as we have faith in them.'"
Your contestants are now officially in the tournament of champions. Because there was 33 contenders, one was destined to be knocked out. But since Mariko ( @Corwinnn ) gave up her spot, there was no need for judge Gaspar in knockout competition.
The first 16 matches of the tournament will be held in Eternstor. When those matches have been held and the 32 contestants have decreased to 16, they will be brought to the tournament city. After a victorious match, your contestant grows stronger and you must create a 2nd stage version of them.
Roland watched the sun set, a brooding orange on the horizon. The tournament would begin soon, and with it blood, death, and triumph. From what he had seen, he liked his chances. Men, women, all sorts of taheen (a man with a bulls head!) were competing. All were clearly skilled at sorcery or combat, and sometimes both. Roland had befriended and trained with a group of them since he had arrived.
Upon their first meeting, Roland sensed that the mage Coltras was trying to read his mind. Naturally, he fed the man some bogus answers, but one sprang unbidden to his lips. "I was seeking the Dark Tower, the nexus of all universes, but when I found it my memory of the journey was erased and I had to start over." The mage was clearly searching for answers and didn't implant the thought in his mind, but obviously the statement was preposterous.
He had trained with Coltras, Kift (some sort of shapeshifting fire-man), and the bull-headed one. The others were amazed at his speed and accuracy with his guns. Roland was amazed he could even shoot and draw that poorly--ever since he had been arrived he had been severely handicapping himself, only shooting with his left hand and firing at what seemed to him as a morbidly slow pace. The contestants would find out his true skills in due time.
Coltras had even suggested that this place was outside The Tower. How ridiculous? Roland thought back to the Man In Black's fateful words in the golgotha. "Size encompasses life, and the Tower encompasses size". Regardless of how many-verses there were, Roland was sure that the tower was the nexus of them all.
And the power of The Tower was undeniable here as well. On the second day, Roland had awoken in his stark room at the tavern to three surprises. Several bottles of Rosa's cat oil for his creaking joints, the Horn of Eld itself (oh, Cuthbert, Roland thought), and most incredibly of all, his right hand, fully formed, unblemished, and good as new. He had observed no other champions receiving such boons, but none of them fought for The Dark Tower.
Roland watched the sun set, a brooding orange. It was good, he thought, that the sun shone here today. Tomorrow would the clouds would only bring blood.

"Hahahha!" A dulcet laugh flitted through the tavern.
"Did you hear that?" Ronnie stammered to Pele. "Tell me I'm not the only one who does!"
The laugh came again.
Pele calmly told Ronnie that it sounded like Mariko. After a moments pause she became a bit confused; "Shouldn't Mariko be gone? I mean, she withdrew from the tournament, right?"
"Don't look at me." Ronnie whispered as he hurriedly hid himself among his sheets and pillows. "I don't like the sound of it and I don't want to know who's making it."
*Mariko peeked in through an open door and waved to Pele then motioned her to be quiet. Pele's eyes told her that it was Mariko, just as it seemed, fanning herself with her ornate heirloom, but it wasn't like her at all to laugh aloud like she'd been. Mariko was characteristically silent and didn't talk much at all. As *Mariko made her way over to Ronnie's hidden form, Tai's wings rustled in her sleep and awoke Sylva who was laying nearby.
"I wish there was more room in this tavern and we didn't all have to sprawl out on the floorboards" Sylva began as she sat up, "Mariko! Is that you!?"
Ronnie jumped at this and ran out of the room still covered in sheets.
"Just because he's a young boy doesn't mean they should've placed him in with the ladies , what do they think we are, mothers?" *Mariko laughed again, waking the roomful of female contestants.
Pele addressed *Mariko directly "This isn't like you, why all the chatter? You've woken us all up and we need our rest! Can you please tell us what you're even doing here after you'd withdrawn from the competition?"
@bnew07 Sorry, I thought that Roland remembers all of his previous journeys to the Dark Tower each time he arrives. (I haven't actually read the Dark Tower books.)
@ShaperKyon no worries at all. In the books, his memory is erased every time. My story was actually more interesting because our the mistake, so it was a happy accident.
Tai hurried out the door and barged into her friends room.
“Wake Up! Wake Up!” Tai yelled excitedly.
“Leave me alone,” Pele said, “I’m tired.”
It was a bit too public because her loud voice reached every room on the floor.
“Wha?” “Wow!” “Cool!” “Huh?”
They hurried outside and checked the list.
“We’re on!” the trio yelled.
Pele walked in and saw the list. “I’m in!”
Tai and her friends hurried out to the training field, eager to train and they saw that all of them were filled. There was intense training going on, but one stood out to her. Tourach. Tourach was very powerful but as she attacked, Tai could see the sorrow she suffered. It was dangerous magic.
“C’mon,” Sylva said, “Secret training field time.”
Tai, Sylva, Nya, and Pele raced to the cave and in. They arrived at the training ground. To their surprise, it wasn’t empty. There was a girl staring at the crystal water.
“Mariko,” Tai called.
She didn’t turn.
“Mariko!” Pele yelled.
“What?”
“Well...” Sylva trailed.
“I’m not in the tournament.”
“Why? You’re great!” Tai said sadly.
“I gave it up.” Mariko said, “Goddess Friyena is disappointed in me, as my people at home as well. I just don’t know what to do!”
This was the first time Mariko showed emotion. Crystal tears drifted down her snow white skin.
Tai said, “I know what it’s like. I’m an outcast at home. You’ll fit in soon. If they make any trouble, I got something for you.”
Tai handed her a small box of sleep powder. They heard footsteps. There were two soldiers arguing.
“He should do-”
The other cut him off with, “No! We should attack from land! They won’t expect it.”
“These grounds are hidden.” The first said.
Mariko sprang out of the bushes, and took two twigs shaping them to a small dagger.
“We’re not alone buddy.”
They turned.
Mariko opened her fan and sliced through the air. Mariko was swift and quick as every move had a purpose. The fan produced a light that hid her exact position and she would quickly attack. Within minutes, the two soldiers were knocked out.
“Before you leave, can we train?”
“Sure. Why not?”
They engaged in fierce training. Tai flung powder at the sand, shrouding her image.
“I can se pretty well Tai.” Mariko said confidently.
Mariko threw her dagger and it hit Tai’s Head. Luckily, it was the flat side. The sharp side cut her wing and Mariko lunged with her fan. Tai whipped out her rose. They clashed with a resounding clang. Nya and Sylva gasped. Tai lunged, but Mariko parried. Mariko dodged her next assault and kicked Tai. Tai tried to lunge again. Mariko parried. If Tai could steal that fan, Mariko would be defenseless. Mariko lunged this time, but Tai sprayed some black powder at her. Mariko pushes it aside with blows from her fan. This time Pele gasped. Tai spun and slammed Mariko in the head with her rose. Then, she snatched Marikoks fan. Mariko just got up and found her dagger. She fought Tai easily disarming her and she jumped high and plummeted down at Tai using the move known as the Flying Crane. Tai tossed her green powder into the air, creating a swarm of Faeries. They overwhelmed Mariko and at that moment, Tai knew her weakness. Tai lunged, and quickly sprayed some black powder.
“Whoa,” Sylva said. “This is intense.”
Terrifying Memories flooded into Mariko’s Head. This fueled her. She shouted for the first time and knocked Tai out with one kick. Then, she collapsed. Nya healed them.
@bnew07 I know that Roland's memory is erased each time he has to start over; I just thought his memory of previous trips is restored when he arrives at the Tower, but erased again when he has to start over.
Zintius was filled with joy at the word that he was in the tournament. He knew that this tournament could cure him, whether he died or survived to grow to a power to cure himself. He went outside for the first time that night, and practiced some combat moves. As the sun began to rise, he went back inside and rested once more.
