@shadow123 & @Everyone_else - My apologies for having been absent for a few days. These past times have been extremely busy for me, and whenever I got back to this site, it's been late and I did not have enough energy to focus on the tournament. But now that summer is here, I hope that you carry on with me as I try to wrap this tournament into an enjoyable competition. )
A few minutes after the announcement of the match's start, Callum was running through the dense woods of the forest arena with his wolf companion, Lupa. The white wolf was not interested in feasting with the rancid mutton which Lobberknot had found among the trash and thrown at the wolf at the beginning of the match. After that ineffective trick, the goblin had ran deeper into the woods, and now the druid competitor was searching for his tiny opponent.
After running slightly farther away from the area, where the audience was, Callum looked at Lupa. The wolf cub was sniffing the ground and the air, smelling the goblin's presence nearby. Its snout was pointing towards an old, large tree in the distance with many holes, where any full-grown goblin could fit and hide.
"Good work, Lupa," Callum whispered as he knelt down next to the wolf and stroke its fur. "Now check the surroundings of the tree as I go and search for our opponent in there. Make sure the goblin does not escape."
Callum gestured at the old tree with his right hand. Lupa understood perfectly what its druidic master wanted. The wolf ran behind the large old tree within seconds. It took Callum a minute to reach the tree as he walked and pushed aside plants and the branches of the trees. When he got there, he could see that the wide tree indeed was very old. It had no leaves, because the upper half was missing. Nevertheless, all that was remaining of the tree was still taller than some of the other ones in the forest.
Suddenly, a loud whine stopped Callum's train of thoughts. The druid recognized the sound, and he immediately started to run at the other side of the tree. After a few seconds, he saw Lupa lying on the forest ground.
"Lupa!"
Callum ran next to the wolf, fell onto his knees, and stared at his injured companion. Its white fur was red around the thing that was sticking out at its side. It was Lobberknot's knife, which the goblin had shown to the audience at the beginning of the match. Callum gritted his teeth and squeezed his hands into fists. Lupa was dying, and it's all thanks to that pesky goblin. Then the druid heard as a branch snapped behind him. He stood up, turned around, and saw Lobberknot, who had that annoying grin on his face.
"Very sad," Lobberknot said. "Sending a little cub after a veteran potato slayer will always end in tragedy!"
"You're mad," Callum said angrily, then he took his staff from his belt. "I will make you pay for what you did to Lupa."
"Don't come any closer! Or you will face the same fate!"
"How would that be possible? Your weapon is out from your reach!"
Lobberknot realized that his potato peeler was still in Lupa's flesh. Callum prepared his druidic magic to control the vines and roots of the forest to crush his tiny opponent. But the goblin wasn't waiting to be killed. He ran past Callum to Lupa while also dodging violent vines and roots that rose from the ground. Then Lobberknot quickly pulled the knife out from Lupa. The wolf whined again when he did so. This angered Callum even more. Lots of plants tried to whip, capture, or pierce the fast goblin at Callum's command.
But Lobberknot was small and extremely fast. He wounded Callum three times as he ran around him, stabbed at both thighs, then he slashed open the druid's left ankle. Callum fell onto his knees and gripped his staff with both hands. He was leaning on it as his legs were bleeding and couldn't use them to stand up. Then Callum raised his head and saw Lobberknot staring at him right before the bleeding druid. The plants stopped moving when Callum fell, which was quite pleasant for the goblin, who was sweaty for running so much.
"I've peeled thousands of potatoes," Lobberknot shouted as he prepared for a final attack. "Peeling one such as you is just a drop in the OCEAN!!"
Before Callum could do anything, Lobberknot's knife had already slashed open the druid's throat. Gargling sound came from his mouth as he collapsed onto the ground. Lobberknot stared at his opponent's lifeless body for a moment while smiling, then the goblin looked at the wolf. Lupa did not live to see his master die. Lobberknot, whose clothes and face were bloodstained, laughed and joyfully started walking to audience's direction.
A tiny moment later, the healers found Callum and Lupa next to the old tree. As they were bringing them back to life, Sir Killian's announcement echoed within the forest.
Lobberknot peeled his way to the 2nd round! You may post his 2nd stage version here anytime before the undetermined deadline, which will be announced after the end of the 1st round.
@KingWatherton - Callum tasted defeat, but you may post his later stages here and write how he grows after the tournament!
Another morning sun rose above Eternstor the next day after the ninth match. Thin cover of clouds blocked out the blue sky from sight, but the sun's rays easily shined through it all the way to the port town and the world around it. People had already begun their daily duties. Tenth match of the seventeenth tournament was approaching, and the two contestants, Mariko and Gyar, were preparing for it in their own ways.
Mariko was walking along a quiet alley between the old buildings of the town, where the sound of the busy docks did not reach. She wanted to find a quiet place, where she could meditate alone. It didn't take long until the alley ended and she was standing on top of a hill next to a street bench with a good view to the docks, the sea, and the high cliffs of the shores. Mariko sat down onto the wooden bench, enjoyed the view for a moment, then closed her eyes and meditated for her fight. Soon the sound of wind and seagulls faded away from around her.
I will fight for my family's honor, and perhaps reach farther than anyone else before.
Sound of footsteps broke the silence around Mariko, then they stopped nearby her. Mariko's eyes were still closed as the person who also wandered to the same place stared at the tournament contestant for a second before talking.
"Wait... Have we met?"
Mariko opened her eyes and turned her head to look at the person standing at the right side from the bench. It was Philibert, the circus ringmaster and the host of the tournament's first round. He had his usual suit, top hat, and walking stick. The young man blinked his eyes and scratched the back of his head.
"Oh, sorry! I thought you were somebody else."
"You thought I was one of my family members?"
Philibert was about to leave, but when Mariko asked that question, he turned to look at her again. "That's right!"
The tournament host walked next to the bench again, and pointed at the it with his right hand. "May I?"
Mariko nodded, then she moved a little to give room for Philibert. The tournament host sat next to the contestant, then he rested his hands on the white walking stick. They both stared at the view as Philibert continued talking.
"I hope I didn't interrupt anything?"
"Nothing important. I was simply meditating..."
"Sorry about that. But you must be Mariko, right? I am-"
"Philibert. Yes... I've heard Koorir talking about you with other contestants at the tavern these past few days."
"He has? I hope he hasn't said anything bad about me!"
"No. He has mostly asked about what is a circus or a ringmaster and only the smarter contestants have been able to enlighten the minotaur. By the way, which family member of mine have you met?"
"I do not remember her name, but you remind me of her. She fought in the fourteenth tournament three years ago, where I participated as well."
"You've fought in this tournament before?"
"Yes! Even though I never fought against your family member, we progressed together until we were both defeated by two different contestants in the second round. The contestant who defeated me eventually became the fourteenth champion. A young, little girl with the ability to summon a powerful beast of the night. She is one of the strongest champions to ever breathe the air of Lisakdonia."
"Lisakdonia... the home kingdom of the tournament of champions."
Philibert nodded. "Correct. A kingdom that is in a world next to this one, where we are now..."
At the distance, the loud dwarf's announcement echoed in the streets of Eternstor. "The match between Mariko the blessed and Gyar the wurm will be held at the lonely shores in two hours!"
Meanwhile, a tournament soldier was riding a brown steed out from the town to the forest area nearby it. He soon saw the giant wurm, coiled and calm, at the forest opening. Next to it was standing the wurm's handler. The young man looked at the soldier, who shouted at him from the distance.
"Oi! Gyar's match will begin in two hours at the lonely shores! Do not miss it!"
The wurm's handler nods and waves to the solider. "Understood!" He whistles sharply. "We better make sure we're not late." He begins walking as the wurm burrows alongside him towards the lonely shores.
The time had come for the tenth tournament match to begin. Midday sun cast light upon the shores of dark and sharp rocks through the white clouds of the sky. Almost every bench of the wooden stands were occupied by civilians, contestants, and tournament hosts. Soldiers stood in their positions and the healers prepared themselves within the white tent next to the audience.
Sir Killian walked onto the podium when he saw that Mariko, Gyar's handler and the wurm itself arrived to the arena just in time. The handler patted Gyar's side before he walked to stand at the edge of the arena, next to a large guard, who was wearing a heavy metal armor and was standing in a straight posture. Sir Killian turned to look at the audience and began his known speech which ended with the saying that was now quite famous among the people of Eternstor.
"... 'Our heroes will never die as long as we have faith in them!'"
Slightly over half of the civilians repeated the same saying. Then Sir Killian raised his right hand at Mariko's direction.
"The woman, whose family has fought in this tournament many times before; Mariko of the Blessed!"
A loud applause and cheer echoed in the shores as Mariko was presented to the audience, She gave them a deep bow. When people calmed down, Sir Killian raised his left hand at Gyar's direction.
"A wurm with an appetite that has been going on for a long time now; Gyar, Consuming Hatchling!"
People clapped for the large wurm that was being quietly still in its position. After the second applause, Sir Killian turned to look at the two contestants and raised his both hands towards them.
"Let the tenth match begin!"
"Now, Gyar," the wurm's handler shouted supportively. "Show them what you can do!"
@doctorfro you have given me an idea. Not an assassin like the job, but sometimes Lobberknot just gets triggered and goes off on someone. I wrote the card and I will make it and post it soon.
@ScottAnderson: you could do what DoctorFro said. Or you could have him want to become a real hero to liberate goblins from all the tyranny and abuse they are subjected to (as was done to him and his brother in the past). Or you could have him become progressively darker.
In any case, I'll keep my eyes peeled for his subsequent development!
This incarnation of Lobberknot illustrates his penchant for sorta hanging around in the back until someone says something that sets him off, at which point he jumps in and goes crazy.
Also note the toad on his head. Her name is Jane II, and she is the wizard Thane's familiar.
( @Bobman111 - Ah. I haven't given the plane a name, but you may call it Estanor if you want.
@Scott_Anderson - @DoctorFro is right. Champions of the 2nd stage need to have CMC of 4 or 5. You need to edit Lobberknot so he is qualified to battle in the next round of the tournament.
I really can't tell how each of your champions should grow. It's all up to their creators. )
@Scott_Anderson It is Jund bc that can be more sadistic and instead of losing Green altogether it is a smoother transition between the two goblins Also try this page for art
@DoctorFro before he was a henchman, he was enslaved in the kitchens of a naughty illusionist. That's why he hates potatoes - it's all he did every day, peeling potatoes.
