  I can't find most of them as png. I have figured out that that is the issue but again, most of them aren't pngs

  png images are what you want. they should have transparent backgrounds on them as well, but it's more that png versions should have a higher resolution. If you can find high resolution images, they'll look nicer even if they are jpg
