@ShaperKyon Think less about what it can do, and more about when it can do it. By your logic, Mana Drain is broken - after all, for 2 mana, you can counter your opponents' best creature and get enough floating mana to potentially play something just as big or bigger to boot.

Your opportunity to play Shadow of Salvation won't always come around. When it does, it is extremely powerful, but there are many mechanics, deck techs, creatures, etc. that either hard counter this or do very well in spite of this on the field.

While strong, I would absolutely not call this broken. It'll be frustrating to have this dropped and destroy your Ghalta, Primal Hunger and Gigantosaur immediately, but if you have more than just that on the battlefield, you can certainly do much more damage before Shadow of Salvation's controller has time to exile whatever else you're swinging with.

If by "on a whim" you mean at the cost of 3 mana and the ability of the creature's ability to attack or block, you are correct on that count.

So no, I strongly disagree - Shadow of Salvation is not broken. On the contrary, its weaknesses make it such that it finds a better home on a sideboard to be swapped in specifically against aggro decks and combo decks.
  • @Fantabulicious
Mana Drain is broken; it's banned in legacy and is one of the two most powerful counterspells in existence.
  • Alright. That's off topic, but maybe I just used a bad example. Supplant Form can potentially bounce a 50/50 with trample, create a 50/50 token creature that is a copy of it, then instantly swing and kill the player that card was copied from, all for just 6 cmc.

Cards with a lot of potential but very situational uses are not broken, just the sort of interesting cards that can change the course of the game in the right hands or do absolutely nothing in the wrong ones.

Back on topic though, here's another entry!

@Fantabulicious For only 4 mana, Shadow of Salvation provides a huge tempo swing. It nets you a total of plus three bodies on the 'field. That's devastating to most creature-based decks, especially later in the game when it can hit stronger creatures. I don't know exactly what "mechanics, deck techs, creatures, etc." you refer to that easily deal with this. Coming down on turn four, this could quell an aggro deck by destroying two attackers and throwing out a chunky blocker. If you can get it down against midrange, it can take out two utility creatures the midrange deck needs to quickly end the game. It's weak against control, which probably doesn't use creatures and won't let the Shadow resolve if it does. So, control decks would likely use this card and become quite (potentially format-warpingly) powerful.

@ShaperKyon You keep bringing up these perfect storms of what it can do, so I am going to assume you missed the point. Certainly, the card could have a marked effect on the format - for what other purpose does an interesting, powerful niche card exist? - but if you are going to keep talking about what it could do, how about you test it in a standard or edh control deck against meta aggro and see how it does? Figure out if the card really is as unconditionally powerful as you appear to think it is.

And while I do think it would probably be best to up the CMC to around 6, I still do not think it is nearly as insane as you do.
  • @Fantabulicious As I am not really able to playtest Shadow of Salvation I guess this discussion is moot.
  • I think I won't be making that heat wave thing. The premise is up for grabs! good luck.
  • OK! TODAY IS JUDGING DAY! THE CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED FOR JUDGING!

Results will be posted either later today or sometime tomorrow.
  • OK! Judging time!

There were so many good entries that there will be 3 Honorable Mentions instead of just one like normal. Those cards are:

    @DeepSky with Illusionary Licid!

    image

Licids are a cool concept, so I had to at least give it a honorable mention. It seems quite powerful, but also balanced if they have something that can target it. Cool card!

    @Faiths_Guide with Dream-Course Crasher!

    image

Honestly, this card seems really underpowered, but it was a hydra (aka my favorite creature type in magic) and it had a cool, if underwhelming, concept! I didn't want it to place, and make people think that all I care about are my favorite creature types, but I wanted to at least give it a HM. Good work!

    And @Arceus8523 with Mistcaller!

    image

This card was going to place until I realized that Mistcaller is actually the name of a real magic card:

    image

DO YOUR RESEARCH! But other than that, it is a really good semi-lord for illusions, and by giving them hexproof, you can get around the whole "targeted by a spell" thing that most illusions have going on. Great job!

Now! On to the cards that placed!

In 3rd Place is @ASubtleGhost with Dream Rider!

    image

Not only does it have my favorite animal in the art, the turtle, but it also is a pretty cool concept. It is like she is riding the illusions, and she fuels illusion tribal decks by creating illusions on entry! Nice work!

In 2nd Place is @zizick123 with Mistform Matron!

    image

This is a really cool concept! It would be good in tribal decks of all sorts, kind of like Metallic Mimic, but only giving protection instead of making them bigger! Overall awesome design!

In 1st Place is @Shadow29870 with Vision of the Sultry!

    image

This thing is really powerful, and will go in all kinds of Izzet decks! Combine the super flavorful ability of making you slowly lose your sanity out in the desert with awesome art and you have one cool card! Awesome job!

@ASubtleGhost @zizick123 @Shadow29870 Don't forget to tell your HM nominees!

Also, nobody forget to tell me what cards they want favorited!
  • RED ILLUSION!!! YEAH!
  • Darn it! I wanted to do the heat wave idea. Oh well, I'll probably make it any way, maybe over the weekend.
  • @Aggroman15 Thanks! Favorite Illusionary Licid please.
  • Congrats winners! Thanks @Aggroman15 for the contest! I would like a like on this https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/duskgold-enforcer

and feel free to leave the other two likes on anything else that you like!

@zizick123 Who would you like to honorably mention?

Also, I favorited Mistform Matron and this one:

  • @ASubtleGhost @Arceus8523 @FaithsGuide Which cards do you want faved?

Also, ASubtleGhost and @zizick123, who would you like to nominate for an honorable mention?
  • Bummer, I wish you'd read the comments on Dream-Course...

He isn't underpowered, he is a non-flying Guard Gomazoa which can attack under certain circumstances and also gets you repeated ETB triggers. He's really pretty sweet!
  • @Faiths_Guide Yeah, I guess that he is pretty cool. But I still stand with my decision, as the standings are already official, so which card do you want faved?
  • @Aggroman15
Oh no, I absolutely agree that you should stand with your decision!

    Congrats @Winners and other @Mentionables!

    Could you fave https://mtgcardsmith.com/view/sincerity-blesser?list=user
  • Drat. Well, I tried.

Congrats to all the winners and hms!
