    Alright, thanks everyone who entered! That additional week was fruitful with three additional entries! :) It's now Sunday everywhere in the world so...

    CONTEST CLOSED FOR JUDGING!
    (FOR GOOD THIS TIME XD)

    The results and detailed feedback will be posted soon =)
  • It's time for the results! =D

    Before I get to the ranking, here are the reviews for all entries. I put the complete card-by card review on a Google Doc at this adress: LINK. Just below you'll find a condensed version with the overall review and potentially one of those little icons:

    ORIGINALITY MEDAL — At least three of your cards did something brand new.
    REALISM MEDAL — At least three of your cards need no change to be used.
    FLAVOUR MEDAL — At least three of your cards had a strong mechanical flavour.
    ELEGANCE MEDAL — At least three of your cards did something especially clever.
    *DING* — You get a *DING* whenever you break one of the contest rules.

    There a few interesting concepts hidden here and there but execution really gets in the way :/ You tend to overcost the cards a lot and there are too many templating issues. Looking at existing cards with similar effects to see how they're worded and how much they cost before making the cards would help polish your cards immensely.

    @LyndonF— OVERALL
    I found that most of those cards were clean and interesting concept wise, but a recurring trend was a questionable balancing. I think you sometimes undervalue the combination of different very synergistic effects. Still, there was a good mix of original, flavourful, or just clever designs, it was quite enjoyable to read through =D

    @Faiths_Guide — OVERALL
    There is a lot of cleverness and originality in this cycle. Each of your card has something unique to offer from a design perspective and you definitely weren't afraid of taking some risks, which did lead you to some questionable iterations. Though I can still appreciate the broader concept behind each card, there are about half of them that I would iterate again to improve their play pattern.

    @brcien — OVERALL
    You managed to keep your cards clean and realistic in most cases which was very appreciable. I'd say the only one that's really off-the-line is your planeswalker card because of its stats, but it's an incredibly difficult card type to design for, so believe me I understand x) You didn't try anything too novel but there were definitely some neat little variations ^^

    @bnew07 — OVERALL
    It was very enjoyable to see how you mixed different kind of multicoloured cards, with classic multicoloured, hybrid and split cards altogether. You had a good balance between clean clever designs and more risky but novel cards. More importantly, you didn't gravely stumble on anything, which overall makes a solid cycle of cool designs!

    @sanjaya666 — OVERALL
    You had one of the most flavourful cycle of cards I've seen in this contest. There are a lot of elegant ideas in this batch, with just a bit of execution mistakes sprinkled on them ;) I don't think you had a single perfect card, but I also don't think you has a single card that was a complete failure concept wise, and I liked your concepts.

    @SmallJem — OVERALL
    You have some great innovative concepts, as well as a strong sense of flavour at the service of gameplay. The templating mistakes are so numerous it becomes an issue though, I try to get past those kind of mistakes but most of your cards have missing punctuation and obsolete game terms, they could really use a bit of polishing. On the same note, you get double-dinged for ignoring the “Sudoku” rules as both your instant/sorcery and planeswalker/creature cards share a colour.

    @kickash — OVERALL
    It's difficult to judge your cycle because I think there's a massive gap of quality between the top of your ranking and the bottom of it. Plax is one of my favourite card of the whole contest, Runa and Zone of Enigma both have very interesting concepts, on the other hand Thalion Call is surprisingly simple for a design contest and Proffer isn't really playable I believe. Overall, I still think there's more good than bad in it, I'm just surprised by the gap between those cards.

    @Derfaulehelmut — OVERALL
    I thought some of your concepts were really good and innovative, you seem to like throwbacks to olders play styles of MTG and that creates some interesting variations. The quality of designs was not always consistent though, there were a couple cards a little too unrealistic and you're taking a few liberties with the colour pie.
    image image

    @ArinSka — OVERALL
    You add a lot of little flavourful riders to your cards which makes them interesting to read and also a little reminiscent of old-school MTG cards ^^ You tend to misestimate their gameplay value though. Most of those are cute but they should not really be changing the cost of the card. So, I think those were interesting designs, but the balancing and rarity were a little scrambled.

    @ouser94501 — OVERALL
    I think you're very good at creating fun mini-games, I believe most of those cards would be fun to play and introduce new and exciting gameplay elements to the game. The main issue for me with this cycle was the choice of colours. A lot of those cards were not truly multicoloured cards, and the colour pie aspect were sometimes a bit off. So I definitely found your concepts interesting, but I believe the execution could have been more realistic.

    @Ranshi922 — OVERALL
    I feel like your cycle of cards had a lot of elegant variations and ideas on existing themes. Most of your cards were also really clean and realistic, they'd fit right into a real set no questions asked ^^ The whole cycle was a little light on innovation though, for a design challenge, though it was definitely a really strong entry.

    And now for the Top 3!

    — THIRD PLACE —

    image

    @Ranshi922 You proposed a super solid cycle of cards with very little mistakes and some cool new variations on some well-known effects. I'm especially fond of Putrid Revival, it's one of my favourite card from this contest! With just a couple novel effects thrown into the mix, I definitely think you'll get first place soon :)

    — SECOND PLACE —

    image

    @Faiths_Guide That was a difficult one to judge xD I think you had the best concepts by a pretty comfortable margin, every single one of your card concepts were elegant and original! But I do think some of them would be really problematic (Accountability as it is worded would make any game spiral out of control instantly, I don't think Raucous Questioning would be worth adding to a deck, etc.) So I settled on a compromise: second place for having the best concepts but not first place because I think there are some issues with execution ;)

    — FIRST PLACE —

    @bnew07 Well, now I'm glad I didn't have to compete against you in your own challenge XD You made almost no mistake, there were some original ideas, some strong mechanical flavour and everything was super solid from start to finish. I think your entry was the most complete and balanced for this challenge, congratulations! =D

    Congratulations to @everyone who entered, everyone brought something super interesting, I really enjoyed the general quality of all your designs :D Now for the prizes:

    - @bnew07 — Which 5 cards of your choice do you want me to favourite?
    - @Faiths-Guide — Which 3 cards of your choice do you want me to favourite?
    - @Ranshi922 — Which 1 card of your choice do you want me to favourite?

    Thanks again everyone for participating! I'll be coming back next week with the second challenge, "You Might As Well Tribal!" of the GDS3, with a little twist of course ;) Hope to see you there as well!
  • What did the ding mean?
  • @Ranshi922
    Getting a *DING* means you broke one of the contest rules, you can find the details in the Google Doc ^^ In your case, you use Legendary Instants on Ranshi's Counterpoint. While Legendary itself is an evergreen mechanic, Legendary nonpermanent is actually a different mechanic only appeared on Dominaria, and there's no sign of it ever being re-used outside this block ^^ I know it's a bit tricky because it has the same name as the Legendary mechanic that just means "you can't get more than one on the battlefield", so I didn't hold it too much against you for this one.
  • Gotcha. I actually read the doc and figured it out after my immediate reaction was to ask.
  • @ningyounk, I took a glance at my friend’s reviews. All of those were Dark Souls references, not just Yuria.
  • @Ranshi922
    Aaaah XD I never played this game, so the references are lost on me, unfortunately >.< At first, I saw the word Hollow and thought maybe it was a reference to Bleach, that's how I arrived on a Dark Souls wiki ^^
  • Sif is a boss in Dark Souls 1... I think. @Arinska, correct me if I am wrong.
  • Wow! That's visually the coolest winner announcement I've ever seen!
  • Agreed. Tbh I think my username looks best in silver.
  • @Tomigon
    It's literally my same thought!
  • @Tomigon @Corwinnn
    Haha thanks, I had that idea of using the uncommon/rare/mythic colours right before I posted the reviews. This is literally the only reason why there is an one hour gap between the "I'll announce the results soon" message and the results themselves xD
  • I think that the time is well worth it! That looks fantastic! Nobody else on this site as far as I’m aware is as in depth with the results.
  • @ningyounk, when can we be expecting the next round to be up?
  • @Ranshi922
    Next round will be next week! ^^
  • Next week could mean tomorrow or today depending on the type of calendar structure you go by! ;)
  • edited February 2019
    @Ranshi922
    Oh, I meant later than this ^^ I want to let people breath a little between the rounds ;) I was thinking Friday, maybe Wednesday or Thursday depending on how impatient I get XD
  • :(

    I’m raring to go.
  • @ningyounk am I allowed to join in the next one or not?
  • @bigbadbooknerd
    Absolutely, unlike the original GDS3, this is an open contest ^^ You may join at any point and skip any round =D
  • Totally agree with @Tomigon and @Corwinnn’s assessment. Stellar stuff, @ningyounk!

    Congrats to all entrants and especially other @Winners!
  • Congrats to the winners!
    Also @ningyounk how did you pull this amazing contest off? The feedback was informative and the presentation is absolutely beautiful.
    Can't wait to join the next round!
  • Thanks for the feedback, and congrats to the winners!
