  The deciding factor was the novelty of the 1st place card and its relative simplicity over the 2nd Place card which was a strong functional design but did not innovate quite as much.

  Honestly, I personally also felt that first place deserved it from the moment I saw it. It was a great and very fitting idea, creating a believable concept that we haven't seen before that fit in perfectly with Eldrazi flavor.
