Cycle Challenge - Angels
With the Aristocrat Challenge having ended just last week, I thought I would come up with a new challenge to replace it.
The Cycle Challenge - Angels
Like a lot of you, I really love a good cycle of cards. Let's try this out and see how it goes. If people seem to like this, we will continue to have a new challenge each week for the next few weeks or so.
This weeks Cycle Challenge: Angels
Here are the rules...
1. Must be a creature and must be an Angel.
2. CMC and rarity should be consistent.
3. Must have 5 angels, one of each color, to complete the cycle.
4. Try to fit each one into it's color with both FLAVOR and ABILITY.
Judging will be based on flavor, votes, and comments, as well as playability and balance
The reward for this challenge shall be a TROPHY and a custom card of choice! The top three cards will be announced.
This challenge will end on July 10th

All have at least one blue mana in the casting cost
This is a disclaimer before you decide to read this. There will be fifteen cards [ possibly more ]. If you find it unacceptable, skip the rest of this and reply.
This is merely an outline of the cards I will be posting [ names only ] for the challenge. I am using art purely from Peter Mohrbacher, which severely limits color cycling. Any future Angels and the Fallen from the Angelarium site [ which I doubt, since the contest ends in a week ] will also be posted later on, since green is completely absent in the current fifteen cards. All current cards will either be monocolored or dualcolored. I will also continue making them regardless of whether the challenge is over, as well.
Each card will cost 3BC, where B is either black or white, and C is the secondary color; white in the case of Israfel, Sahaqiel, and Zadkiel. Also, each card is independent from the rest; they will not share any abilities whatsoever, except flying.
Angels :
- Monowhite:
1. Israfel, Angel of Song
2. Sahaqiel, Angel of the Sky
3. Zadkiel, Angel of Mercy
- White / Blue :
1. Estibus, Angel of Divination
2. Matariel, Angel of Rain
3. Shelegiel, Angel of Snow
4. Zachriel, Angel of Memory
- White / Black :
1. Azrael, Angel of Death
2. Hasmed, Angel of Annihilation
3. Leliel, Angel of Night
4. Simikiel, Angel of Vengeance
- White / Red :
1. Uriel, Angel of Flame
Fallen :
- Black / White :
1. Suphlatus, Angel of Dust [ This artwork is also present in Dustmorpher, one of my cards. ]
- Black / Blue :
Rahab, Angel of the Deep
- Black / Red :
1. Af, Angel of Anger
It seems you beat me to it @Damnation.
Haha.
I used his art for Keter a few months back.

However, all of my angels are 4/4 fliers with the same cmc, and all of the planeswalkers use the same numbers, so I think the weirdness cancels out. :P

@Corwinnn - Disqualified - Too bad you entered your own contest! All kidding aside, I wanted to have an example posted, and came up with the keyword ability part way through. I hope you guys enjoyed my cycle of Angels!
@cadstar369 - 40/50 - Great synergy between the Angel and it's Planeswalker. I do prefer my Angels to be a little more traditional, but the artwork was superb, nonetheless. Some felt OP and as much as I appreciate the extra effort you put into it, it has a clunky feel to getting everything to work. I think if Ein Sof would have been a land, it would have felt smoother to me. This was still a wonderful entry!
@BoilingWater - 42/50 - Nice cycle! I love the artwork you selected, and the affinity for your creature type was a nice touch to go along with the names, so points for synergy! I would have loved these more with static abilities, as opposed to tapping abilities, just because the tapping takes them out of combat situations. Great Job!
@benw - 45/50 - Another great cycle with killer art. I really love the way these come together and yet function independently. Some of the abilities felt stronger than others, but great synergy! Really great job!
@SirWarriorLegend - 45/50 - You and Cadstar369 really went out and made some Angels! I love the Ravnica theme and the art choices you made. Some of them were very strong and some were not as strong as they could be, but the fact that they stand apart, and still feel like a cycle is really cool. They compliment their guild colors well. Very good job!
@Looverse - 48/50 - Wow. As I go through these, I'm reminded of how cool your cards are. Great art, the theme is simple and elegant. I love the flavor text, and how it ties in so that you feel each Angel holds the same philosophy. Really nice work!
@Link - 35/50 - Great Artwork, and I love how you made them Incarnations. I think it helps explain having an Angel in each color, without having to say much else. Really cool cards, but they miss the mark for synergy, as they feel more like individual cards than a cycle, even though they have some cycle similarities. Nice work, regardless, and thanks for the entries!
@Red_Tower - 40/50 - Nice second cycle. This one also has great art and better synergy than the first set. I would have liked to have seen better names (I know, I'm picky) but they were creative and kinda fun. The third abilities, I think, would have all been better if they were all similar... either all simple keyword abilities, or ETB effects, and not a mix up. Thanks for the extra effort!
@Mana_M0nger - 46/50 - You've showed why you're on the favored members list with this set. I love the art work and flavor text on these. They have a great theme. My only issue with them is the number of lands required, but aside from that I can't find much to critique here! Very well done!
The Results!
