Cheer me up

Greetings fellow cardsmiths. I am playing MTG for a while now and always enjoyed having fun with other players attending fnm at our local game store. But since I am losing way too many games for a while now, I feel a little discouraged and could need some encouragement. Partly my declining success may be due to bad luck, but I feel increasingly unsure about how to play. Feeling like a terrible MTG player and suffering from ADD, wich keeps me from focussing on playing well doesn't really help using good tactics and strategies.

Since I don't wanna leave my hobby behind, I'd be glad for finding some encouraging cards as well as some tipps, how to cope with my dissatisfaction. New and old cards are welcome, the limit of entries is 5. Deadline for this contest is 27.04.2019, but don't be too harsh, if I start judging a little later.

1st place may choose 5 favorites or a follow and 2 favorites.
2nd place may choose 4 favorites or a follow and 1 favorite.
3rd place may choose 3 favorites or a follow.

Comments

  • I seem to only lose games as well, but that's probably since I'm unlucky with shuffling. I tried playing at some drafts, but I always lost. I don't regret the losses as much as the feeling that they were unfair games due to varying circumstances. I find my favorite thing to play is Commander because it isn't competitive and it allows for more variety so even losses feel fun, because every game is unique.

What formats do you play? If you can afford a constructed format deck such as for Commander, I'd recommend Commander. Disappointingly, I couldn't afford it at the time my friends played it and now I regret missing out on it.

My only issue is Commander is played on certain days at the local game stores. So I could never find the reason to buy the deck I made, when my friends were busy.

To conclude this recommendation for trying something different, I'm going to leave one of my favorite quotes about a changing perspective. (Also, check if your friends are interested in the format first.)

"He woke up dreading tomorrow, until he embraced her sorrow. Mourning himself, she sat and burrowed herself in his arm!"
    - Mercy

Sorry for the slight gender bender themes, if that offsets anyone. It's just what inspires myself.

(I'll post some actual cards later, once I gather artwork!)

@Mila, your an inspiration to many cardsmiths, including myself. You have some very creative and cool cards. Don't let anything stop you in your magic path. Your one of the best smiths this sites ever seen, and i am willing to bet you are awesome on the battlefield playing any format. Keep playing. You will get to where you want to be. Just dont give up. I support you, and ill make you some positive cards here asap. I just got out of a fight myself, but we are working things out. Dont ever give up. Ill kick a mofos butt if they ever hurt you. Your one of the sirens of mtgcs, and its ok if you lose a game or two or a hundred. Just dont ever give up. If you need to vent or talk, you can always pm me.
  • Mila, I have ADHD, OCD, EAD, ODD, numerous anxiety disorders, & a couple of phobias. I completely understand. It doesn't matter whether or not you're good at playing the game; I certainly am not, but I love to do it. If you enjoy playing, that's what matters.

    Do you play cube? https://mtgcardsmith.com/blog/ccccube#disqus_thread
My cube has many just-for-fun cards(aka group hug cards) and it's super fun even if I lose.

If you want to win in constructed format, I recommend control deck. You don't put out so many creatures on the battlefield, so maybe it's not so confusing
  • Also, Mila, having played through many rotations myself, WotC love to throw wrenches into the mix, so what works in one rotation, doesn't typically fly in the next. We tend to fall in love with a style, or color combo, or a mechanic, and WotC has to constantly evolve and cater to everyone.

Having said that, I agree with @Tomigon about the Control Decks. They come in many colors and flavors, but require a bit of patience to pull off.

Creature Control is always fun... now you have it, now you don't! What do people hate? Losing to their own creatures!

    image

Deck Control is also fun, but never for the person getting decked!

And one card that is a remake of an old card that gave my friends a lot of nightmares...

Let's just say that reanimator decks need fuel, and making your opponent volunteer their creatures is a reward all it's own.

If you were able to consistently make your little creatures bigger, you'd probably win more :)

  • I love magic, but play from a very narrative story telling perspective. I find it hard to play against competitive decks because they are designed with a different point of view in mind. My decks are trying to both win and tell a compelling original story. I lose often to competitive decks designed to simply win, but usually the deck is so dull I can't take it seriously as a work of art. It's like trying to compare a formula 1 race car to the Beatles Yellow Submarine. Yeah maybe the race car goes the fastest, but the yellow submarine is going to be a much better adventure.
  • Thank you all for your tipps and encouragement. I also see great cards, I already love. It's really comforting to find your posts here.

@murkletins I play modern, 'cause our game store offers modern and standars at fnm, but I thought of trying some standard for a while. Just to see how that coes.

@sorinjace Thank you so much, I think, you overestimate my skills as a cardsmith, but I always do my best to come up with creative and flaverful cards and am happy to hear, I can inspire you.

@Ranshi922 You're right, it's about enjoying the game but that's a bit of my problem right now. I feel like being more angry about losing than happy about playing. That's why I was hoping for some kind words.

@Tomigon we have a cube at home (Well two to be honest), but we seldom find the time to draft... And well a control deck might be worth a try even though I am one of that people that hate control decks. Moght be different when playing them

@Corwinnn Great cards, there's one I'll surely print (if you don't mind) an play for a while since we a planning to have a mtg cardsmith tournament at home. And about the rotation, I try to keep up with the latest changes in modern decks, but I'll try to look into that even deeper.

@Faiths_Guide Many thanks for your card. that's really neat and will surely find a place in our mtg cardsmith tornament as well, if you allow.

@pstmdrn Oh my gosh, I know that feeling! There's nothing I could add!
  • @Mila
    I definitely allow :)
  • As always, feel free to play with any of my cards... preferably the good ones!
  • @Mila
When I first started, I played a lot of standard and kept getting mercilessly beaten by my brother's Tasigur deck. We switched to commander and have been having a blast since. Personally, I love commander more cause as @pstmdrn got at, you can have so much fun with the decks. I rarely ever win, but I almost always have fun (I play superfriends and a Narset enlightened master [she's one of the more hated commanders in the format], so I'm often a first target), but I just focus on little wins. Sometimes just making a cool play is equally, if not more satisfying as winning, and showing off a cool deck you've brewed is equally as cool.

My final point, is definitely laugh and joke with your playgroup. When you're just chilling and having fun and laughing, its a far more enjoyable game than when everyone's trying to cut each others' throats and one up each other :)
  • @Mila your underestimating your ability to create. Your good. Not many people can even comprehend what we all do on here. I talk to plenty of people outside the world of mtg, let alone mtgcs, and if I bring any of this up to them, they all say that I am speaking foreign to them that they don't understand it. So, like I said. Don't underestimate yourself. You have a gift.

Also, can I drop some cards here that are new even if they may not be 'uplifting' per se in the flavor text? I read some of your comments and that you plan to use them for your games. I am completely cool with you using any card I have made, but was wondering if I can drop some new ones here I have made?

Well hope you will like any of these Mila, if with any luck, you may be able to use any of them. I made a couple of support creatures for Max if you want to check them out they are on my profile.

I want to take a second to thank @Faiths_Guide again for the tip on Mourning Titan.
