  • Story is a little rough @The-DM, but we (kinda) know that Serra is being reborn. Also, church of Serra.
  • Ah. What's serran life?
  • Serran life:
    Spend 2 life:Add one mana

    Ah yeah, Loving Bear x) For those of you (a.k.a. 99.9% of people) who don't remember the card from like, one year ago, here it is:

    The problem was that there was a bad interaction with this kind of cards where:
    1) Let's say you have 2 psylian life, so it's a 4/4.
    2) You get attacked by two 2/2s. You blocked one of them with the Loving Bear.
    3) The 2/2 that was blocked dies, but because you lose all your psylian life to the other 2/2 that hit you in the face, your bear is downgraded to a 2/2 as well and dies even though it was a 4/4 when it blocked.

    Because of this, I removed all the toughness bonus "as long as you have psylian life". When the other green theme "as long as your life total is odd" came along, I decided to differenciate them by having the psylian life archetype care more about abilities that can protect you, and the Odd life archetype be more about growth so it would get the stats boost.

  • Yeah, it felt a little odd @ningyounk...
  • Quick question @ningyounk, how bad is my card?

    About the story, it's very fuzzy. We talked about it a lot at some point but haven't figured out what is the main drive of the story yet. Among the things we know, there's a character that stayed through all iterations who's a mute girl that can only communicate through music. That's just how she talks. We also know that Serra is reborn in the set, which is the start of the Renaissance era of Rezatta. And we know a Da Vinci-like character is involved. I mentioned the possibility that he could actually be a planeswalker and that he "borrows" some of his most brilliant idea to other planes.

    @LordTachanka123
    Do you mean Twin Statues? Bad as-in design-wise or utility-wise? Because it's not a bad design, I could see a world where this get printed but double strike is a bit odd so the set would need to have a specific theme that justifies it. It's definitely a cool idea to have put defender so you can't cheese the opponent with a Giant Growth, but at common it makes attacking very difficult so it would create some board stall, I think. Utility-wise, it's actually a pretty good card and an excellent blocker which is why it doesn't fit this slot specifically. I actually need something very "meh" here, that doesn't pull the focus XD

    Ok, for the remaining land removal slot, it's not especially refine or elegant but I suppose this could do the job:

    A 4-mana red or green card that destroys a land, artifact or enchantement is pretty common. I figured destroying a creature with flying is roughly interchangeable with destroying an artifact or enchantment. The instant speed makes the card slightly more interesting.

  • @ningyounk

    Is there a possibility that I can make some of those people you mentioned? I enjoy character design and lore.

    If so, then what's their races? Is that decided yet?
  • @The-DM, it'll probably be a while till we make them, as I doubt any of them will be (un)common,

    @The-DM
    Sure, if you can find a cool design for any character, we'll gladly use it! ^^
    Any character inspired by the Italian/European Renaissance era is fair game, but more specifically we could really use a card for some of those characters:
    - Any of the artists that gave their name to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle (Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, Donatello, and Michelangelo).
    - Serra reborn
    - Niccolo Machiavelli
    - The mute girl that talks using music

    Their race hasn't been decided yet, don't be afraid to make some of them non-human, especially because the plane has anthropomorphic animals:

    [EDIT]: P.S.: Yeah, as LordTachanka123 mentioned above, they probably won't be uncommons so aim at rare and mythic for those characters ^^ Maybe some of the artists can get at uncommon I suppose.
  • I will smith with the cards with the greatest possible exertion!
  • Hey @ningyounk, who's niccolo?

  • Do you think that sized down this could be Serra?
  • @ningyounk ;
    Is this the best word to describe the mute girl?

    Sprechstimme (Sorry. I don't know how to define it in my own words...)
  • Weren't we naming the girl Eco?
    @ningyounk

  • @LordTachanka123

    Niccolo Machiavelli is the author of the book "The Prince", a very famous political book that was considered particularly unethical, and frankly evil xD He gave us the word "Macchiavellian", in other words he could very easily be a bad guy in the story!

  • Oh, I remember MaRo mentioning him in his podcast on white-black @ningyounk

  • I can't use that art, @LordTachanka123 . The art is blocked by my school.

  • Concept for Serra.

    Beautiful art, yeah it could totally work as a Serra illustration I suppose! ^^

    @The-DM
    I definitely had to google that XD But yes, Sprechstimme is exactly the kind of thing she would use to communicate, though don't think imitating actual words, just emotions. If she agrees with you, the music is allegro and joyful, if she doesn't it becomes more dissonant. Maybe if she's sad she would break into a slow sonata, while she would express anger through rising staccato for instance.
  • @ningyounk, are you a musician?
  • Why is she G/W/B?
  • Those are the colors of the church of Serra I believe. I can always change it though, @ningyounk @The-DM.
  • @LordTachanka123

    No, I don't play any instrument sadly, that was about the extent of my musical knowledge xD

    GWB would work ^^ It's a bit hard on the mana though for a set that doesn't have a multicolour theme, it would make her a very niche planeswalker. Don't worry too much about the planeswalker cards though and don't hesitate to make multiple versions of the same character, we won't decide what card to put in the set at this stage anyways, it's content for later.

    Also, here's a rendition of a planeswalker Serra card using the illustration you posted earlier, it does look pretty badass and this non-human, almost artifact version of her is a very unique twist:

  • You'll have to make Serra; the art is blocked for me.
  • Awesome card @ningyounk, it really fits with Serra in all ways. I especially love the passive, as when I was playing playtest, serran life felt REALLY awesome. Not OP, but strong enough for you to want more.

    @The-DM

    Don't worry, you can use any other art you like and you can post text-only cards. It's just for the concepts at this stage, the cards won't go directly into the set, we need to know more about what it needs, the planeswalkers is one of the last things you design usually.
  • I'm not a big fan of tricolor(Fun fact:I own one tricolor deck, it's Naya) so I def think that mono-white is good.
  • (Insert awesome name for Colombus)   3ub

    Legendary Creature-Human Pirate          [u]

    Whenever {Cardname} attacks, you may discover(That's what it's called right?).

    Creature spells that were cast by being discovered enter the battlefield with a -1/-1 counter.

    4/5

    Just a concept.
