The Gatewatch: 20 years later.

edited August 2019 in Off-topic Chat
This is a story I've thought about for a while.

What if later on in the MTG storyline, the Gatewatch and other planeswalkers have kids and new planeswalkers arise and a new Gatewatch is born?

For instance:

Jace's daughter.

Chandra and Nissa's Son(?)

What do you think? Can you help make this story more sound and real?

Comments

  • I'm not sure but I think Jace and Liliana had a thing. Plus, I wonder if Nissa and Chandra would adopt, ask for a donor or just make an elemental and call it a day.
  • For a new Gatewatch to be created, that would mean the old Gatewatch would have to disband. Even if it was a matter of you putting the idea into words a certain way, it's more interesting for a new group to come together after an old one's gone, or even to face the threat that defeated them. So I think it's a good idea to create a new "big bad."

Also, how many of the new planeswalkers are going to be the children of known planeswalkers? If the Gatewatch becomes a sort of community, all could be reasonable. Half, maybe? Or just a small amount? I'm not sure.

Finally, this new group probably shouldn't be called the Gatewatch, because they have nothing to do with Sea Gate. They should have abilities, mechanics, synergies and the like that set them in a different direction than the original Gatewatch and make them feel unique, especially if you're planning to build a set around it.

Of course, there's a lot more to figure out, but I hope this helps send you in the right direction.
  • Maybe the new villain would be bolas' son?
  • @SteampunkDragon, thanks for all of that.

@Pepperoni, I think Jace and Vraska got something...

@KorandAngels, Not to ruin your dreams, but Nicol Bolas is trapped in the Prison Realm with Ugin, and brothers can't have babies.
  • So first up.

I am a personal fan of Jace, and I would like the idea of his daughter, but this is up for debate.

Now can an elemental have a Spark? Be cause if so I give full credit to @SteampunkDragon if it becomes a thing.

Now a new name, we need a new event to make it.
I'm going to start writing something, but this is my main concept:

"Inside the Prison Realm, Nicol Bbolas slowly drew power from Ugin to break the barrier between that world and the multiverse, he escapes and captures the original Gatewatch (including new members) and the Children and New Planeswalkers must team up and form the New Gatewatch" And where they form could help choose the new name.

What do you think of this?
  • I don't like 'Bolas again' as the villain, honestly, but having it relate to him could be cool. Is Tezzeret still kicking? An old, grizzled version of him would be cool, communicating with Bolas. Maybe Dovin takes control of Esper and takes vengeance on Chandra & co. Or a good planeswalker goes bad, like Ugin going mad trapped with Bolas, or Bolas' whispers causing Sarkhan to snap again, or maybe even the same thing with Jace, so he and his daughter face off. Even Garruk could make comeback...? Or just a new villain. All of those would be better than Bolas, I believe.
  • @SteampunkDragon, I agree.

I think a compelling story with Jace could really force a new age of magic storytelling.

Or Tezzeret could make something good.
  • I'm planning a futuristic Ravnica set right now, and Cyberjace will be a villain. It's working pretty well so far.

I forgot about that thing with Vraska.

Honestly, Bolas isn't that good of a Villain and Jace isn't that good of a protagonist. I want to see Elspeth, Kaya, Hautli, Saheeli, Garruk, Nahiri, Wrenn and Six etc. do stuff, be the villains, save the day. Niv Mizzet as the new guildpact, explore new themes.

  • I don't think that just because a planeswalker has a child means that child has a spark.
  • Assuming bolas is more powerful than your Typical Evil Mastermind, he would have created an heir, whether or not it's his real ancestor.
  • If I was an evil mastermind I wouldn't have created an heir for fear they attempt to usurp me.
  • In that case, he created the being to only gain power when he died or was stopped from acting.

@Dom_Rocks Jace is into that scaley gorgon ass since he and Liliana aren't together anymore.
  • @Arceus8523 Feels bad for the child then (like that Teferi's daughter.)

And that makes the story kinda, boring.

@Arceus8523 the only record of a planeswalker's child is Teferi's, and from the lore I'm pretty sure he had her at a time when his spark had been literally taken away from him. I'm also pretty sure the mother of the child wasn't a planeswalker, so it's not unreasonable that two planeswalkers could transfer parts of their spark to a child.
