Ok, we are done for real this time. No more entries will be taken. I got two contests to judge this week, but I will knock both out in a timely manner.
I am working on judging this contest. This is easily the toughest contest I've had to judge, but it's a good thing. My best turnout by far. I'm narrowing it down to top finalist before I post it. The support cards should be a bit easier since there's a bit fewer entries. Just figured I'd let everyone know this won't be a contest I let slide for a multiple weeks.
Alrightie boys and girls I have my list of top 3 with plenty of honorable mentions with the number of favorites. ( Which @murkletins /Mercy will be issuing prizes of her own.)
Primary Category Winners- Experience Commanders
First place @TenebrisNemo - 5 favorites of your choice.
You really wanted to win this contest, as you made the max entries and brought quality with the quanity. I like everything about this card, as it merges two existing mechanics into a new card. So congrats as the winner of this category!
Second place @Oshuja89 - 4 Favorites of your choice.
While I appreciate you made an entire allied color cycle, this guy is the front man of the bunch as gives your creatures faux hexproof. I'd imagine you'd want to build a deck with tons of flash critters/enablers to get experience counters thru out the game. it's a solid effect witha reasonable trigger.
Third place @Sorinjace - 3 favorites of your choice.
I know you made this homaging me...but don't think for a second it got on the list because of that. My judging process can never be bought that easily..... (opens a 5 dollar check from his sponsors.) Boros badly needs commanders that do more things before beat people in the face, and this angry lil egg gives those colors something else to do. I envision a deck with tons of spells that hit everything like Blasphemous Act, burn down the entire board while your lil egg keep punishing the players.
A fun card that has a toned down trigger, so it doesn't make all enchantments instantly zero. The theme and art just scream enchantment party at their house.
The fear monger makes his appearance in my top 5 in both card and name. I like that it uses the experience counters as a resource , not just something you up and forget about. It's a much more interactive use it.
Sixth place @EternalWolf88 - 2 favorites of your choice.
I'd personally dislike playing against this card, but I know this sort of card is some people's exact kinda fun. Which means it's doing what it's supposed to correctly....Stealing people's stuff.
Seventh place @akselodd - 2 favorites of your choice.
The real "Delve"r of secrets here. I could see this guy being a favorite among Sultai players.
Eighth place @CXGummy01 - 2 favorites of your choice.
I enjoy this card, as it has a trigger it assists in making happen. You can run down your opponents pesky creatures by forcing them to block, making it effective creature removal.
Ninth place @shadow123 - 2 favorites of your choice.
A solid commander for mill decks. He does what he does very effective.
Tenth place @Deepsky - 2 favorites of your choice.
This a fun card, with a slightly impractical trigger. It would definitely take some work to build around getting it go off. Granted I wouldn't be surprised if he got into the 99 of another experience counter commander deck since they work off the same counters, then he could backdoor on to the value train.
Second category -Experience Counter Support cards
We're going do a top 3 for this since there's far fewer entries pick from.
First place @TenebrisNemo - 5 favorites of your choice.
I like that it's a card that works with experience counters, but still has value even if you haven't gotten any going yet and just need cards/counters. (Like your commander has been repeatedly murdered heh.) I am granting you first for the collective effort in this category.
This could work really well, but also be super dangerous depending on what your opponents are running. (Yes, let's give the Meren of Clan Nel Toth player 10 experience counters......) I like that it taps into two separate mechanics and combines them nicely into a single card.
Third place @sanjaya666 - 3 favorites of your choice.
I would probably given this the top spot for this second category if were just minorly tweaked. If it said just "Whenever one or more creatures you control attack, you get an experience counter." you'd been golden. Which it's not the issue of it crapping out soldiers that makes it too good(could be straight X counters gives X soldiers at that point.), is that how would interact with every experience commander that triggers off it. Otherwise I think you were on a great track with support you had going, nicely done. ______________________________________________________________________________
Ok, got this beast of a contest handled. Thank you everyone who entered as this was a long journey to this point, but we're at the end. I really appreciate the number of entries and creativity used here. I can only hope WOTC lifts a few of these ideas in future commander sets as experience counters need make a come back. I'd also like give a special thanks to Murkletins/Mercy for additional prize support. Anyways just let me know what cards to favorite. I will be favoring several of the entries since there was plenty of solid work here that deserves to be noticed.
@Lastjustice thank you so much! There was a lot of cool cards dropped in this contest, congrats to everyone else for their entries and of course the other winners and honorable mentions!
LJ I thought you may like these cards so I picked these for you to favorite!
I got inspired while waiting to judge this contest. I wanted make an allied colored batch of Experience commanders of my own. I wrote down the basic ideas for each, and waited till this contest was over besides one who snuck out early. So here's my full cycle for anyone who was curious what I might had in mind.
@Lastjustice Thank you for hosting this contest (and @murkletins for co-hosting it)! And thank you for liking the card! It was a weird idea I had and thought it would make a fun card to play in a game of commander, I'm glad it turned out well. Still sorta new, so making sure I understand the prize system correctly. "4 favorites of your choice" as in "pick 4 cards (yours or another smith's) and they get a favorite?"
