Indian Folklore Set-Set Design

Hello! This set's theme was told to me by my mom, who will also help with some of the worldbuilding.
If you don't know what vision design is, search it up. I'm lazy.
This set is about Indian folklore, and will include tons of stuff from that. This is a miniset, and will only need 250-325 cards.

Current mechanics from old sets being looked at:

New mechanics:
Meditation counters

Remember, all feedback welcomed.

Edit:This is all old, I will post new stuff in a comment soon.

  • Also, disregard all current mtg lore, as this plane is set in the Giovverse, which is only loosely connected to the multiverse, and only loosely connected to Earthenrealm.
  • So is your plan to be strictly based off of Hindu faith and mythology, or just partially based?

If it were me, I'd go all in on basing it off of the Ramayana. That's a truly epic scope adventure story, with a whole cast of legendary level characters- Prince Rama, Lakhsaman, Sita, Ravanna, and Hanuman to name a few. Of course you could include elements from the wider stories, including Krishna, Shiva, Ganesh, Kali and so on. What might be super interesting is if you made a planeswalker version of Vishnu, where the planeswalker type was always Vishnu, but his name changed based on his avataric incarnation- i.e. Rama, Krishna, and so on.

I think this is a super dope idea, and I'd love to help. Also if you're interested, I did a few long (like an hour) podcasts while I was in India with a friend where we discussed some of the deeper insights, and takeaways from the stories and characters of Hindu faith.

  • I’d say Indian Folklore is a very broad topic- for example there’s books like the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, and they both contain very different stories. Is there something you want to zoom in on? A particular timeline or book?

Currently, I don't have a specific thought on what part of Indian folklore I want to scope in on, but some characters I almost know I want are:
    • Hanuman
    • Ganesh(a). Speaking of this @Rayne-Lord, do you know why some people put an a at the end of his name?
    • Shiva
    • Kali
    • Rakshasa
As much as I would love to do the Ramaynana, sadly, I actually haven't read it yet. I have read tons of other books about Indian folklore, specifically talking about the great book Aru Sha. I will read it when I get the time, but I would really need help when trying to nail down the aspects.
I don't just want to base it off of the hindu religion, as there are some tales that I really like, such as the story(Of which I forgot the name of) which is basically Indian Cinderella, but wildly different.
So no, this is right now VERY broad @shadow123.
Also, by no means do I want to say I know a lot about this topic, I know very little, and a lot of what I know is things like gods. Speaking of gods, about a year ago, when I first planned to make this set, the mechanical theme was "Making your creatures gods", which was based off of a thing I heard at church one time, that no one Hindu knew all their gods. So, what better way to represent this than having tons of gods!

Anyways, I would love your help guys, muchly appreciated.
  • @LordTachanka123 Regarding Ganesh/a , apparently the original Sanskrit would put an A at the end of virtually all names, but as language evolved its no longer pronounced, hence Rama is often called just Ram (Rom) and Ganesha is pronounced Ganesh, Shiva is pronounced Shiv (though in my experience most of the people over their call him Mahesh.)

I would recommend even just doing a deep-dive on wikipedia to get you started. And there are abridged translations of both the Gita (I actually recommend this simply as its one of the deepest, profoundly insightful books I ever read.) and the Ramayana. The Gita is avtually just a short episode in the Mahabharata, which I have never read, apparently its the longest book in the world, ten times the length of the bible.

I just wanna say that regardless of Magic, had I never found Eastern (and specifically Hindu/Buddhist) spirituality/philosophy I would not be the man I am today. Its such an incredibly deep, rich culture and I hope that through this set you can in some way reconnent with that aspect of your heritage @LordTachanka123

Something else that could be interesting at least on the mechanical side, would be the idea of Enlightenment, Avatars and such.
  • Enlightenment! I love the idea! I believe I made a mechanic called Enlighten a while back...let me see if I can find it @Rayne-Lord...
  • Enlighten N(As long as you have N or more non-land spells in your graveyard, and this creature isn't enlightened, you may put N +1/+1 counters on this creature. It becomes enlightened.)
This would almost certainly have to be changed, as it was originally designed for "Experimentation", an old set idea I had, based more on science than folklore/religion/mythology/philosophy. I also like the idea of having a "Avatars matter" theme, but I don't know how easy it would be to run through all the rarities.
@Rayne-Lord, had it not been for COVID.
  • @LordTachanka123 you'll get your chance mate. When you do get over there, I highly recommend going to Tiruvannamalai, its not very far from Chennai and its gorgeous, and considered a very sacred place, spectacular temples, sacred hill, and the ashram of the late Ramana Mahrashi (one of my favorite gurus)

I was actually thinking for an upcoming set about using Meditation counters. This would be instead of +1/+1, and -1/-1 counters to avoid confusion. Meditation counters could be used for all sorts of tracking and different abilities. Maybe an Enlighten ability could interact with them.
  • Also, I wonder if the OM symbol could work for a set symbol. Cause that would be siiiiick.
  • Okay, call me an idiot, cause I am, but what's the OM symbol @Rayne-Lord?
  • And also, I love Nirvana.
  • And, I do truly like the idea of meditation counters.

Just look up OM on google images. Its the Sanskrit written form of 'A-U-M' or OM the sacred word, or first sound of creation.
  • I recently resurrected the Mystic creature type from the deep vaults of MTG past for my Arabian set, but i think Mystics in a indian set would be absolutely fire.
  • Yeah, they would!
  • Also, just looked up OM @Rayne-Lord, and I really like it!
  • Also, I would love a Ghandi figure...
  • Okay, anyone have any ideas on colors? I'm thinking this should either be monocolor set, or quad, as I was thinking about Hanuman's colors, and they happen to be ubrg. 4 colors.
  • Personally, I wouldn't have Hanuman have black in his casting cost. It really doesn't go with his character at all. He is a deeply loyal devotee of Prince Rama, and in the end receives Enlightenment from him due to his love and service. Red would represent his trickster nature, but he most certainly not a selfish, or ambitious figure. He's a Paragon of Devotion in Hindu lore. I think that Hanuman is most obviously in Naya colors, as blue doesn't really fit with his abilities or storyline either. He's not really a knowledge seeker. He's more of a badass holy warrior that saves Prince Rama and Sita's ass.
  • Now Ravanna, the ultimate bad guy in that story would probably be the colors you're thinking of. Because he's selfishly after power (b), is an incredibly wise sage (U), is full of passion and fury (R). Grixis is probably his identity, but you could make an argument for green because of his devotion to Shiva, who is (among other things) lord of Wild Places and Beasts.
  • Okay, all very good points, I don't know what I was thinking, and in my defense, I was exhausted from just getting back from the beach. We're on vacation for a little while  :)
  • Red-White-Green
Also, I believe I did black as the only story I can recall off the top of my head(That's a lie. It's just my favorite story.) is when Hanuman attempts(And possibly succedes, I forgot) to eat the sun @Rayne-Lord

  • Also, I would really like Kali to play a bigger part in the story, just to show that black isn't always evil.

I would probably recommend you go into the Alara Shards. That would probably make the most sense since some of the iconic characters fall pretty cleanly into those archetypes.

    Prince Rama (Bant or Naya.)

    Ravanna (Grixis, or Jund)

    Hanuman (Naya)

Shiva (Jund or Esper) - I make the association with black here because Shiva is known as 'The Destroyer' - though whether he destroys material, or ego is up to interpretation.

    Ganesh (Bant)

    Kali (Jund)

Esper might be the only shard that would require a little more thought on who would fall into it, but the other ones seem fairly obvious to me.

  • Yes, Kali is awesome! She slays Demons (both the ones in the world and the ones inside us!) and puts Shiva in his place!
  • Didn't she use her tounge to win some fight?
  • Hey @Rayne-Lord, would you mind if I played around with Sunyata?
  • Kind of. Basically she was facing this demon lord who, whenever he was wounded, his blood would fall to the ground and spring up as other demons. Basically when she fought him she used her tongue to catch the blood before it fell to the ground. Only thus did she defeat him.

Of course- Just so you know, Sunyata is a Buddhist term that basically refers the idea that all things are empty of intrinsic existence and nature, but may also refer to the Buddha-nature teachings and primordial or empty awareness, as in Dzogchen, Shentong, or Zen forms of buddhism.

Also, I just used it to rename the existing mechanic of Devoid from Return to Zendikar. You could use it in a different way, or the same.

I realized it was devoid, but i dont know if it would work with India @Rayne-Lord.
