Heya @Jonteman93 i'm interested in joining, but I'm a little (understatement) confused. Could you (or anyone, really) link previous editions so I can get a better idea of what's going on?
Backstory: During her teenage, Jelene was already a member of an interplanar crime group known as the Immortal Syndicate due to the downfall of her wealthy but corrupt family. One day Jelene was displaced by a portal incident during a botched heist that left her stranded in Kamigawa, specifically in the region of Takenuma swamplands for a long period of time.
Having no one and nowhere else to go, she met another orphan girl named Rin Yuu who then became her close friend and adopted sister for a long time, while also training their swordsmanship skills under the watch of an unknown ronin. Until one day they both took a pact with a demon spirit that granted both of them demonic power and immortality but with the cost of other people's souls.
Jelene was unfazed, but Rin was disheartened by the act of careless killing by her adopted sister, while Rin only killed people only when it was necessary. Days passed, and one day a Syndicate's portal opened again as a powerful Syndicate's member, namely her biological brother Janus, came to pick up his sister back to the fold.
A fight then finally broke between Jelene and Rin, as Jelene coldheartedly said, "Sorry, sister. I'm really thankful for all these years but it's all just... business." In the end, Jelene managed to get an upper hand and left with her brother into the Syndicate, again.
Now, on behalf of the Syndicate, Jelene is on a recon mission to obtain informations about the interesting tournament that is happening on Avelaide, all while making profits by conducting heists along with other Syndicate members that are stationed on the said plane...
Here we have Daybreaker, the thousand-year-old sentient blade, who has felled giants and conquered countries, and to which so many foes have fallen.
Here too we have Elos, a would-be hero. However, every adventuring guild, every wise old mentor, every king in search of aid refuses him.
Fate brought these two together, as Elos, wandering in search of another quest, found Daybreaker in the middle of a forest, stuck in to a stone by an evil sorcerer. Once Elos freed Daybreaker, they came up with a deal:
Daybreaker would teach Elos how to become a true hero, instructing him in the arts of chivalry and valiance.
Elos would enter into the Tournament of Champions, a tournament Daybreaker wasn't allowed to enter before, seeing as he was a talking sword.
With Elos getting on-the-job experience and Daybreaker finally participating in a tournament to prove his worth, the two set out towards Dormania to find learning and glory.
Pan is a revenant, a person who has risen from the dead to seek vengeance. The problem is, he doesn't remember who he wants revenge on. He doesn't remember much of anything. And he can't seem to die until he figures it out. He seeks to join this tournament in hopes of either finding the truth about himself or finding a new path in life.
Usaername For your own characters, you are allowed to write as much as possible. I however recommend that you try to limit yourself to a reasonable limit (like a full comment of text worth) since there will be quite much material for me to read through later on. If you feel you need more than one comment worth's of text then you are of course allowed to write more.
Growing up in Takenuma, Fumeiyona Akuma was on the receiving end of many a verbal retort from the other students training at Eiganjo Castle, who viewed her as lower than them simply because of her Takenuma heritage. Additionally, she had started training much later than the other students, joining the academy at 13 as opposed to the other students’ 7 or 8. Thus, bred out of her skill deferential and lack of respect from the other students, she turned towards a more backhanded way of fighting, taking advantage of her opponent’s weaknesses and exploiting them for her own gain. This was frowned on by the instructors, and so she was expelled at the age of 18. She went back home to Takenuma and resigned herself to practicing her sword skills on the occasional aggressive Oni. However, at the onset of the Kami War, she was called back into action. She heeded the call, eager to show-up her ex-classmates against enemies that lacked honor. She formed a regiment of some of Takenuma’s finest warriors, who were responsible for some well-fought victories. However, after a string of successful battles, a young captain decided he wanted to take over Akuma’s battalion. He insulted her ability as a leader, then proceeded to challenge her to a duel for the right to command the squad. She coldly accepted. The verbal insults continued from the upstart captain, and although his intent was to throw her off, it did the exact opposite. It brought her back to her days at the academy, and she leaned into it, bolstering her fighting spirit. She handily disarmed the captain and held her sword against his throat...
Akuma laughed out loud, emotionlessly.
“Looks like you’ve learned your place, trash”
The captain scowled up at her.
“You fight with no honor, you-”
Akuma pressed her boot further into his back.
“Insult me again and I will kill you.”
The captain smirked.
“You wouldn’t, you cowardly swamp-”
A light grating sound, then all was quiet as the captain’s head slowly rolled away.
"I gave you a choice: Respect me or die. You made your answer clear."
Akuma ran, then. She escaped the pursuing samurai and hid behind a tree, where she fell to her knees. They were right, she thought. I’m no samurai, just a murderer. They were right all along. Maybe I am just swamp trash. I have no allies now. Not the Kami, not the samurai. Dammit, she thought. Who are you Akuma?! Are you just going to give up? That’s not how you survive! She grabbed her sword, determined to right her wrong. She would prove herself worthy of the title of samurai. She stood up, and walked directly into a kami. It’s magic pierced her chest, and she felt a coldness spreading throughout her. She screamed. She had to keep her promise. She had to restore her honor. She had to have respect. She had to…
She awoke in a strange world, completely unlike her own. She found out that she was in Avelaide, and she wandered aimlessly for several years, looking for ways to claim her honor. Until she found it: the Tournament of Champions. Perfect.
Personality: Akuma is normally soft spoken and quiet, that is until she’s insulted. Insult her and she’ll insult right back at you with a straight face and anger in her eyes. When not in use, she keeps her sword, Naku Tuski, in her scabbard, tied with a knot to avoid using it in a fit of rage. While in combat, although she still uses backhand tricks, she is kind, yet cold, and shows respect for her opponent. She doesn’t tend to make “friends” but often throughout the course of a battle, a sense of familiarity can be gained with her opponent. Win or lose, she comes away from a good battle friendlier with her opponent than she was before. She is very open about her emotions but keeps her motive for entering the tournament a secret.
Strengths: Fighting, cleaning weapons and armor, polite interaction, etiquette, being able to read people's finer emotions, communication and social skill.
Weaknesses: Worried people will figure out her past, friendly trash talking, not used to killing humanoids, weak against ranged attacks and magic.
"'Grave of a Soldier'... Hmm... It belongs with the other works in hall 13G of the fiction wing."
Knowledge is power, but all things come at a price. For some, the price is steeper than others. Meet Efilia Coretta, one of the attendants to one of the largest collections of the written word, whether it be fiction or nonfiction, almanacs or mythologies, if it's a book, she can probably find a copy. That is, she'd be able to if the library was remotely sorted. The place had gone through a number of overseers in its time, and each had different ideas on how best to manage it. Now it was her turn.
The halls of this collection was the only world she'd known for nearly ten years now, and worked ceaselessly and tirelessly to try to organize it, a drop of effort in the bucket of work. During her first year, she'd stumbled across what was called a Book of Names, an encyclopedia of the true names of common materials. It was small and useless without any spells to exploit the names, but she read it as she walked whenever she had a free moment traveling from hall to hall, and it became old and worn with use. Once she'd had it memorized from front to back, she shelved it away, likely to never be picked up again until the next overseer began sorting.
She hadn't asked for her prolonged aging, and she certainly hadn't asked for this solitary life surrounded by nothing but wood, leather, and paper. But when the last overseer finally died after several decades of agonizing old age, she'd been chosen to continue the work. And now all she wants is for the next overseer to be chosen, for her to get to see the outside world again, and enjoy simple pleasures such as the taste of food. So when word of the tournament finally got to her thanks to one of the library's few patrons, she leapt at the excuse to leave, making haste to arrive to Kiserova in time.
What was she gonna do in the tournament? Fight, of course. She didn't know the first thing about combat, but she hopes she won't need to. After nine years since she'd read that Book of Names, she'd finally picked up another book on her way out. From hall 2E of the Magic & Principles section of the nonfiction wing, she'd grabbed one with a title that leapt out at her. Ebb and Flow: A Practice in the Theory of Life Energy.
Like @MonkeyPirate2002 said, the 17th. This is the preliminary date for if we get the desired amount of contenders (right now it's 16). If we would undercut this by a small amount, the deadline will be postponed one week (to the 24th) or until we have filled the 16th team. If we would still be a little too few at the third week, I will create a few "NPC - heroes" which will allow us to start the tournament even though we are technically too few.
In the south section of the city lies an old building and a young woman digging through stacks of books and scrolls. The shelves that surround her lie covered in cobwebs. Her work has stalled. It had been years since she had learned anything about the strange tome she found on her bed one night simply entitled Binding of Ipos. Precious little had been written about a strange entity simply known as Ipos and little more about where it came from.
One night strange imagery filled her dreams and words seared themselves into her mind. "You know what to do." There was no longer any doubt in her mind the book was evil. However, she also learned the book could assist her in ways she could never have imagined. With it, she was able to make progress on studies she long since thought were dead ends. Exposure to the book would have side effects in Annita. With the book in her hands, she could perform magic as she never could before.
One day she saw a notice for the tournament and the words echoed in head yet again "You know what to do." She knew she had to enroll despite her hesitation, despite her inexperience, she had to enter the tournament.
Do you want to establish a nation which you put somewhere on the map?
Or do you want to establish a nation which will not exist in this map?
If you want to establish a nation on the map, then you should know the following:
Ephanieriora is an empire that will be kept in mystery. It will not be included into this story but might appear in the future. What your character can find out is that - 1: Ephanieriora has a pact of peace with Medirna and the royalties have a blood relation of some kind. 2: Ephanieriora is a isolationist empire but they have some kind of trade with Medirna, what is traded is unknown. 3: The people of Ephanieriora are not completely human, but they are human enough to be able to breed with humans.
Alsoldan (which is the Dormanian name) is a rather strange "empire". It has the same meaning of empire as the holy roman empire had. Alsoldan actually consists of more than a thousand small countries, kingdoms, republics and other ruling structures. What makes them united into this "empire" is that they have to, in the case of war or national conflict" follow some strict laws that are overseen by the Shambakhin which is kind of like an emperor. However in 99% of cases, they are their own small countries with their own laws and conflicts. They even will rage battles and wars against each others.
These people are humans very similar to Arabic people in appearance. They are more civilized than most Dormanian countries and they are much more technologically advanced. They have some water- and steam-powered contraptions. They also have some early firepower weapons (gunpowder)
Alsoldan and southern Dormania have, what can be considered a "cold peace of trade". Alsoldan and Dormania does not have a good relationship since an earlier war that was devastating for both continents. In Alsoldan, dragons are considered barbaric, ugly, foul, unreliable. In Dormania, dragons are worshiped, honored, protected.
The rest of the world (except Lisakdonia) is so far away or there are no relations of significance between them and Dormania, so they wont be brought up here yet.
Dormania is very diverse both in demographic and political structures. Most nations that are not located in the north-west are under influence of one of the great three nations. Laldenia is the exception to this as they are in an alliance with Lisakdonia across the ocean. (This will be brought up again in the story) It is quite straight forward to establish a nation in here.
MonkeyPirate2002 With other words to my earlier comment, yes it Is okay to establish a nation not on the map.
@Everyone We are now at 12 contenders (I think) and the draft will end this coming Friday, unless we undercut 16 contenders.
If we have not reached 16 contenders until Friday, I will postpone the deadline until we have 16, or we have reached the 24th of July. If that happens, I will create the remaining contenders.
If we overcut 16 contenders, we'll have a quick elimination where I pick the 16 best.
If you haven't joined yet, all you must do to join is to provide a hero card. No companion/signature card or story is required. You can add those things later.
Also if the massive amount of rules ans instructions seems daunting, don't worry too much about it. The instructions are made as I rather give more information than wanted, than less than needed.
In short, the important instructions to be able to win are: * Make a character and a card with max 3 mana cost. * Write a story and additional cards for that character. * Be nice to each others and me.
Dakros was an ordinary general who lived in one of the smaller countries of Alsoldan until a hero accidentally killed his wife when the hero led a dragon into an ambush which happened in Dakros's small village. When Dakros was informed of his wife's death, he was enraged and blamed the death on the hero. In his rage he sought out the dragons who also wanted the hero dead. The dragons granted Dakros the power to control fire, and gave him a small army of elementals to help him. But, with power, there was also evil. Dakros's new powers corrupted him, giving him a bloodlust never to be sated. Eventually, Dakros came into combat with the hero, but Dakros, while being a good general, was not that great of a fighter himself. After returning to his village in defeat, he heard of a tournament accepting only the greatest of warriors. Dakros decided to join the tournament to build more strength, in the hopes of one day facing the hero again and coming out of the encounter with victory.
I forgot to put the artist for Dakros (It's George Vostrikov).
Also, Call of the Fire Lord should be uncommon, not rare.
Steal. Run. Eat. That was the life of an urchin in the slums Kiserova, and Niran was no different. With everyone fending for themselves, Niran found no connection among others, even with the other urchins. She longed for family, someone to give love and be loved back. Try as she might, everyone around Niran pushed her away, finding her creepy and unsettling. That is, until one fateful night, after having her scrap of food stolen by an older urchin, Niran found a violin abandoned in the alleys. Seeing as there was no one to claim the instrument, she began to play it. From the violin came a beautiful and somber song as though the girl had years of experience. Slowly, the song grew more ghastly and eerie, until a spirit materialized from the music and harmonized with Niran. Despite the incorporeal being suddenly appearing in front of her, Niran felt only disappointment. The spirit obeyed her every command to an almost lethal degree, yet there was no love from it. However, urchins are nothing if not pragmatic. Seeing her newly found violin as an opportunity, Niran decided to participate in the tournament of champions, not only to learn more about her enigmatic instrument, but to find someone to call family as well.
Kutos is a human who grew up in the wilds with a group of elusive monks, he has always had the ability to animate the land into golems and elementals to fight for him. For most of his life the monks helped him train that ability but recently they told him he would have to leave the monstary to discover his destiny. He discovered the tournament and got a strange feeling that he should join it.
Strengths:
His power to animate lands is very strong.
He can speak to plants and animals.
Beginner in Martial Arts.
Weaknesses:
He isn't very social and isn't used to interaction.
Not physically strong.
I wasn't around for the first one, was on a break for the second one, and didn't realize the third one (technically 2 Rematch) was happening. But now I'll finally actually be able to participate in one of these!
I will be competing as Jay, a wizard who uses portals to maneuver around the battlefield.
Jay Rilfin was the son and apprentice of Terin Rilfin, the greatest thief in all of Vosanova. Terin baffled the authorities by getting in and out of maximum security museums and banks and stealing priceless artifacts and lots of cash without being seen. Many speculated on how he could complete such crimes. The answer was quite simple. Once, on a trip to a far-away island, Terin found a scroll that taught him the magic of Rifting. This allowed him to, with practice, create portals in space that he could use to teleport places. Terin taught Jay all he knew before he passed away, and while Jay isn't quite as skilled with Rifting as his father, he is still quite good at it. However, Jay didn't want to use his talents for theivery, so he directed his them toward other pursuits. He became an agent of the Vosanovan government for a while, until his superior found out who his father was, thought he was stealing from the government, and fired him. Jay has been working here and there since, as he's never been able to settle down with his ablility to essentially go anywhere in a fraction of the time. When he heard about the tournament, he figured that, if he won, he could finally rid himself of his father's bad reputation. So he signed up.
Strengths: Able to create portals, very intelligent, portals allow for great agility. Weaknesses: Physically weak, relies on Rifting to help him win fights.
Signature Card: Portal Hop, which represents Jay using his portals to maneuver around enemies and warp out of harm's way.
Here is Nilani, the Purehearted with her signature spell!
Nilani is a teenager (17 years old) from a small village where magic was very rare. She grew up being praised and loved by everyone- the town was in constant awe of her talents. Because of her upbringing, Nilani cared only for herself and saw herself as omnipotent at first. The day before Nilani's thirteenth birthday, she was traveling from another village to return to her hometown late in the night by herself. In the darkness, she was attacked by another mage. She lost the one-sided fight quickly, and was held captive. For two years, Nilani suffered at the hands of the mage until she managed to stun him in the night and run away. It was then that she realized how narrow-minded she had been. Nilani was gifted, yes, but she realized that she was nowhere near powerful, and there were so many people weaker than her that could suffer the same fate as her. As Nilani arrived home on her 15th birthday, she decided to devote her life to training so that eventually, she could save others from suffering the same fate as her. At the age of 16, Nilani dropped out of her school and trained for long hours every day, but the horrific experiences she endured continued to haunt her. She learned to harness the power of enchantments she created and started helping them come alive. She created an enchantment to protect her village as she left for the tournament. Now, Nilani comes to this tournament for two reasons: 1. To help herself overcome her past. 2. To get stronger and help prevent anyone from experiencing the same fate as she did.
Strengths/Powers: - Nilani is an enchantress. She can create small scale enchantments right now and can bring them to life as creatures to assist her. Her fighting style is precise and defensive at the start as she creates protective enchantments, and evolves into a more aggressive style as the fight goes longer when she brings the enchantments to life. - Nilani is agile, but not as fast as trained warriors.
Weaknesses: - Large scale magic is difficult for her. - She is still haunted by her past, and is emotionally weak when it comes to that.
Edit: While I know “Enchantress” is not a creature type yet, Nilani, didn’t really feel like a wizard or Druid (like most enchanteresses), so I decided to use enchantress, especially because it also ties with her type of magic too.

I have prolonged the deadline to the 20th instead, so you have the weekend to finish working on your entries.
Now, Nilani comes to this tournament for two reasons:
1. To help herself overcome her past.
2. To get stronger and help prevent anyone from experiencing the same fate as she did.
Strengths/Powers:
- Nilani is an enchantress.
Weaknesses:
- Large scale magic is difficult for her.
Trying to get in...
I should post by the time I've gone to sleep
