We've Made it to the First Draft (Ikoria cube progress update *#3*)!

Hey all! Arceus8523 here on behalf of @Alextorrez6, who will be out of town for the rest of the month. I am excited to bring you the next update to the Ikoria cube, that being, well, that all the cards are basically finished! I've been working closely with Alex to ensure balance among the archetypes, themes, and colors of the cube, and to ensure that the cube provides an enjoyable and interesting draft experience.

Now the goal is to balance, refine, and proofread the cube. We're working on getting the cube posted on Untap so people can draft and play it (I mean, hey, it's something to do with your playgroup while your LGS is likely closed), and Alex has printed out the cube for his personal use. After all, that's what he designed the cube for to begin with! Any sorts of feedback and/or thoughts you have on the cube is greatly appreciated.

The first draft of the cube can be seen here: http://www.planesculptors.net/set/shards-of-ikoria#details

  • @Arceus8523 @Alextorrez6 Awesome!! I’ll look through it and post feedback here.
  • - THE COMMONS -

Are you using mechanics from many different sets? I think that’s probably fine, but I found it quite interesting. Also the way afterlife counters function is weird. Afterlife N just doesn’t feel right if you’re putting counters to make that n get larger. The function of afterlife counters is very confusing in general and makes many of the commons weird and confusing.

    Specific Cards:

    1. Spiritscreamer - The counters in Ikoria were really only made for evergreen abilities. Afterlife isn’t an evergreen ability and is only used in one set, also the way afterlife functions makes this card very confusing for a common.

    2. High Noon Commando - This seems quite efficient for one white mana. I think you could lower it’s p/t to 1/1.

    3. New Drannith Vigil - Again this seems quite good for a common. Maybe lowering it’s toughness to 3 would help.

    4. Radiating Boon - Looking at cards like Unbreakable Formation and Break of Day, I feel like this is a little pushed for common. I think making this an uncommon or make it sorcery speed would help.

    5. Cloudfin Raptor - Since this has flying, this could become a bit too powerful quite fast. I think that this should cost 2 mana instead of 1.

    6. Looting Otter - I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!! THIS IS GENIUS!

    7. Crippling Spark - This can become 4RG destroy two target creatures. That is a big break in the color pie to me.

    8. Invigorator - The repeatable untap effect is concerning. Maybe make this a 2/3 or 3/3?

    9. New Drannith Geosculptor - This might be better than you think. This card definitely needs to be playtested.

Just to be clear, this is a cube and not a made-for-[format] set. There is no real regard to rarity when designing these cards, and they were designed with the idea of interacting with one another in isolation, and not outside the cube.

    Also

  • @Arceus8523, I agreed with Shadow123. Afterlife counters are confusing, and don't make for fun gameplay.

@Arceus8523 I didn’t know about Cloudfin Raptor! I would have said the same thing as shadow123 if I didn’t know about that card. I like how this is turning out!
