Science-themed Set!!!!!!!!!!! --- Concepts

  • I think more science-related terms like Experiment or Hypothesize might make good mechanic names.
  • Ooh, experiment could be fun!

  • Experiment X - ( Pay (X): Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a card with mana value X. Reveal that card, then cast it without paying its mana cost.)
  • I was thinking experiment could be like combining spells, similar to splicing.
  • Possibly include a scientist creature subtype that you could use for some effects.
  • You could certainly use a "Scientist" creature type. But I think that Wizard, Artificer, and others work just as well.

Scientist is actually a creature type used in Unstable, on the 2 cards Teacher's Pet and Willing Test Subject.
  • white - social sciences
    blue - astrology/astronomy
    red - emotion/psychology
    black - pseudoscience involving reanimation
    green - evolution

possible scientific fields each color could be
  • dual colors would have completely separate fields of study, b/g - virology and w/g - medicine/healing

i'm basically thinking of each color and dual color identity almost being independent of each other.  red would want to attack hard, like usually while blue would want to prep their deck.  red and blue though could focus on trading permanents and messing with the board state by being "idea/research thieves" (IRL example would be the discoverers of DNA, who actually got the x-ray image from a woman and never gave her credit for the find)
  • 'Lright, here's the list of science archetypes and (and at the bottom responses):

    B/U: Psychology (Oneirology)
    Mill, graveyard exile, hand-related effects.

    G/W: Ecology (Zolology+Biology etc.)
Creature tokens, life gain, untapping creatures and lands, collective buff.

    R/U: Physics (Chemistry, Horology.)
Token copies, reflections, dividing (card draw, damage, etc.).

    W/U: Linguistics
Creature lock, putting cards on bottom/top of library.

    G/R: Geology
    Land-matters, land tutor, land animation.

There will also be some kind of side-off blue astrology thing based on scry and foresight.
    ------------------

I removed horology, I agree with @ningyounk.  Oneirology is now part of psychology. I also added linguistics.

@feralitator Depending on the science study field, the creature type will change. I think, as @KorandAngels said, it's more of an UN creature type.

@TheGamingBolasChannel Dual colours are probably better for design space.

@TerryTags Thanks! I'll definitely use that and try to keep my set unique and at the same time not breaking formula.

@LordTachanka123 I get what your saying, but I'm not sure why this would be better.

@AboveAndAbout I get what you mean about the mana rocks.

Maybe this isn't what you're thinking about, but is this kind of the idea?

@ChoyBoi (Also @LordTachanka123 for the first answer.)
     In the description:
"Just science may be boring, though. Soooo, when experiments start going wrong, and the scientists go a bit mad, some kind of group/cult/clan steps in to stop the trouble."

Yes, mentioned above are only five 2-colour themes, and one 1-colour theme.

I'm pencilling the story when we have stable lore and archetypes sorted out.

    AboveAndAbout + feratilator

About mechanics, I was thinking about Study as a name.
  • @TheDukeOfPork

At least to me, study sounds like it would have an effect similar to learn. Maybe Observation/Observe (As in observing the results of an experiment) sounds better?
  • Oh, yeah...

    Study isn't so much science....

    Examine or Observe, maybe?
  • experiment and present.  could work like learn, but can give a unique benefit.  Present spells would want X number of experiment cards in your graveyard for a better effect.  experiment could be composed on colorless spells
  • Might have misspelled it.  Basically, like showing off one's research/findings
  • could also work like the masterpiece mechanic in the rezatta custom set, but prevents opponents from casting the presented "work" , which would likely be an instant/sorcery or experiment spell.  This would last only as long as the creature or effect is on the board/stack
  • Gonna be honest, I'm just suggesting words that are part of the scientific method.

While experimenting, you perform multiple trials, sometimes with varying results. If experiment is used as a card type or mechanic, I personally think that there should be small modal/random effects to represent those varying results.
  • that could definetly work.  dice roll/ X coin flips and number of heads have to be met otherwise a less impressive effect activates
  • I just think that factions might be a little weird for a science based set, but totally your call.
  • i've been needing a setting to be the home of a planeswalker who wanted to make the whole multiverse his experimentation lab so I think I'll make a science themed set design alongside yours, when I finish the other sets in the story first that is, lol
  • I mean, considering it's a science based set, there's going to be some sort of separation between various disciplines.
  • true, but I also like challenging myself.  I am nearing completion of my 2 set block for Earth at the moment
  • @LordTachanka123 The factions aren't really working together. I think there'll be some rivalry between them, but on the whole they'll be considered as a research group.

Sorry I didn't have time for more, I had a circuit challenge to judge.
  • @TheDukeOfPork this actually is how science disciplines have worked in the past, basically not believing that something could be studied by more than one discipline.  I can't remember any specifics right now, but if you look it up I'm sure you can find some.
  • Has anyone got feedback about the archetypes?!!!!?

Designing the 2-colour archetypes was meant to be mixed in with the first job, and they need to be perfected for the whole of the rest of the set.

I'm not adding any more because the idea I was going to post requires some feedback.
  • I personally think that physics and chemistry aren't that closely related, and since there are multiple types of chemistry, I feel like chemistry could be part of its own color pair. (I guess it's fine to have physics and chemistry together if you are having only five color pairs, but I personally think that chemistry can fit its own color pair all on its own.)

You might want to create the set mechanics before fully settling on your archetypes. If you create your archetypes now but create really great mechanics, you might want to change some of your archetypes to focus on those mechanics later on. I think it's fine to do a bit of worldbuilding and distribute branches of science to your color combos now, but I think the safest bet is to wait on fully fleshing out your archetypes until you finish your mechanics.
  • @feralitator

The thing is, if we seperated physics and chemistry, then there wouldn't be a colour pair for chemistry. I'll probably just remove chemistry.

Good idea! I'll start building mechanic concepts right away!

As the son of a chemistry teacher, and a student who has taken a physics class this year, here's my comparison of physics and chemistry, and how I think they would probably be translated into magic:

    - Chemistry is a lot of thinking about the periodic table of elements, atomic molecules, chemical reactions, and kinda how things are made up at an atomic level. I could definitely see it being something combo-related, mixing and matching cards, and making chemical reactions to create the optimal result.

A lot of what I've learned in physics this year has to do with motion (Gravity, the force of an object, acceleration & velocity, etc.), and my class has also learned how electrical currents work. Note that I didn't get to learn about a lot of other things, so I'm just going off of what I've learned this year. I think physics would probably be an aggressive strategy, by gradually growing stronger until you have an unstoppable force. (I guess you could say that it would be, "getting the ball rolling"! ba-dum, tss.)

So from my understanding, chemistry is how things are made up, and physics is how things act. I personally think that chemistry might be a better fit for UR, but it's all up to you. It's also not like my idea for how chemistry and physics could be interpreted in magic are the only ways that they could be used in magic, that's just how I see them.
  • @feralitator ;

I thought physics was the study of matter.

    Here's the dictionary definition:
'the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. The subject matter of physics includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms'

I thought physics would be good in UR as token copies and dividing.
