The System is Online! - Creating Digital Cards
Hello!
Some of you might have heard about WotC's new online set Jumpstart: Historic Horizons for Arena. Some of you might have even seen the wacky digital-only cards that can only function online. I think they're pretty exciting, and by exciting I mean not knowing who in the room the coked-up Vizzerdrix will dismember next.
If you don't understand what's going on with these cards, worry not! In true spirit of WoTC's flawless communication efforts with their player base, they haven't even told us exactly what the mechanics do! But here's a rough explanation of some of the new mechanics:

Some of you might have heard about WotC's new online set Jumpstart: Historic Horizons for Arena. Some of you might have even seen the wacky digital-only cards that can only function online. I think they're pretty exciting, and by exciting I mean not knowing who in the room the coked-up Vizzerdrix will dismember next.
If you don't understand what's going on with these cards, worry not! In true spirit of WoTC's flawless communication efforts with their player base, they haven't even told us exactly what the mechanics do! But here's a rough explanation of some of the new mechanics:
- Seek: Powerful tutors grab a random card from your deck that matches specific criteria. No shuffling and no time spent looking at options—it just grabs a card that works out of your deck and the game keeps moving.
- Perpetually: Permanently change the characteristics of a card—no matter where it goes afterwards. Taking advantage of MTG Arena's ability to alter cards no matter where they go during gameplay, powerful benefits and unique changes add strategies found nowhere else in Magic.
- Conjure: Conjure creates cards out of thin air as a digital object that acts just like a normal card would. Powerful spells and artifacts can Conjure up iconic, powerful, or just plain useful cards—from Tropical Island and Stormfront Pegasus to Ponder and more.
Now: Can I offer you a challenge in these trying times? The rules are simple; I'll even write them down for you:
- For this challenge, you must create a card designed for online gameplay. You can use the three mechanics above, or come up with your own designs. The card cannot function normally by itself in regular tabletop play. Like, you can try to remember Subversive Acolyte turned into a Phyrexian or have extra copies of Ponder for Tome of the Infinite, but only on a digital platform would these functions be accessible to everyone (at least for now).
- Cards must follow all other supposedly expected design philosophies, like aesthetics, balance, the color pie, designing the cards for players and not the other way around, not confusing interesting with fun . . . geez, are any of these philosophies still alive?
- CREDIT THE ARTISTS. I will publicly shame you if you don't : )
- Conjuring nonlegendary copies of Oko, as always, is strictly prohibited.
- Here's the part where I can enforce my opinions on you: ALL ENTRIES MUST BE SILVER-BORDERED. I'm a cranky old fart, and I say we noble cardsmiths should never sacrifice decorum even when WoTC does.
- Deadline is August 20th or whenever I say so.
And now we are off to the races! Have fun y'all.
