It was also expanded to give you access to some of the Custom Card Sets that people have been working on.

Originally this thing started as a way to help showcase some of the Favored Members older cards. It was then expanded just a little to include some of the active members who those Cardsmiths felt deserved some recognition, and to include some of the older members who helped make this site so popular way back in the day.
So the question remains, How does one get into FiveThings?
The obvious way is to earn a spot on the Favored Members list. Gelectrode, for example, just made it onto the list. He has been very active and has been steadily improving his skill enough that other Cardsmiths are taking notice and favoriting his cards.
Another way is to have one or more of the established Cardsmiths nominate you for a spot. A Great example of this is Shinobi.

He doesn't get on much, but a couple of established members felt he needed to be recognized.
This is mainly how I determine who is getting a spot in FiveThings... obviously there will be exceptions and these aren't the only two ways to get in but they are the two main ways (also some card sets make their way in as well!)
