Manic Mechanics (Daily Mini-challenges: How will you respond?)

I've noticed something when going through my set of mechanics for my set. I have so many mechanics but very few cards that use them! How will you respond?

Rules:

- There is a challenge every day. Be sure to scroll down and go to the newest page so that you respond to the correct challenge!

- Try to avoid entering a previous mini-challenge.

- Limit 3 entries per mini-challenge.

- Your card must be (one of) the type(s) of card(s) stated in the mini challenge.

- No anonymous entries.

- By entering a mini-challenge you are contributing the entered card(s) to the Earthrealm collaborative set, if I choose to accept it/them. You will be given credit for your work, but I may modify your card slightly.

Today's mechanic is Pauper. Pauper is a mechanic for X cost spells that allows the spell to still have some sort of benefit, even if X is zero. Make any spell with Pauper.

Pauper - If X is zero, (insert effect here)

A good example: Scavenge the Dead. Cost: XXBB

Exile X creatures from your graveyard. You gain life equal to the combined toughness of all creatures exiled this way.

Pauper - If X is zero, instead exile one creature from your graveyard. You gain life equal to half its toughness, rounded down.

Challenge 1/7 for Sunday. Check back between 8 PM-12 EST for challenge two.

I finally have time to make a card for a challenge!

I figured that there should be a few card where having X at zero may be what you want, so yeah. And I needed to use that art.
  • Saw this challenge and thought of good 'ol Black Lotus for some reason. My card is an absolute hodgepodge of formatting, but I like the idea.

Good job guys! Get ready for the next challenge! One thing I forgot to tell you. The card doesn't have to have the mechanic, but rather, it has to have a way to gain the mechanic, or produce tokens with the mechanic, as you'll see in a moment. Also, you don't have to put the rules text on the card, if applicable.

    Monday's mechanic is assassinate!

Assassinate (Whenever this creature attacks, you may choose to have it attack a creature instead of a player or planeswalker. It's controller is still defending.) Mini Ruling: If the attacker is not blocked, the blocking and attacking creatures deal damage to one another as if they were fighting.

    My entry!

Challenge 2/7 for Monday. Check back between 8 PM-12 EST Monday Night for challenge three.

@JBYT_LoadedTommy First off, that's not attacking, so I will right now mint a new Keyword Action for it: Challenge. You may have it challenge a creature instead of attack a player. So it would not be a triggered ability, but a static replacement.

This illustrates nicely what I meant. If this isn't what YOU meant to happen, then I'll modify it.

EDIT: It does illustrate what I meant, but the wording is inaccurate in that the creature is still attacking. One small change needs to be made to my rewording. It should simply be, as Icecreammac said, instead of attacking another creature (still impossible), it fights that creature when combat damage would be dealt if it isn't blocked. Blegh. So challenge is a bomb, but the wording still needs to change.

    That's mostly what I meant, @CrucibleOfHate

    Explanation for assassinate:

    - When a creature with assassinate attacks a player, you may choose a creature that player controls.

    - This is considered targeting, so a creature with hexproof or protection cannot be assassinated.

    - If the assassinating creature is not blocked, the creature being assassinated is treated as if it is blocking the attacking creature.

    - If the assassinating creature is blocked, it is treated normally.

    - If the assassinating creature would trample over the blocking creature(s), the trample damage is dealt to the creature it was assassinating. The assassination target does not deal damage to the assassinating creature.

    - If an assassinating creature with trample would deal enough damage to the creature it's assassinating to destroy it, it tramples over that creature, dealing the rest to the defending player. This also applies if it was blocked before dealing damage to the creature it is assassinating.

    - If multiple creatures with assassinate are targeting the same creature, the attacking player chooses the attacking order after blockers are assigned.

Ignore the mini ruling I made Yesterday.

Good job guys! Get ready for the next challenge!

I have 3 mechanics for Tuesday! Here they are! You can use one or you can use all of them. Feel free to choose!

Overwhelming (Blocking this creature causes the creatures blocking it to tap.)

Last Strike (This creature deals combat damage after normal combat damage.)

Crushing (If a creature without flying would block this creature, destroy it.)

    Here's a creature with all 3!

Challenge 3/7 for Tuesday. Check back between 8 PM-12 EST Tuesday Night for challenge four.
  • Maro himself this about last strike yesterday

'Magic has a very robust set of rules, but it has limits. For example, in Future Sight, we tried to make a futureshifted card with "last strike." The idea was very simple. Just as first strike happens before normal combat damage, last strike would happen after normal damage. We had no problem playing with it. It's logically consistent, and we always knew what happened when it came up in gameplay, but the rules manager at the time (Mark Gottlieb) explained that adding last strike to the game would require a complete overhaul of how combat works. The system was built around normal damage and first strike. Adding in new layers requires pulling out the existing system and extensively reworking it. Gottlieb felt that the work required to make the change and the impact of the change on the rest of the game wasn't worth it for the new mechanic, so it was abandoned.'
  • @elf_of_greece Good thing these aren't real cards! XD
  • Then he's really gonna hate my new keyword... Double last strike!
  • Here is my creature. Using the Crushing mechanic

  • Thanks a lot for discouraging the use of last strike guys. Thanks a lot.
  • As punishment, I sentence all of you to one second of reading this message...

    Okay. Thank you.
  • Good job guys! Get ready for the next challenge!

Unfortunately, since everyone seems to be making a game out of trying to find every way possible to make my mechanics "not work," here's something you can't disapprove of. Wednesday's mechanic is Mighty!

Mighty (If this spell would deal damage to or destroy an indestructible permanent, that permanent loses indestructible until end of turn.)

    My entry!

Challenge 4/7 for Wednesday. Check back between 8 PM-12 EST Wednesday Night for challenge five.
  • Gah! I missed so many days! Ah well, here's my submission for today. http://mtgcardsmith.com/view/burning-guilt

Also, the assassinate mechanic; would it be easier to word it as whenever it attacks, you may instead have it fight target creature?
  • @TheCopyrightContinuum that would defeat the point. With assassinate, it can be blocked to prevent that. In fact, you can block with the assassination target if you have a combat trick and turn the tables.
  • Changed your mechanic again. (I deeply apologize)
