Ludicrous Life Totals

So up until last Sunday night, the most ridiculous life total I'd ever had in any Magic game was courtesy of my Oloro, Ageless Ascetic deck which held a proud record of 216 life (yay EDH-3-headed-giant.... that sounds good on paper. DON'T DO IT. it took 4 hours to finish the game. )

On Sunday however i smashed that record with a non-EDH deck, my own 62-card Green/White Lifegain/Angels deck. What was that total you ask? Oh, about 198000.

Yes you read that correctly. 198000. My opponent had an Avacyn, Angel of Hope on the battlefield preventing damage to his creatures when I swung at them, but he also had absolutely no destroy-enchantment cards or destroy-creature cards in his deck (And his deck was mostly small flying creatures.)

I had a Serra Avatar with Celestial Mantle.

And a Wall of Essence.

... That's it.

He eventually ceded the game because a) HOLYFREAKINLIFETOTALBATMAN and b) he was about to mill out from drawing cards (he played every draw card in his deck trying desperately to get my stuff off the field.)

It was a scarily-unorthodox game for sure. But it had me wondering... what's YOUR biggest life total ever? Is it as frankly silly as mine?

  • I can't think of anything that crazy with life totals, but I do remember a game once where my opponent was generating massive amounts of creature tokens, but he would not attack until he had almost run out of cards. I had gotten him to about 4 life with no hope of winning, but he begged me to keep playing so he could see what his final creature token count would be, I know it was over 600, but it ended up not mattering, because near the end I pulled a Lure, and the turn before he was going to attack, I played it and walked right past them all, while they dogpiled one of my creatures.
  • LOL. Yeah the same kind of mentality prevailed during the game i described above; we knew it was a stalemate. I wasn't drawing anything to get rid of his Avacyn (turns out both of my Pillars of Light and Condemn cards were at the bottom of my deck >.> ) and he just couldn't get past my ludicrous Serra (who was later joined by Angelic Skirmisher and Concerted Effort, rendering his flight advantage null.)

Haha oloro can be very annoying :)
I once played my oloro deck vs a freind, who played my rhys token deck...I had around 20 life, a serra avatar, the khans sorin and something that my opponent couldn't attack very well...and so the game went on an on to about 500 life (lifelink + serra avatar), but I almost lost to mill (yeah altar of the brood in a rhys deck can be very good :D)

Luckily won with my last cards before i got milled down (archfiend of depravity + blood artist) :)

But 198000...no not even close :D Although I had infinite life gain once, but we didn't play it out and everyone just gave up
  • Someone once attacked me with 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Goblins (he had to make a limit). Me? I played Riot Control.

My next turn, I played Drown in Sorrow. Because I had Blood Artist out, he lost that much life and I gained that much life.
    My grand life total:
    2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,029

    and 29
    LoL
  • 500 life. Then I played felidar sovereign. LOL
(I had 4 ajani mentor of heros in my deck.)
  • that is so funny, oh and by the way, did you know that you can get infinite +1/+1 counters by playing two hardened scales and any one card that grants +1/+1 counters? (not sure if this is legit, but awesome just the same. take both Hardened Scales, place them down, then plop the counter on any one creature. watch the infinite.
  • I was witness to the most boring game of commander:
Player 1 was playing Oloro and had out Glacial Chasm (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=288996), Venser's Journal (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=venser's journal), and Rule of Law (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=48112).
Player 2 was playing Karn, and had Knowledge Pool (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=214035), Tomb of the Spirit Dragon (http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?name=Tomb+of+the+Spirit+Dragon).

No one could play spells and have it resolve. PLayer 2 ended up winning because he had out the artifact that creates 1/1 Myrs, so player 1 had to keep paying the 2 life for cumulative upkeep. It took a lot of time before Player 1 even started losing life because he had so many cards in hand.
  • Not very large life total, but it was a fun game. This was when me and my friends were just starting out, I had a G/B Delirium deck and my friend a heavily modified Origins Elf intro pack. He had Nissa Revane out, and got up to 92 life with her +1. Nissa's -7 (I think) is to search your library for literally every single elf you own and put them all onto the battlefield. Nissa was on 7 loyalty, and it was my turn. Delirium was on, and I had a Soul Swallower out. This is one of my favourite cards, and I just kept swinging. It got harder and harder for him to prevent damage to Nissa, and she died just before she ultimated. That game never finished (CURSE YOU GODS OF THE RECESS BELL!)
  • I was playing commander with my brother and two guys from my LGS. I was playing a Brion Stoutarm deck, while someone else was playing an Oloro deck.

I played a Hamletback Goliath. Soon, it was a bout a 20/20. Then, I played Malignus, and it became a 45/45. Then, I played Serra Avatar, and it became a 97/97 (I had gained some life earlier ion the game).

I flung it + the Serra avatar, killing an opponent, the Oloro guy, leaving my brother on two life playing Roon of the Hidden Realm and his friend playing Scion of the Ur dragon. Then, I was on around 200 or so life. He player a Razia's Purification, and kept his dragons, while me and my brother kept lands.

Both of us kept on top decking expensive spells, until, finally, he managed to kill us both. :(
  • I hit infinite so often that I don't really think about it anymore...

    #InfiniteManaStaffofDomination
  • Back when things could be infinite rather than "unbounded" or "arbitrarily large," I had infinite life many times in tournaments. Nomads en-Kor or Warrior en-Kor with Task Force, then either Fling for infinite damage or Worthy Cause for infinite life. It was an extremely low-cost deck with low-mana cards so was popular. And many other combos like that for infinite whatevers.
  • @Xedanis , I have similar story to yours, but my opponent was the one with the absurd life total. I had a Platinum Emperion protected by a Leonin Abunas, and my opponent had an Ascended Lawmage enchanted with Celestial Mantle. Although we were both in white, neither of us had considered running any removal to get around hexproof, so we couldn't remove each others' threats. I sat there getting smacked in the face while my opponent kept doubling, but my life total never changed thanks to the Emperion. Eventually, he decked himself and I won, with 16 life to his well over four quadrillion.
  • Once I attacked for over 4000 damage with an army of plant tokens. Life? Who needs life when you can attack?
  • @Faiths_Guide
Same here, I'm just used to getting infinite life (But I still have to choose a number) but then I lose by commander damage or infect or something. In EDH, anything can happen.
  • My opponent was playing with the Jeskai Infinite Thopters deck, and started the combo, resulting in, well, infinite thopters. I played fumigate.
  • INFINITE LIFE!!!
